Chapter 52 - The Glacial Wilds

The rain had only just stopped.

Water still clung to the edges of traffic lights, dripping rhythmically onto the wet pavement below.

The city had already returned to normal.

Cars crossed the intersection.

People hurried home beneath folded umbrellas.

Conversations blended with the distant hum of engines.

Life moved on... as though nothing extraordinary had ever happened here.

Zekai walked alone. His hands remained buried inside the pockets of his damp coat.

Every step echoed softly against the rain-soaked asphalt.

Then—he stopped.

Roughly fifty meters ahead...

something disturbed the air.

Not enough for ordinary eyes to notice.

To everyone else, the road looked completely normal.

Pedestrians crossed the street without hesitation.

Cars drove through the same location.

Even birds passed overhead without changing direction.

Yet...

Zekai saw it. A thin curtain of darkness stretched across the road.

Tiny black ripples spread across the surface as though the fracture had recognized him first.

It wasn't merely waiting—it was inviting him.

It wasn't solid. It wasn't liquid.

It resembled a transparent layer of black glass, gently rippling beneath reality itself.

The space behind it looked... wrong.

As though the world on the opposite side no longer obeyed the same rules.

A faint chill ran across his skin.

"...Another one." He didn't hesitate this time.

The first Reality Fracture had stolen everything from him.

This time...

he had chosen to enter.

This one... would give him the chance to take something back.

The crimson interface immediately flickered into existence.

Zekai's gaze lingered on the final line.

Remaining Lifespan −1 Year.

Silence.

"...One year..." He repeated the words quietly.

Then... a faint laugh escaped him.

Not because it was amusing—because he finally understood.

"...So... this is how you want to play." He slowly looked up at the rippling fracture.

His tired eyes gradually lost their hesitation.

In their place... resolve.

"I've spent my whole life running from things I couldn't change." He took one step forward.

"If getting stronger means walking through hell..."

Another step.

"...then I'll keep walking."

The black membrane rippled gently before him.

No fear remained in his expression.

No uncertainty. Only purpose.

Without another word... he reached out.

He looked back only once.

Greyhaven continued exactly as before.

Nobody noticed the impossible doorway standing in the middle of the street.

Then... he faced forward again.

His fingertips pierced the dark surface.

The membrane responded instantly.

VVVVVVMMMM—

Reality folded inward like disturbed water. The fracture expanded around him.

Then...

Zekai stepped through.

The black membrane swallowed him whole.

For a single heartbeat—Greyhaven disappeared.

The Reality Fracture rippled violently the moment Zekai stepped through it.

The distorted black membrane behind him folded inward before quietly sealing itself, erasing the path back as if it had never existed.

A freezing gust struck his face.

"...Cold." His boots sank into soft snow.

Zekai slowly lifted his head. His eyes widened.

An endless winter forest stretched beyond the mist.

Towering pine trees rose toward a pale sky, their branches buried beneath thick blankets of snow.

Crystal-blue sunlight filtered through the forest canopy, scattering across the frozen landscape until the entire world shimmered like glass.

Snowflakes drifted lazily through the silent air.

Nothing moved.

"...Woah." The cold smelled clean. Unlike Greyhaven, there was no smoke, no dust, and no human noise.

Only winter.

A quiet smile appeared on his face.

"Now..."

"...this is beautiful."

It didn't feel abandoned. It felt untouched.

Like the world had existed for thousands of years...

without ever belonging to mankind.

His breath escaped in white clouds.

Another icy breeze slipped beneath his coat.

Then—

A single snowflake drifted slowly through the air.

Zekai noticed it almost immediately.

He raised one hand, opening his palm beneath it.

The tiny snowflake descended gently...

And landed perfectly in the center of his hand.

He stared at it. For a brief moment, he forgot everything else.

The snowflake was impossibly delicate.

It began melting almost immediately against the warmth of his skin.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

He watched the tiny droplet disappear between his fingers.

"...I've never seen snow this clean."

Another breeze swept through the forest.

The temperature suddenly reminded him exactly where he was.

"Brr..."

He instinctively rubbed his arms.

"I really crossed dimensions wearing nothing but a coat."

A sigh escaped him.

"Next time..."

"I'm packing for another dimension."

Crunch.

Something landed on a nearby branch.

Zekai's expression sharpened instantly.

Without thinking—his right hand moved toward his empty waist before stopping midway.

He had almost forgotten.

Null Drakular no longer rested at his side.

The branch bent beneath the weight.

A graceful white deer leapt across the snow.

Its fur blended perfectly into the frozen landscape.

Its crystal antlers caught the sunlight, scattering tiny rainbows through the forest.

It bounded effortlessly between the trees... before vanishing into the endless white.

Zekai blinked.

"...Just a deer." He released the breath he had been holding.

"Don't scare me like that."

High above—dozens of black crows circled slowly across the pale sky.

Their distant cries echoed through the valley.

Zekai looked up.

"...Yeah. That's usually a bad sign."

He continued deeper into the forest.

Soon... the trees gradually thinned.

A broad clearing opened before him.

His instincts screamed.

Without hesitation—he immediately crouched behind a snow-covered pine.

Something enormous occupied the center of the clearing.

Slowly... he leaned forward.

Then he saw it. His breathing stopped.

A monstrous wolf.

Over seven meters tall. Dark silver fur.

Massive shoulders. Crimson eyes.

Its enormous jaws were buried inside the corpse of a snow deer.

Bone cracked loudly beneath its bite.

Fresh blood stained the untouched snow beneath it. Every movement carried impossible weight.

Its claws alone were larger than a human hand.

"Wolfrezon."

The creature hadn't noticed him.

Not yet.

"...That's not a predator," Zekai whispered.

His right hand hovered near his side, ready to call Null Drakular at a single thought.

"...That's a disaster wearing fur."

Before he could decide whether to retreat—

the Wolfrezon's ears twitched.

Its head slowly lifted.

Crimson eyes stared directly toward his hiding place.

The forest fell silent.

Zekai exhaled.

"...Great."

"It smelled me."
