Chapter 5 - Cucumbers

It's been about a week and a half since I came to terms with Anathasia's existence. To think I'd actually end up living with someone who looks so innocent yet-could end the world with a snap of her fingers if she wanted to.

Nonetheless, everything has been going quite well. We already split the household chores between us and switch every week.

Take this week for example- I'm in charge of the dishes, the kitchen, and the laundry, while she handles the dusting and cleaning around the house. Compared to the countryside, dust rarely built up around this house for some reason. Probably due to Anathasia's presence? Who knows. I wouldn't be surprised if she's purifying the air in some way.

Still, for someone who can bend reality... you'd think she wouldn't lose her mind over a piece of vegetable.

"H-hey, you okay?" Here I was, holding a cucumber in my hand, trying to comfort a terrified Anathasia from the other side of the kitchen counter, the color in her face, drained.

"Get that away from me!!!" She yelled, flailing her arms like she was dealing with some sort of monster.

But why?

I don't know for sure- but it all started a few minutes ago.

Since both of us were taking the same courses, during days where we didn't have any classes, we'd often find ourselves stuck inside the house. Like today for example.

While preparing lunch, which, I was planning on making a cucumber and tomato feta salad, she walked in, seemingly finished with her own share of chores before sitting on a chair from the other side of the counter from me.

"Whatcha making?" She asked, trying to get a peek on what I was doing while I ruffled through the contents in the fridge.

"A salad, a light snack or could still work as lunch."

"A salad?"

"A salad." I flatly replied. What's with her tone? Does she dislike vegetables or something?

"Ah, there it is." I muttered, picking out the cucumber from the fridge before turning around, only to see a terrified Anathasia with her gaze straight at the cucumber I was holding.

"... H-hey, you okay?" Confused, I tried asking- but the moment I took another step, she threw her slipper at the cucumber, slicing it clean in half as it zoomed past me.

"Get that thing away from meee!!!" She yelled, genuinely yelled, like she was genuinely terrified of something as harmless as a cucumber.

I stared at the other half of the cucumber in my hand, then back at her, flailing her arms like she was trying to defend herself against something.

Placing the piece of cucumber down on the counter, I immediately walked towards her, grabbing her wrist gently before shaking her.

"Calm down idiot! What's with you??" I exclaimed, watching as tears formed in the edge of her eyes.

Gradually, she calmed down, enough for me to talk with her properly.

I had her sit on a small chair near the door, watching her tremble from... what, a cucumber? Is this what they called irrational fear?

"What's gotten into you?" I questioned, trying to understand why she reacted like that.

"T-that... I don't like it, okay??"

"..." I paused, staring at her for a few seconds.

"What? What's wrong with that huh?" She squirmed in her seat, seemingly uncomfortable.

"Are you a cat or something?"

"...are you making fun of me?"

I went silent, pondering about how she reacted earlier. Seemingly noticing my silence, she added.

"It... It just feels like it shouldn't belong here, y'know?"

I looked back at her, deadpanned.

"You shouldn't be saying that Anathasia..." Probably realizing how unreasonable she sounded, she continued.

"That thing's case and my case are two different things!"

I sighed in of exasperation. Really, with her around, things could go from zero to a hundred in just seconds.

"Okay fine, no cucumbers, any other vegetables are fine, right?"

She stayed silent, but nodded slightly in response.

Seriously, are irrational fears not only limited to humans? Either way, I guess cucumbers are out of the menu from now on.

And so, instead of a salad, I ended up making Japanese curry rice in the end.

As we ate, I could see how different her behavior was now in contrast to how much she overreacted over something as small as a piece of cucumber.

"You can be pretty drastic with how you express your dislike for food, huh?" I mumbled, watching as she continued to eat her own share.

Confused, she looked at me while slightly tilting her head.

"You say something?"

I gently shook my head, brushing her off as I continued eating my share.

"It's nothing to fret about." I said dismissively, leaving her even more confused as she stared at me with that innocent look of hers. She'd be quite endearing if I didn't know better, but I guess that's part of her charm.

...

...What the hell do I mean charm-?

Right, it isn't like that. E

ither way, things carried on like usual as days passed. At least, until hell week- that is.
