"Sister Daisy," Tiara said in a reassuring voice, "please sit. Young Mistress is very easy to get along with. We eat with her every day. You truly do not need to be nervous."
Daisy looked at Tiara.
During the past few days, she had come to know the young woman who supervised the slaves. Tiara held a status far above hers, yet she had never abused her authority. She did not shout, nor did she strike. She only made sure the work was done.
That simple kindness had already earned Daisy's trust.
Slowly, she allowed herself to sit.
Her movements were careful, as if she feared that any sudden gesture might shatter the fragile miracle surrounding her.
Once everyone had been served, Mirella looked at Daisy, whose back was still slightly tense.
Her expression softened.
"There is no need to be so nervous," she said kindly. "Young Miss has a good heart. Tell us, Daisy, you said you were once a commoner. How did you become a slave?"
