Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Council of Sovereigns

The Hall of Judgment was not a room; it was a floating island suspended above the Five Peaks, held aloft by ancient gravitational arrays that hummed with a frequency that made the teeth of ordinary mortals ache. To reach it, the "Integrated Squad" had to be transported via a Jade-Cloud Carriage, a luxury usually reserved for the most elite elders.

As the carriage ascended, Lin Qingyu leaned against the plush velvet seat, looking thoroughly bored. beside him, Shen Yuanxing was sweating, his hand white-knuckled on his sword hilt. Mu Ruxin was reciting grounding mantras under her breath, and even Xue Lianhua looked unusually rigid.

"Relax," Lin murmured, his eyes half-closed. "They just want to hear a story. If they wanted to kill us, they wouldn't have sent a carriage with silk pillows."

"You don't understand, Lin," Mu Ruxin whispered. "The Grand Elder hasn't appeared in public for fifty years. To be summoned like this... it's like being asked to explain your existence to the Heavens themselves."

Lin let out a soft hum. In his past life, he had spent fourteen hours a day staring at spreadsheets, answering to middle managers who thought a three-minute bathroom break was a "performance issue." He had died at his desk with a cold cup of coffee and an unfiled report. Compared to a quarterly earnings review under a toxic CEO, a group of high-level cultivators was almost... refreshing.

The carriage docked at the Jade Plaza. As the doors opened, the squad was met by a pressure so immense it felt like walking into deep water.

The Sovereigns of Azure Cloud

At the end of the long, translucent hall sat eight figures.

In the center was Sect Leader Yun Tiangang, a man who looked to be in his forties but whose eyes held the cold, detached wisdom of a millennium. Beside him sat the Grand Elder, Mu Feng, a withered figure whose Qi was so restrained he looked like a dead tree, yet the space around him seemed to warp and fold in reverence. Both were half-step Mahayana—the closest a mortal could get to the divine.

Flanking them were the Six Peak Masters, each a Void Refinement powerhouse:

Peak Master Vulcan (Iron Blood Hall): The man from the trials, a wall of living flame.

Peak Master Bing He (Frozen Lotus Peak): Xue Lianhua's master. She was a woman of absolute frost, her presence causing the very air in the hall to crystallize into snow.

Peak Master Yao (Alchemy Peak): An elderly man smelling of herbs and ancient dust, his eyes glowing with a faint green light.

Peak Master Jian (Sword Peak): A man who didn't sit so much as hover, his entire body vibrating like a honed blade.

Peak Master Ling (Array Peak): A woman surrounded by floating geometric runes that calculated the fate of everyone in the room.

Peak Master Ku (Shadow Peak): A figure so obscured by darkness that only his glowing violet eyes were visible.

"Kneel," the herald commanded.

Shen, Mu, and Xue dropped instantly. Lin Qingyu followed a second later, his movement slow and "heavy," making sure to look like a Level 4 disciple who was being physically crushed by the pressure.

"Rise," Sect Leader Yun Tiangang spoke. His voice didn't travel through the air; it vibrated directly in their souls. "The Southern Weald has been a thorn in our side for decades. You four went in as a trial squad and returned having dismantled a High-Level Corrupted Node. Tell us... how?"

Shen Yuanxing took the lead, describing the fight with the husks and the Rot-Stalker. He spoke with passion, but when he reached the part about the ritual's collapse, he hesitated. "It was... a series of environmental collapses. The Fire-Spore beetles ignited a chain reaction, and the Great Blight-Oak fell upon the pillars."

The Grand Elder, Mu Feng, opened one eye. The gaze was like a physical probe, scanning Shen's soul. "A chain reaction? In an array maintained by the Evil Sect's High-Priests? That is a very... convenient sequence of events."

The Sect Leader turned his gaze toward the back of the group. "Disciple Lin Qingyu."

Lin felt the weight of eight Tier-1 powerhouses settle on his shoulders. This was the moment where most people would tremble or reveal their hidden cultivation in a burst of defensive instinct. Lin did neither. He simply looked up, his expression one of mild, weary confusion.

"Yes, Sect Leader?"

"The reports from Instructor Gane and Peak Master Bing He's disciple suggest you have a 'knack' for being in the right place at the wrong time," Yun Tiangang said. "You threw a rock at a beetle nest. You tripped into a gravity well. You kicked a ritual pillar because you were 'scared.' Do you realize how statistically impossible your survival is?"

"The Heavens are very kind to fools, Sect Leader," Lin said, his voice steady but lacking any edge of challenge. "I didn't think about it. I just wanted to go home and eat. When you're as weak as I am, you don't 'strategize.' You just react."

Peak Master Bing He, the woman of frost, leaned forward. Her eyes were like needles. "React? To shift an obsidian pillar by half a degree requires a specific resonance. My disciple, Xue Lianhua, believes there is a 'Stability' in you that defies your rank."

Lin sighed internally. Here we go. The promotion trap.

