Chapter 189
Doris remained standing at the edge of the crater, watching Alex silently.
For several seconds, neither of them said anything. Alex's head remained lowered as he stared at his bloodied fists. The pain in his body was still as intense as ever, but it was nothing compared to the emptiness that had quietly settled inside his chest after the whole ordeal that had just happened not too long.
Then Doris slowly walked toward him. She didn't really say anything comforting like everything was going to be alright or that it wasn't the end of the world.
Instead, what she did was to simply place one hand gently on his shoulder in a comforting gesture.
She knew there were moments when words could make things worse rather than better. Sometimes, the best thing a person could do was simply remain there and let the other person know that they weren't alone.
So she stayed beside him in silence, even though he didn't react.
