Epilogue
I sat on the back porch, watching the sun begin to set. Pinks and oranges painted
the sky, leaving me breathless. My body was still covered in bandages, trying to heal
from what happened. It was mostly scarred, but some of the wounds were deeper than the
others. Body aching, I took in a deep breath. I heard the door open behind me, Milo
joining me outside in the yard. His bandage wrapped around his waist, covering the life
altering gash that almost ended his life; almost. He placed his arm around me, and I laid
my head on his shoulder, as he kissed my forehead. He handed me the cigarette he had
been smoking, and I inhaled it, watching the smoke resonate from my mouth.
I handed it back to him, gazing into his face.
We had survived so much together. We defeated the stalker, bringing closure to the
innocent families. Memorials were held shortly after, which Milo and I would have loved
to have attended had we not been recovering in the hospital. We were getting through
everything, moving on and starting anew. Senior year was about to begin, and we had lots
of plans to make. Leo had been stopping by frequently. Had he not called the police, Milo
would be dead, as would I."What are we doing?" I asked, beginning to smile.
"We, Violet Hargrove" he began, a loving grin spreading across his face.
"Are
surviving.
"
And that was all I needed to know, to be assured everything was going to be
alright.
