Chapter 23 - Chpt 22. Thunder of Kannabi

The Kannabi sector was a landscape of jagged shadows and vertical despair. Massive granite cliffs rose like the teeth of a subterranean beast, and the air was thick with the scent of ozone and pulverized minerals.

Renza and Renju moved through the high-altitude mists like ghosts of a future war. They were three miles from the Konoha forward base, but the ground was already vibrating with a rhythmic, bone-jarring thud that made the marrow in their bones ache.

"Do you hear that, Abyss?" Renza whispered. He was crouched on a needle-thin spire of rock, his Stone trench knives gripped so tightly his knuckles were white. "That's not the earth moving. That's the Earth-Shake Cannons."

Renju stood beside him, his eyes closed. He was utilizing Total Concentration: Constant to map the vibrations. "Four of them. Massive chakra signatures. They're using a team of sixteen Earth-style specialists for each cannon just to stabilize the recoil. If they fire another volley, the ridge holding the Konoha base will liquefy."

"And Minato?" Renza asked, his voice tightening.

"He's pinned at the base of the gorge," Renju replied, his brow furrowing. "His 'Yellow Sun' speed is useless when the very ground he's stepping on is turning into a seismic wave. He's trying to hold a defensive perimeter, but he's being buried alive."

Renza looked at his partner. They both knew what was required. They were the only ones fast enough to bypass the frontline infantry and reach the artillery before the next volley.

"Second Gate?" Renza asked.

"Second Gate," Renju confirmed. "But remember... we don't just open them. We sync."

The Stone artillery was positioned on a plateau known as the Anvil. It was guarded by a specialized "Armored Company"—ninjas who wore heavy, chakra-conductive stone plates that made them immune to standard kunai and low-level jutsu.

From the cliffs above, two streaks of light descended. One was a jagged, teal-white flash of wind; the other was a deep, crimson-blue surge of water.

"Eight Inner Gates: Gate of Opening... RELEASE!" "Eight Inner Gates: Gate of Healing... RELEASE!"

The air in the gorge exploded. The sudden surge of atmospheric pressure from their release cleared the mist for a thousand yards.

Renza landed first. He didn't use a knife strike. He used the momentum of his fall and the power of the Second Gate to deliver a Wind-Infused Stomp. The shockwave shattered the stone armor of three guards instantly, the pressure turning their reinforced plates into shrapnel that tore through their own ranks.

"The Calamities!" a Stone officer roared, raising a massive iron shield. "Focus fire! Don't let them reach the cannons!"

A barrage of Earth Style: Stone Spear jutsu erupted from the ground, a forest of jagged spikes aiming to impale the boys.

"Calamity Resonance: Flowing Gale!"

This was the fruit of their training in the medical compound. Renza grabbed Renju's arm, spinning him with the centrifugal force of the Second Gate. As Renju spun, he released a massive volume of water from his scrolls, which Renza immediately caught and accelerated with his wind.

It became a High-Pressure Hydro-Cutter. The spinning blade of water and wind didn't just break the stone spears; it mowed them down like grass. The "Armored Company" was suddenly facing a horizontal tornado that possessed the cutting power of a diamond-tipped saw.

They reached the first Earth-Shake Cannon. It was a monstrosity of iron and chakra-seals, twenty feet long and ten feet wide. A team of Stone ninjas was desperately trying to load a massive, rune-carved boulder into the breach.

"Not today!" Renza roared.

He used Wind Step to launch himself onto the barrel of the cannon. He ran along the iron tube, his feet glowing with teal chakra.

"Wind Breathing, First Form: Dust Whirlwind... SAVAGE GATES!"

He drove his trench knives into the firing mechanism. The wind chakra he poured into the device didn't just jam it; it acted as a pressurized wedge. When the Stone ninjas tried to trigger the firing seal, the internal pressure had nowhere to go.

K-BOOM.

The cannon exploded from the inside out. The iron barrel peeled back like a banana, and the resulting shockwave sent the Stone loading team flying into the abyss.

Meanwhile, Renju was a wall of cold, calculated violence at the base of the plateau. He was holding back twenty Stone ninjas simultaneously.

"Water Breathing, Third Form: Flowing Dance... DEEP PRESSURE!"

With the Second Gate open, Renju's movements were so fluid they were almost impossible to track. He moved like a ribbon through the heavy stone-plate armor of his enemies. He didn't try to cut the armor; he used his palm-strikes to send Hidden Ripples through the stone.

The vibration bypassed the physical protection and shattered the internal organs of the Stone ninjas. They fell one by one, their armor intact but their hearts stopped.

"Two more cannons!" Renju shouted, his voice echoing over the roar of battle. "Renza, the heat is rising! We're hit the three-minute mark!"

"ENOUGH!"

A massive hand reached out of the ground and grabbed Renju's ankle. A man erupted from the earth—Doton the Unmovable, a legendary Jonin of the Hidden Stone. He was a giant, his skin grey and textured like weathered granite.

Doton slammed a fist into Renju's chest.

Renju used the Second Gate: Healing to absorb the impact, his muscles expanding to cushion the blow, but the force was enough to send him skidding fifty feet across the plateau, his boots carving deep furrows in the rock.

