Chapter 64 - Chpt 62: Bridge of Shattered Glass

The spring thaw did not bring life to the Land of Grass; it brought the scent of wet earth and the iron tang of blood. The Stone and Cloud had formed a desperate, jagged alliance, attempting to pincer the Land of Fire by seizing the vital supply routes running through the Grass.

The Leaf's response was fractured. Minato Namikaze was deployed to the front lines to lead the main defensive battalion, acting as the "Shield of the Will." Meanwhile, the Council, recognizing the need for surgical destruction, had signed a secondary contract with the Sovereign Estate.

Inside the Hatake Estate, the air was pressurized. Renju stood before Kakashi, who was now eight years old and carried the physical density of a veteran.

"The Kannabi Bridge and its sister spans are the lifeblood of the Stone's logistics," Renju said, his voice a low vibration. "Minato will draw their main force. You will go alone. Your task is not to engage, but to dissolve. Use the Voltage Gate to weaken the structural integrity of the bridge supports. Let the weight of their own supplies finish the job."

Kakashi nodded, his expression hollow. "And the casualties, Sensei?"

"There are no casualties, Kakashi. There are only obstacles," Renju replied. "I will be overseeing the diversion at the border. You are the invisible hand."

Kakashi checked his tanto, the silver blade reflecting the cold spring light. He didn't notice the small, silent shadow perched on the rafters of the training hall.

Shisui moved like a leaf caught in a draft. He hadn't been invited, and he certainly hadn't been seen. Following Renju's advice, he had spent the winter perfecting his Abyssal Fluidity—learning to move not by pushing off the ground, but by letting the air carry him.

As Kakashi flickered out of the Estate and toward the Grass border, Shisui followed. He stayed exactly three hundred yards behind, masked by the natural white noise of the forest. He wanted to see it—the Hammer in action. He wanted to know if the price Kakashi was paying was worth the power it granted.

The Grass border was a nightmare of mud and fog. Kakashi moved through the Stone's perimeter patrols like a ghost made of static. He didn't use the Body Flicker; he used the First Gate to polarize his body, sliding through the high grass without displacing a single blade.

Shisui, watching from a ridge, was mesmerized. He saw the mechanical perfection of Kakashi's movements. There was no wasted energy, no hesitation.

"He's not even breathing," Shisui whispered to himself, his own lungs burning from the effort of maintaining his stealth.

Kakashi reached the first bridge—a massive stone structure spanning a deep gorge. He didn't plant explosive tags. Instead, he climbed down to the primary support pillar and pressed his palms against the cold rock.

"Voltage Gate: Molecular Friction."

High-frequency lightning, invisible to the naked eye, began to vibrate through the stone. It wasn't an explosion; it was an erosion. Within seconds, the internal structure of the pillar turned to dust, held together only by the outer shell of the rock. It was a death trap waiting for the weight of a single wagon.

As Kakashi moved toward the second bridge, he was intercepted. Not by a battalion, but by a specialized Stone Scout—a man who utilized Earth-Pulse Detection.

"Got you, Leaf rat!" the scout roared, slamming his palms into the ground. "Earth Style: Rising Spikes!"

Kakashi didn't jump. He engaged the Second Gate. The air around him distorted as the Abyssal Pressure flared. The stone spikes didn't miss; they shattered against the invisible wall of force surrounding the eight-year-old.

Kakashi appeared in front of the scout. He didn't use a jutsu. He simply touched the man's chest.

"Cardiac Overload."

A precise, high-voltage spark bypassed the man's armor and stopped his heart instantly. The scout fell without a sound.

From the shadows, Shisui felt a cold shiver. The efficiency was beautiful, but it was terrifying. Kakashi didn't look at the man he had just killed. He didn't check for a pulse. He simply turned back toward the bridge.

"He's losing his humanity," Shisui realized. "The Hammer doesn't feel the hit."

Suddenly, Kakashi stopped. He turned his head slightly toward the ridge where Shisui was hidden. The air between them hummed.

"I know you're there, Flicker," Kakashi said, his voice carrying through the fog despite the distance. "Renju-sensei said you were fast, but your chakra smells like Uchiha incense. It's a distraction."

Shisui stood up, realizing the ruse was over. He didn't look ashamed; he looked curious. "You killed him without a thought, Kakashi. Is that what the Master teaches? That the world is just a list of targets?"

Kakashi looked at the five-year-old. For a brief second, the blue light in his eyes flickered, revealing the tired boy underneath. "The world is a war zone, Shisui. If you spend time thinking about the target, the target starts thinking about you. Go back to your 'Will of Fire.' Leave the heavy lifting to the Estate."

"I'm not here for the Will," Shisui said, stepping down the ridge with a fluid grace that made Kakashi's eyes narrow. "I'm here because the Hammer needs a handle. If you keep swinging like this, you're going to break yourself."

Before Kakashi could respond, a signal flare from the main front lit up the sky—Yellow. Minato Namikaze had engaged the Stone's main force. The "Shield" was in place. It was time for the "Hammer" to finish the job.

"Stay out of my way," Kakashi commanded, flickering toward the final bridge.

Shisui didn't stay back. He moved with him, the two prodigies of a broken generation racing through the fog—one a bolt of lightning, the other a whisper in the wind.
