Chapter 37 - A Moment of Peace

Ava's POV

Reeves spent forty minutes on his phone and came back with a timeline.

They were moving at midnight. A location outside the city, further than the bounty's immediate reach, while the legal process built enough momentum to put Vitelli back behind bars and keep him there. Tonight they had the safe house and its locks and two agents in the front room and the particular suspended quality of a day that was waiting for something.

Leo thanked Reeves and Reeves went back to the front room and the kitchen was quiet again.

They stayed in it for a while, the two of them, finishing coffee that had gone lukewarm, not talking about the midnight timeline or the bounty or what moving outside the city actually meant. There was a limit to how long you could hold the large things at the front of your mind before your brain simply refused and made you think about something else.

She refilled her mug.

"Tell me something ordinary," she said.

He looked at her.