"You children have caused enough trouble," Doton growled. He clapped his hands together. "Earth Style: Mountain Sandwich!"

Two massive slabs of rock, each the size of a house, rose on either side of Renju and slammed shut with a deafening crack.

"RENJU!" Renza screamed.

The white-haired boy went into a frenzy. He ignored the third cannon and dove toward the stone tomb. His white hair was glowing with a terrifying intensity, and blood began to leak from his pores—the sign of the Second Gate reaching its absolute limit.

"TOTAL CONCENTRATION: VOID BURST!"

Renza didn't slice the rocks. He punched them. He delivered a hundred wind-infused strikes in three seconds. The vibration of the wind hit the resonance frequency of the stone, and the "Mountain" shattered into pebbles.

Renju tumbled out, his skin bruised and his breathing ragged, but alive. He looked up at Doton, his dark blue eyes turning a shade of cold, killing ice.

"Renza," Renju rasped, coughing up a mouthful of dark blood. "The final sync. The Abyssal Storm."

"But your heart—" Renza started.

"Do it, Gale! Or we both die on this rock!"

hey stood back-to-back in the center of the plateau. Doton and the remaining forty Stone ninjas surrounded them.

The air began to scream. It wasn't the wind; it was the atmosphere itself being torn apart by the clashing chakras of the Second Gate.

"Eight Inner Gates Resonance: ABYSSAL STORM!"

Renza became the core of a massive vacuum, drawing all the air in the gorge toward them. Renju released every drop of water he had left, creating a sphere of liquid that Renza's wind instantly vaporized into a super-heated mist.

Then, they expanded.

It wasn't a jutsu. It was a Calamity.

A dome of white mist and silver wind exploded outward. To the Stone ninjas, it felt like being hit by a hurricane made of razor blades and boiling steam. The "Armored Company" was shredded. The remaining Earth-Shake Cannons were lifted off their mountings and tossed into the gorge like toys.

Doton the Unmovable tried to use Earth Style: Golem to protect himself, but the Abyssal Storm didn't just hit him—it eroded him. The wind stripped the stone from his body, and the pressure of the water-vapor crushed his lungs.

The storm lasted only five seconds. When it cleared, the plateau of the Anvil was as smooth as a polished mirror. Every Stone ninja, every cannon, and every rock had been swept away.

The Second Gate ended with the finality of a guillotine.

Renza and Renju fell in opposite directions. Renza hit the ground and didn't move, his body smoking from the friction of the wind. Renju was curled in a fetal position, his heart beating with a stuttering, irregular rhythm that sounded like a broken drum.

The silence was absolute.

From the base of the gorge, a yellow light flickered. Minato Namikaze appeared on the ridge, his face pale with shock. He had seen the explosion of the Abyssal Storm from below. He had felt the pressure change in his very marrow.

He ran to them, his hands glowing with a frantic, amateurish green light.

"Renza! Renju!"

He reached Renza first. The white-haired boy's skin was ice-cold, yet he was sweating profusely. Minato turned him over and gasped. The skin on Renza's arms had been partially stripped away by the force of his own wind.

"Hold on," Minato whispered, his voice cracking. "Please, just hold on. The medics are coming. Lord Jiraiya is coming."

Renju crawled toward them, his fingers dragging through the dust. He reached out and grabbed Renza's hand.

"We... we did it," Renju whispered, his eyes unfocused. "The bridge... is safe."

"You idiots," Minato said, tears finally breaking through his tactical mask. "You absolute, brilliant idiots. You weren't supposed to take the whole mountain."

Two weeks later, the "Twin Calamities" were back in Konoha. But this time, they weren't in the standard medical wing. They were in Tsunade's private laboratory.

The Sannin stood over them, her face grimmer than they had ever seen it. Jiraiya stood in the corner, his head bowed.

"You used the Second Gate to achieve Resonance," Tsunade said, her voice a low, dangerous vibration. "Do you have any idea what that did to your nervous systems? You've fused a portion of your chakra coils. If you ever use that move again without a three-month recovery period, you won't just die—you'll dissolve."

"But the bridge is safe," Renza rasped from his bed, his arms still wrapped in heavy, medicated bandages.

"The bridge is a pile of wood!" Tsunade roared, slamming her fist into the wall. "You two are the only things in this war that matter to me right now! You're fourteen! You're supposed to be learning about girls and eating ramen, not turning yourselves into atmospheric bombs!"

She sighed, her anger fading into a deep, clinical exhaustion.

"The Hokage has given you a commendation. You're being promoted to Special Jonin. But it comes with a condition."

Renju looked up, his dark blue eyes still reflecting the trauma of the storm. "What condition?"

"You are no longer allowed to be deployed as frontline infantry," Jiraiya spoke up from the corner. "You are now the Leaf's Tactical Deterrent. You only go in when the Sannin or the Yellow Sun can't handle the heat. You are the ghosts of the Kannabi, boys. And ghosts don't get to live in the light."

Renza looked at Renju. They saw the truth in each other's eyes. They were the legends of the war, but the legends were built on a foundation of broken bones and scorched lungs.

"Special Jonin," Renza muttered, a weak grin touching his lips. "I hope it comes with a pay raise. I want to buy a decent meal before the Third Gate kills me."
