Chapter 128 - A Long Battle Measured in Years

The Zerg Swarm's fleet was finally complete. They no longer feared any orbital force in the galaxy, save for the limitless numbers of the Tyranid Hive Mind. The gap between the two swarms was no longer one of quality, but merely of scale.

In localized skirmishes, the Zerg could completely overwhelm the Tyranid forces, but a simple "F2A" all-out charge was not enough to achieve a final, decisive victory. As the Tiamat Hive Fleet began another tactical retreat, the Overmind issued a cold command through the psionic link.

"Don't let them slip away. Hunt them down."

The Corruptor broods and the Leviathan fleet immediately gave chase. The Tiamat fleet had made a fatal error; escape was not an option for them. The Tyranid bio-ships still suffered from a fundamental lack of sub-light speed compared to the Zerg's refined thrusters. While the Tyranids could accelerate to near-light speed given enough time, the process left them vulnerable and sluggish in a pursuit.

The Corruptors quickly overtook the rear guard, entangling the massive Tyranid vessels and forcing them into a fight they couldn't win. As more Zerg reinforcements flooded the sector, one branch of the Tiamat fleet was effectively sentenced to death. Once this wing was dismantled, the remaining Tyranid forces in the system would be barely twice the size of the Zerg Swarm.

"That was a magnificent meal," the Overmind noted with grim satisfaction.

Behind the front lines, several Leviathans moved through the debris fields, using their massive tentacles to reel in the shattered hulls of Tyranid frigates and cruisers. This salvaged biomass immediately replenished the staggering amount of resources consumed during the recent production cycle.

The Overmind watched the starving Tyranids with detached interest. "I want to see how much longer they can last. They are losing ships without gaining any ground. A starving swarm is a desperate swarm."

The Tyranids were indeed hungry. While they had managed to consume some biomass from the Orks, it wasn't nearly enough to offset the loss of an entire fleet. In typical naval warfare, the Tyranids would recover their own dead alongside the enemy's ships to break even. But now, only the Zerg were feasting. The Tyranids were being bled dry.

At this rate, the Tiamat Hive Fleet would face total extinction. This wasn't hyperbole; history was full of Tyranid splinters that had been snuffed out after losing their momentum—like the Naga fleet or the ill-fated Gorgon fleet that had woken the Necrons. Without a crushing numerical advantage, a Hive Fleet was little more than a wandering target.

However, the Overmind remained cautious. He was waiting for the Tiamat Hive Fleet to activate the massive flesh-and-blood structure they had been protecting. He knew that a psychic construct of that magnitude wasn't just for show; it was a weapon.

"I'll have to make the final move eventually," the Overmind thought, staying hidden in the shadows of the Hive Mind while the Queen of Blades led the charge.

She commanded the Leviathans with lethal efficiency, using their enormous tentacles to spear the Tyranid ships and drag them into the Zerg's waiting maws. But just as victory seemed certain, two more Tiamat splinter fleets emerged from the void, rushing to support their dying kin.

"So, the retreat wasn't out of fear," the Overmind realized. "It was a lure. A tug-of-war."

He wasn't worried. The Oculus had already counted the enemy's numbers, and they still lacked the weight to crush the Zerg. However, a shadow fell over the battlefield as a truly ancient monstrosity appeared: an [Ancient Ship].

This biological titan was the second largest entity in the Tyranid arsenal, surpassed only by the Hive Mothership itself. At over forty kilometers long, it dwarfed even the Imperial Navy's legendary Gloriana-class battleships.

"Damn, that's a big one," the Overmind muttered. "Focus on the escorts first."

Larvae across a dozen worlds began to pupate, pushing the Corruptor count well past the ten-thousand mark. On the front lines, a thousand battle-hardened Corruptors began to pupate in open space, transforming into Brood Lords.

An Ancient Ship could not be killed by conventional naval fire alone. Its chitinous hull was thicker than the length of a Corruptor. To kill this behemoth, the Zerg would have to rot it from the outside and hollow it out from the inside.

The Brood Lords launched their Broodlings—living projectiles with no digestive systems, designed only to kill until their energy reserves ran dry. These "free" units were the perfect tools for a stalemate.

The conflict, which the Overmind would later record as the Battle of Tiamat, turned into a brutal campaign that lasted three long years. The Tiamat Hive Fleet funneled reinforcements from across the sector, while the Zerg mobilized every colonized planet to keep the Leviathans supplied with air power.

It was a clash of philosophies. One side was the Zerg, refining the genetic sequences of the galaxy to achieve perfection; the other was the Tyranids, evolving solely to consume all life.

After three years of unrelenting carnage, the result was final. The Tiamat Hive Fleet was annihilated. The path to Siafria, the jungle heart of the system, was finally open.

As the Leviathans turned toward the planet, the Overmind finally shifted his gaze elsewhere. Another Zerg fleet had just made contact with the Tau, and a new front was opening in the stars.
