Chapter 14 - shopping and preparation

The ruins thinned as Noel walked.

Broken concrete gave way to roads. Roads turned to districts. Districts shifted into the layered structure of the City steel towers, mana-lit signage, aerial rails threading through the skyline.

Civilization.Order.Hierarchy.

Noel adjusted the cloth wrapped around the artifact beneath his coat.

The object felt warm today.

Responsive.

But hidden.

Always hidden.

He stepped through the security gate at the district boundary.

A crystal panel scanned his identity tag automatically.

A thin projection flickered.

Citizen: Noel Arvind

Rank: Unranked

Evaluation: Low Priority

The guard barely looked at him.

"Move."

No hostility.

Just disinterest.

Sigh. Even if I am prepared this still stings man . Noel murmured

At the city center .

Crowds filled the streets.

Hunters in armor. Students in uniforms.

Merchants negotiating prices loudly. Mana constructs gliding overhead delivering goods.

Noel blended into it.Invisible.

Until he passed a group near a guild recruitment board.

A bronze-ranked boy glanced at Noel's projected tag.

"Unranked?" he snorted.

Another laughed.

"What are you doing here? Delivering parcels?"

"Careful," a third added mockingly.

"He might collapse if too much pressure rises."

"Noel seeing them felt that .

They weren't even cruel.Just amused of their so called superiority.

Noel didn't react. And started walking

Because they were right — by the System's definition.

He was nothing.

"And he don't need to give a explanation to anyone either

So he kept walking.

Let them laugh.

Every hierarchy was measured worth differently.

And right now he was at the bottom of it .

Noel steps slowly made him reached the place he wanted to be .

Market District Here the Noise thickened.Lanterns of contained mana floated above stalls.

Vendors shouted across narrow lanes.

Weapons.Relics.Scrolls.Information tablets.Exploration gear.

All the things was present here that he needed and was in good quality

This was why he came.

Preparation.

He travelled the market and saw many things being sold.

"Come to our humble workshop .we have everything you would need be it sword, a spear or even maps of some places . A shopkeeper was shouting and promoting his shop .

Same was for others shopkeepers too

Noel just took a glance on them and then turned away as they were just talk . Their products were just made of some cheap materials.

"Will I even get a shop that can give me all the things I need? Noel said to himself as after all this time he haven't find a shop .

Then just as luck smiled at him he saw an old rusty shop at the alleyway. It had a strange design of blue flowers carvings made on it and a large penguin made on them .

"What a strange design does the shopkeeper choice of aesthetic is a little too different or he is just nuts ..well who cares let's see if he has the things that i would need

He walked at the navigation stall filled with rolled parchments and holographic overlays.

An elderly was present there he was in his own world as he didn't even bat an eye when Noel came

"Cough "cough "

"Noel coughed while making a sound .

The shopkeeper looked up at Noel his eyes went over all Noel body and he then asked .

"Looking for dungeon charts?"

"No," Noel replied calmly.

"World geography."

The shopkeeper blinked once.

Then rummaged beneath the counter.

"Not many people show interest in them.

so it could be hard to find as youngsters nowadays just want to know the safe zones .

"Even the hunters don't show particular interest in them so it could be hard to find but let me check a bit .

"The shopkeeper said and started rummaging through his shop .

This isn't it .

Ooh? No this too isn't it .

"Oh this one could work .

The shopkeeper looked at the scrolls and just threw them .

Noel eye twitched seeing this .

"Does this man have a shred of knowing the price of his scrolls that he is just casually throwing them?

At long last I found it . The shopkeeper exclaimed loudly

He produced a sealed roll. With dust forming in it and looking quite old .

"Updated continental mapping. Includes mana-shift coastlines, restricted regions, and dead zones."

"Noel accepted it.Unrolled slightly.

His eyes sharpened.

The world expanded before him

Massive landmasses were divided by unstable oceans.

Uncharted territories marked only with warning sigils.

Floating anomaly zones.

Ancient sealed continents.

Dimensional scars.

Trade routes threading between them.

And beyond—

Blankness.

Not labeled.

Not explored.

Just space for possibility.

"How much?" Noel asked.

The shopkeeper named a price.

"Well it's old but it contains a very accurate amount of information so give me 5 credits .

"The price was reasonable but high for someone unranked.

Reasonable for knowledge.

Noel paid without hesitation.

"Hah with this my last money too is gone .

The man studied him curiously.

"Planning to travel far?"

Noel rolled the map carefully.

"Yes."

That was all.

The merchant nodded.

"Then learn this early."

He tapped the map.

"The world is larger than rankings."

Noel met his gaze briefly for a short moment and then muttered .

"I know."

 And then he left .

"Noel then went into the other shops to find the other things he needed

"He bought only essentials.Simple satchel Portable rations Ink Blank journal. Nothing flashy Nothing traceable.

"Preparation over appearance. Was what Noel thought works better

"As Noel exited the market, he spotted the earlier group of bronze-ranked youths passing again.

One smirked.

"Still alive, Unranked?"

Noel paused.Looked at him and said with a small smile .

"Yes."

Then continued walking.

The response landed strangely. And worked as they didn't followed again .

"In the rooftop

Noel sat alone overlooking the city.

He unrolled the world map fully.

Wind pressed against the parchment.

His fingers traced coastlines.

Unknown regions.

Unreachable zones.

Places no scholar from this era understood anymore.

He remembered the old books.Newton.Einstein.Quantum theory And many discoveries

A civilization that questioned everything.

Before mana simplified answers.

Before curiosity dulled.

His eyes moved toward the blank regions.

"…Beyond this planet." Lies something too.

He folded the map again.

Carefully.

Deliberately.

The artifact ticked softly beneath his coat.

"Somewhere above—Observers watched.Sponsors calculated.The Archivist recorded.

But down here—

A supposedly worthless unranked citizen held a map of a world he intended to outgrow.

Noel stood.

And descended back into the city lights.
