Chapter 38 - Diwali Festival (part-1)

The morning sun filtered softly through Aarya's bedroom window, painting golden streaks on the walls. Today was no ordinary day—it was Diwali, the festival of lights, colors, and celebrations. Aarya stretched lazily, her heart fluttering in anticipation. She could already imagine the sparkling streets, the aroma of sweets, and the gentle chaos that filled the city during this special time.

Meanwhile, Hiten was at his home, carefully inspecting the kurta he had picked the day before. He frowned slightly at the embroidery, turning it in the light. "Perfect," he muttered, though the faint smirk on his lips betrayed his excitement.

By late morning, the duo met outside, exchanging playful glances. Aarya twirled in her flowing orange-and-gold lehenga, the fabric catching the light as if it had a life of its own.

"Hiten, look! The city is ready for Diwali," she exclaimed, eyes wide with delight.

Hiten adjusted his deep blue kurta with golden embroidery, grinning at her excitement. "And we're the brightest part of it," he said, gently brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. Aarya's cheeks flushed, and she ducked slightly, pretending not to notice.

They started walking through the bustling streets, where stalls overflowed with colorful decorations, diyas, and sweets. The air was a heady mix of incense, sugar, and the faint tang of fireworks. Children ran around holding sparklers, their laughter ringing through the lanes. Hiten nudged Aarya toward a rangoli competition stall.

"Let's try this," he suggested, kneeling beside her as she spread vibrant powders on the ground.

Aarya giggled, her fingers brushing against his as they worked side by side. "You're… surprisingly good at this," she teased, watching him carefully make patterns.

Hiten raised an eyebrow. "Surprisingly? I'm amazing, obviously. But I must admit, I've got the best teacher here." His gaze lingered on her, and Aarya's heart skipped a beat.

"Stop flattering me," she said, hiding a shy smile. "Focus on the design."

The rangoli took shape under their coordinated efforts—a swirl of colors forming a delicate floral pattern. They stepped back to admire their creation, and Hiten pretended to bow to her. "Masterpiece created, thanks to my assistant."

Aarya nudged him playfully. "Assistant? You mean partner in crime."

After the rangoli, they moved on to explore the festival's many stalls. Aarya pulled Hiten toward the sweets section, giggling as he hesitated in front of an array of jalebis, ladoos, and barfis.

"You have to try one!" she urged, picking up a sugar-coated jalebi and offering it to him.

Hiten accepted it with mock reluctance. "Fine, I'll suffer through this for you," he said, taking a bite and pretending to wince. "Too sweet. I demand compensation!"

"Compensation?" she asked, raising an eyebrow, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

"Yes, another jalebi!" he grinned. She laughed, shaking her head, and handed him a second one. "You're impossible," she said softly.

"And you love it," he replied, winking at her.

The afternoon sun began to fade as they wandered further into the festival, the streets glowing with twinkling diyas and fairy lights. The distant crackle of fireworks punctuated their laughter, and Hiten suddenly pulled a small velvet box from his pocket, pretending to casually check it.

"Hey… Aarya, I got something for you," he said, holding it out.

Aarya's eyes widened. She carefully opened the box to reveal a delicate bracelet, the metal catching the warm glow of the festival lights. "Hiten… it's beautiful!" she whispered, her fingers trembling slightly as she touched it.

"I saw it yesterday at the mall… and thought it would suit you perfectly," he said softly, watching her smile.

She slipped it onto her wrist, feeling a rush of warmth. "Thank you… it's perfect." She hugged him quickly, the moment fleeting but intimate.

With their hearts light and spirits high, they continued exploring the festival. Hiten insisted on letting her try a sparkler first, holding her hand as she waved it carefully. Tiny sparks reflected in their eyes, making the world around them seem magical.

"You're always so careful," she said softly.

"Because I care about you," he replied, leaning slightly closer. She blushed but said nothing, focusing on the sparkling light in her hand.

The day continued with laughter, small indulgences in sweets, and playful teasing. They wandered through stalls of toys, decorations, and handmade crafts. Hiten occasionally sneaked bites from her candy, and she retaliated with small flicks to his shoulder, both laughing at the gentle, harmless fun.

As evening approached, the festival lights shimmered brighter, casting a magical glow over the streets. Hiten and Aarya walked side by side, sharing quiet conversation, jokes, and soft glances. They paused at a street where families gathered around small firecrackers, the children's delighted shrieks filling the air.

Aarya leaned lightly on Hiten's shoulder. "This… this is the best Diwali ever," she whispered.

Hiten smiled, feeling a warmth settle in his chest. "It's perfect because you're here," he said softly. His thumb brushed hers gently, lingering for a moment. She looked up at him, eyes reflecting the festival lights, her heart fluttering.

As the night drew in, they walked toward a quieter lane, taking in the shimmering diyas and the distant bursts of fireworks. Their fingers intertwined naturally, and both felt a calm, content joy. The festival wasn't just lights or sweets—it was moments like these, shared in laughter, small gestures, and the unspoken connection between two hearts.

The evening ended with a quiet plan for tomorrow. Hiten glanced at her bracelet, a soft glow catching the light, and whispered, "Tonight… more fun, more memories."

Aarya nodded, smiling, feeling a warmth that lingered long after the sounds of the festival faded.
