Chapter 30 - The Werewolf's POV

Jennifer clicked on the new release of her werewolf series. Yes, the abandoned one that came to life and started posting on its own yesterday. Today's update:

THE CURSE OF DARKFALL

CHAPTER 12

DAMIEN'S POV

We were being followed.

I knew coming to orientation was a bad idea.

I had skipped the entire freshman week to avoid crossing paths with the Rogue King's assassins. What was the point of leaving my pack and hiding here if I was just going to parade myself in the open?

But now—

I glanced at the golden-haired prince walking beside me.

"What is it?" he asked.

Even at night, the sound of his voice was like sunlight slipping through summer leaves. Irritating.

I had spent the entire day with this useless prince.

Not by choice.

But the landlady had requested it, and my wolf refused to let me say no.

So we toured club booths.

Ate at the cafeteria.

Sat through an entire briefing on course registration because Angus discovered I hadn't collected my matriculation documents or signed up for a single class.

He made an unnecessary fuss about it. A ridiculous thing to worry about.

In the end, I told him to register me for whatever he was taking just to make him shut up.

"Yes, that would be for the best," he said, raising one elegant brow. "My schedule was arranged in consultation with Sebastian and several deans."

Of course it was.

I shrugged. It was irrelevant.

I was a lone wolf on the run. I didn't have time for online administration.

Later, when a group of girls invited us out for drinks at a nearby bar, the golden prince accepted on our behalf.

"Very well."

The girls nearly swooned.

"Why did you agree?" I growled once we were out of earshot. The night air carried too many scents. Too many shadows. The bar was only a block from campus, but that didn't make it safe.

"We promised the landlady to accept social invitations," he reminded me calmly. "And a gentleman keeps his word."

"I'm not a gentleman. I'm a wolf."

He stopped walking and narrowed his eyes at me.

"No. You are an insufferable idiot."

I bared my teeth.

I had been called insufferable before.

Insufferable alpha.

Not idiot.

"You're the idiot," I shot back.

"No. You."

"No. You."

For one reckless second, I considered shifting just enough to let my claws tear across his infuriatingly perfect face.

I didn't.

The landlady had ordered us to return in one piece.

Reluctantly.

We were a block from the bar now.

"Just one drink," I said. The streetlights cast a halo around his golden hair. Annoying. "I'm not dragging a drunk prince home."

"Likewise," he replied coolly.

"I won't get drunk easily."

I stopped mid-step.

Killing intent.

Sharp. Focused. Directed at me.

From above.

Rooftops.

Damn rogues.

"Come," I muttered.

Before he could protest, I grabbed his wrist and pulled him toward the nearest building. We pushed through the stairwell door and took the stairs three at a time.

He glanced at the neon sign downstairs.

"Why are we in a KTV lounge?" he asked, visibly offended.

I gripped his shoulders.

"Stay here."

"Excuse—"

I was already moving.

I slipped into the nearest room, crossed it in two strides, and leapt out the open window into the alley below.

Then I released it.

My Alpha Domination.

Not enough to crush the block.

Just enough to make sure they felt me.

To make sure they followed.

My aura flared like a challenge into the night.

Come.

If you've tracked me this far…

Then come.

I'll make you regret being born.
