Chapter 28 - Chapter 28:Our School Reunion

The winter sun felt gentle and warm.

The massive school gate was adorned with strings of tuberose and vibrant banners—

"25th Anniversary Reunion"

Stepping out of the car, Arindam paused for a moment. He felt a familiar flutter in his chest.

"I can't believe it... after all these years, we're walking through these gates again."

Bharsha stood beside him, draped in a light blue Jamdani saree, her hair left loose. She didn't look like a mother of three; she looked timeless.

"Today, we aren't office bosses or busy homemakers, Arindam... today, we are just that 16-year-old boy and girl."

As they crossed the threshold, the familiar clang of the school bell echoed through the air. It felt as if time had magically rewound twenty-five years.

Old class photos were lined up along the corridor walls. Arindam burst into laughter, pointing at one.

"Look! This group photo... I'm right there in the back row, peeking over someone's shoulder."

Bharsha traced the frame with her fingers. "And I'm right in the front. You always used to stand so far away."

Arindam teased, "Not far, just incredibly shy back then."

Bharsha winked at him. "Shy? Is that so? Then who was it that first proposed to me behind the old museum building?"

They both broke into peals of laughter.

A massive canopy was set up on the school field. Old classmates were hugging, playfully shoving, and some were even getting teary-eyed.

"Arindam! You old poet, get over here!"

Rahul was waving from a distance, with his wife Meher by his side.

"It's been ages! I see you've got quite a bit of silver in your hair now!" Rahul said, pulling him into a hug.

Arindam laughed back. "I won't even mention that growing bald spot of yours!"

Bharsha and Meher drifted off to a corner, lost in their own world of gossip. The laughter of old girlfriends made the field feel alive again.

Suddenly, an announcement echoed—the program was starting in the auditorium.

Entering the hall, they were greeted by the scent of old wooden benches. The familiar school logo was still there on the stage. The Principal, now retired and leaning on a cane, had come as the guest of honor.

In a trembling voice, he said, "When you left this school, your eyes were full of dreams to touch the sky. Today, I see the marks of experience. But remember, more important than winning life's battles is holding onto your old friendships and love."

Arindam listened intently. Bharsha silently took his hand in hers, squeezing it tight.

In the middle of the ceremony, a teacher jokingly announced, "Will the couple from this batch who started their romance in school and is still together please come up on stage?"

Hundreds of eyes turned toward Arindam and Bharsha. Whistles and applause filled the hall.

Though a bit embarrassed, Arindam held Bharsha's hand and walked up to the stage.

The teacher asked, "What is the secret to your long journey together?"

Bharsha took the mic and thought for a second. "Our story isn't dramatic. It was a simple friendship that started in Class 10... and it just grew deeper over time. We've fought, we've made mistakes. But we never stopped talking."

Arindam added, "We realized that love isn't just about being together, it's about giving each other the space to grow as individuals."

The entire auditorium erupted in a standing ovation.

After the ceremony, they slipped into their old classroom.

That broken bench by the window was still there.

Bharsha sat down and said, "Remember? This is where you gave me your first letter. It was in a blue envelope."

Arindam smiled. "And without even reading it, you hid it in your notebook and said—'Do your math first, or the teacher will scold you'."

Bharsha laughed. "You were quite the slacker."

Arindam stared out of the window. "I used to watch you play on the field from this very window during the break."

A moment of silence followed. Time seemed to stand still in that room.

The sun was setting outside, painting the sky in shades of vermilion. Everyone gathered for a group photo.

The photographer shouted, "Everyone get closer and smile!"

Arindam rested his arm on Bharsha's shoulder. The camera click captured the laughter of two people—where the innocence of their teenage years still flickered.

Walking out of the school gates, Bharsha let out a long sigh. "It feels strange. I'm thinking about how far we've come."

Arindam asked, "Do you have any regrets?"

Bharsha shook her head. "No. Only gratitude."

"For what?"

"That we didn't let go of each other's hand that day."

Arindam whispered, "And I won't let go today. Not ever."

On the drive back, stars began to twinkle in the sky.

Bharsha looked out the window and said, "Life is a lot like this school. In the beginning, we learn our lessons, and then we take the hard exams."

Arindam smiled. "And sometimes we come back to a reunion to realize—just how much we've actually learned about being human."

Today wasn't just about reminiscing—it was a celebration of their journey. Their young school romance had grown into a mature, sheltering tree. The field, the benches, the corridors—they were all witnesses.

They realized that time changes and people grow, but some loves are like the school bell—once it rings, the resonance stays with you for a lifetime.
