Chapter 60 - First lesson

"She is aware of the danger?" he asked and I nodded "Then the repercussions of her actions belong to her." he said amused.

With that I let my spell end and the little monster dropped since it wasn't actually flying. It squawked in surprise at the sudden drop but Mina quickly snatched it from the air and cradled it to her chest making cooing noises at it. To exactly zero surprise the little monster wasted no time at all biting her, HARD. She screamed and dropped it as blood poured from the triangular wound the things beak had carved out of her forearm.-

I quickly cast [telekinesis] again to drag the thing over to me before it could finish it's "hunt" and take a chunk of her ankle too. It was licking it's lips while staring at everyone around us hungrily. I sighed and flicked it slightly harder than normal.

"We don't hunt people without a good reason!" I chastised it firmly.

"Chirp?"

"No being hungry is not a good reason." I answered sternly.

The little monster looked like it was about to cry but I just stared at it with out budging. It huffed and looked away when it's trick failed.

"Smart beast. Unusually so." Phineas said as he looked at it like he wanted to disect it.

The little monster shuddered under that gaze and used it's wings to cover it's head like that somehow made it invisible.

The conjuration master chuckled "Naïve though." he said amused.

I shrugged as I grabbed the thing and held it against my chest with my left arm "To be fair it was born yesterday." I pointed out.

"I suppose that makes sense. Now then could I trouble you to heal miss Red-eye? She is bleeding all over the floor and the cleaners get rather uppity about removing blood." he said and I sighed before holding out my right arm to heal the girl. A gentle golden light flowed from my palm like water and fell on her. The wound on her arm rapidly closed and vanished without so much as a scar. For extra measure I switched to my cleaning spell and removed the blood pooled on the ground and soaked into her clothes as well.-

"Maybe next time actually listen when someone is trying to warn you." I said to her before sitting next to a pillar and resting the little monster in my lap like a particularly murderous cat.

Mina pouted and glared but chose to let it go since I healed her and found her a spot to wait for whoever else was coming to the class. Phineas decided to start an hour later once it seemed no one else was coming.

"Todays lesson was originally going to be on the various planes of oblivion and the creatures there you might want to summon and those to avoid. I've decided to change it however as a much more rare example of conjuration magic is readily available to learn from." he said motioning towards me and the little monster.

"Seriously?" I asked with a groan.

He smirked "Yes, familiars!" he said with a chuckle.

"The [summon familiar] spell is the most basic of the basic for conjuration though?" one of my fellow students, a Breton man named Hadrian, said confused.

"You are correct but what is not widely known is that there are four confirmed types of familiars. The ones summoned via the [summon familiar] spell are affinitied familiars. This type is based off of whatever mortal beast you have the most natural affinity to and also the weakest of all types of familiars." Phineas explained seriously pausing to make sure everyone is following.

"The second kind of familiar is called planar familiars. These are much like the affinitied variant in that it is the creature you are most naturally inclined towards but chosen from across this plane and the various planes of oblivion as well. These familiars are the sort you normally see mages summon as permanent companions in this plane. Scamps, Clannfer, Daedroth, Elytra the list is as long as there are creatures in Oblivion. These familiars actively help a mage with their spells and rituals unlike the previously mentioned familiar type." he said waving his hand causing a purple portal to appear as a massive pale blue scaled and wart covered creature with ugly fat features on a humanoid body appeared.

"This is my planar familiar, an Ogrim." he said before banishing the foul creature back to Coldharbour, the realm of Molag Bal. "From what I'm told Alexan here also has a planar familiar. Why don't you summon it for the rest to see?" he asked with a smirk.

I sighed and summoned my toad since I gave up on any plans of slacking off during this lesson.

"And this deceptively peaceful looking creature is a Bothet, a powerful predator species native to the fields of regret." Phineas explained as he motioned to my toad that just stood there impassively like it couldn't even be bothered by the summon.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you." I warned Hadrian as he went to touch the toad.

"Why?" he asked confused.

"Because once you are in his mouth no one can save you." I said calmly.

"Ribbit!" the toad croaked a complaint at me stopping it's free meal from delivering itself.

Phineas banished the toad himself "He is quite right I'm afraid. Bothet produce a powerful acid that digests anything being swallowed the moment it enters the mouth. Your head would be gone before anyone could attempt saving you if it ate you." he said seriously making the others shudder in horror.

"And the third type of familiar?" Mina asked curiously.

"Soul bonded familiars. These are rare because they come with just as many downsides as they do benefits. Few are the mages who will have one of these but each and every one is a force to be reckoned with so long as they weren't foolish with the creatures they bonded with." he said sternly while staring at everyone but me heavily to get the point across before he continued.

"This type of familiar is one hand chosen by the mage who has it and ritually bonded to the very soul of that mage. This bond is a two way street however so any damage the familiar suffers is felt by the mage and vice versa. While the death of such a familiar is not innately fatal the mage rarely lives long afterwards because the death of such a familiar literally rips out a chunk of the soul. A sort of hollowness I can not even begin to explain. One so terrible it often strips the will to live from the mage in question." He said gravely.