"Senior Sister is too kind," Lin said. "I'm just an 'All-Rounder.' I practiced every basic technique because I was too lazy to specialize. It turns out that when you know a little bit of everything, you can find a lot of ways to fall down safely. I don't want power, Peak Master. I just want a quiet life in the Outer Peak where I don't have to carry heavy rocks anymore."

The Grand Elder Mu Feng let out a dry, rattling laugh. "A quiet life? In the middle of a war? You have the foundation of a 'Neutral Anchor,' boy. Your Qi is so balanced it's almost invisible. That is a rare trait for an infiltrator... or a scout."

"I'm a very bad scout," Lin argued quickly. "I have no sense of direction, and I fall asleep if I sit still for too long. Truly, I'm best suited for... perhaps the Library? Or a small garden?"

The Sect Leader narrowed his eyes. He performed a Divine Sense Probe. It wasn't a violent attack, but a subtle "wash" of spiritual energy meant to reveal any hidden layers of cultivation.

Lin felt the probe enter his sea of consciousness. To the Sect Leader, Lin's soul looked like a vast, muddy lake—deep, yes, but filled with the "silt" of ordinary thoughts: recipes for spicy noodles, the feeling of a warm bath, and a very strong desire to take a nap. The Internal Soul-Lock he had acquired worked perfectly; the deeper secrets of his past life and his true understanding of the world remained buried beneath leagues of mundane, "boring" mental static.

The Sect Leader withdrew his sense, looking slightly disappointed. "He is indeed a Level 4. His foundation is wider than most, which explains his durability, but there are no hidden realms. He is simply... remarkably consistent."

"A 'Balanced Waste,'" Peak Master Vulcan grunted. "Useful for chores, but a liability in a real battle."

"And yet," the Grand Elder whispered, "he survived. And the Hero survived because of him."

The Sect Leader stood up, the movement causing the floating island to tremble. "We will not punish success, however strange its path. Shen Yuanxing, Xue Lianhua, Mu Ruxin—you are promoted to the 'Vanguard Strike Team.' You will receive the highest resources of the sect."

He then looked at Lin. "As for you, Lin Qingyu. Since you desire a 'quiet life,' I will grant it. But as a 'reward' for your luck, you are hereby appointed as the Tactical Observer for the Vanguard Team. You will accompany them on all missions. You are not required to fight, but you are required to... 'stumble' in the right direction."

Lin's heart sank. Tactical Observer? That's just a fancy word for 'Consultant.' Consultants have to go to meetings. Consultants have to travel. This is the opposite of a nap!

"Sect Leader," Lin said, desperate now. "I'm really quite clumsy. I might accidentally 'stumble' the team off a cliff."

"Then I suggest you learn to walk straight," Peak Master Bing He said with a ghost of a smile. "Dismissed."

As the squad walked back across the Jade Plaza, Shen Yuanxing clapped Lin on the back, nearly knocking him over. "Tactical Observer! Lin, the Sect Leader actually acknowledged your luck! We're staying together!"

"It's a disaster," Lin groaned, rubbing his shoulder. "I'm a hero now. Heroes have to do things. Heroes have to save the world. I just wanted to be the guy who waters the plants."

Xue Lianhua walked beside him, her icy aura much softer now. "The Sect Leader didn't find what he was looking for in your soul, did he?"

"He found exactly what was there, Senior Sister," Lin lied smoothly. "A very strong desire for a nap."

Xue looked at the horizon, where the Five Peaks stood like giants. "The Peak Masters are satisfied for now. But the Grand Elder... he's still watching you. He doesn't believe in 'Lucky Snails.' He believes in hidden dragons."

"Then he's going to be very bored," Lin said, looking at his new "Observer" jade slip. "Because this dragon is going into hibernation the moment we get back to the dorms."

[Emotional Stability System]

Interrogation Result: Success (Identity Shielded).

New Rank: Tactical Observer (Unique Role).

Sect Status: Officially recognized as 'The Lucky Snail of Azure Cloud.'

System Note: You managed to convince a half-step Mahayana master that you are a 'Balanced Waste.' That is a Level 100 deception feat.

Reward: Cloak of the Mundane (Active). Effect: When active, your 'Observer' status makes people less likely to assign you difficult tasks.

Next Arc: The 'Grand Sect Tournament.' As an 'Observer,' you don't have to fight, but you do have to sit in the VIP booth and watch everyone else get beaten up.

Lin reached his hut and threw the jade slip onto the table. He collapsed onto his bed, his eyes closing before his head even hit the pillow.

The Peak Masters were strong. The Sect Leader was terrifying. The Grand Elder was a living fossil. But none of them had realized the most important thing about Lin Qingyu.

He wasn't a dragon. He wasn't a waste.

He was just a man who had worked too many overtime shifts in his first life, and he was damned if he was going to start doing it again in this one.

"Tactical Observer..." Lin muttered into his pillow. "I'll observe. I'll observe so hard from the back row that I'll be practically invisible."

Outside, the bells of the Five Peaks rang out, announcing the new heroes. But inside the small, dusty hut of the Outer Peak, the "Hero" was already fast asleep.
