Soprano Residence, North Caldwell, NJ — April 10, 1999, 6:00 PM
The house was bigger than Vinnie expected. Not in square footage — though that was considerable — but in presence, the particular architectural confidence of a home built to project success rather than merely contain it. A driveway that curved. A lawn that had been maintained through winter by someone who understood that grass was a statement. The kind of house that said I made it in a language that required no translation.
Cars lined the street. Cadillacs, Lincolns, a Mercedes whose chrome caught evening light and threw it back with the arrogance of German engineering. Tommy parked the sedan three houses down — close enough to be accessible, far enough to be discreet.
"Stay here?"
"Stay here."
Vinnie walked alone. The bottle was under his arm — a 1985 Barolo from Sal's collection, the wine that had been sitting in the back of the kitchen cabinet behind inferior bottles like a king hiding among commoners. Enzo had identified it during a visit: "Your father was saving that. Giovanni Conterno — '85 was exceptional. He said it was for when something worth celebrating happened."
Something worth celebrating. Tony Soprano alive and home from the hospital. Close enough.
The front door was open — the universal signal of an Italian household expecting guests. Inside, the particular chaos of a gathering that existed at the intersection of celebration and obligation: voices overlapping, laughter that ranged from genuine to performative, the clink of glassware and the ambient warmth of a kitchen operating at capacity.

"He's getting there." The phrase carried maternal protectiveness — he's getting there meant he's alive and I'm making sure he stays that way. "Please, there's food in the kitchen. Sil is in the back."
The kitchen was extraordinary. Not restaurant extraordinary — home extraordinary, the kind of kitchen that produced meals from memory rather than recipe, where the stove knew its owner and the cutting boards bore the particular patina of decades of use. Trays of food covered every available surface: baked ziti, sausage and peppers, a prosciutto arrangement that would have made Satriale's jealous.
Vinnie's stomach responded. Seven o'clock that morning, he'd eaten toast — the last of the bread, purchased from a bakery whose credit he hadn't needed to use yet but might soon. The April tribute had emptied the safe. Four thousand dollars remained in reserves — a number that would have made the financial analyst in his past life schedule an emergency intervention. The business income would rebuild it, but the math between now and solvency was tighter than any margin he'd managed at his old firm.
He ate. A plate of ziti, properly sauced, the pasta cooked al dente in the way that only Italian women of a certain generation achieved — through instinct rather than instruction, the knowledge carried in hands rather than heads.
The backyard was where the real gathering happened. A patio that overlooked a pool — still water, late afternoon light, the kind of suburban serenity that existed in direct proportion to the violence required to afford it.
Tony sat in a lawn chair. The recovery was visible in his movement — careful, the deliberate motion of a man whose body was reminding him of recent damage with every adjustment. But the eyes were unchanged. Sharp, scanning, the assessment machinery operating at full capacity despite the bandages that the polo shirt's collar couldn't quite conceal.
Silvio stood to Tony's right. Paulie to his left. Christopher hovered. The geometry of loyalty, arranged in the particular configuration that said we're here, we survived, this is what it looks like when the throne holds.
Vinnie waited. He didn't approach immediately — the line of well-wishers moved at the pace of men who wanted to be seen paying respect without appearing to rush the wounded boss. Each approach followed the same choreography: handshake, words of concern, the respectful retreat that allowed the next man in line.
When his turn came, Tony's eyes found him before the handshake did.
"Marchetti."
"Tony." First name. The permission granted at Vesuvio, exercised for the first time in person. "I'm glad you're home."
"Makes two of us."
Vinnie presented the bottle. The Barolo's label was faded slightly — the particular aging of paper stored in ambient conditions, the visual evidence of a wine that had been waiting.
"My father was saving this for a special occasion. I think he'd want you to have it."
Tony took the bottle. Turned it. Read the label with the attention of a man who understood that wine, like people, improved with age and could also turn if the conditions were wrong.
"Conterno. Eighty-five." Tony's eyebrows lifted — the appreciation of a man who recognized quality. "Your old man had taste."
"He did."
"I'll save it." Tony set the bottle beside his chair with a care that suggested the saving was genuine rather than political. "For something worth celebrating."

The gathering continued. The pool caught his attention. Still water, late light, the surface reflecting sky in the particular way that suburban pools did when nobody was swimming and nobody was looking.
"The ducks. In the show, this is where it started — Tony watching ducks in his pool, the family of ducks that became the symbol of everything he was afraid of losing. "No ducks today. Just water. And a man in a lawn chair who survived an assassination attempt ordered by his mother and uncle, sitting in his backyard while wiseguys eat his wife's ziti and pretend the world isn't built on the kind of violence that put bullets in his body two weeks ago."
The pool was ordinary. It was anything but.
"Hey."
Tony's voice. Behind him. Vinnie turned.
Tony had risen from the lawn chair — the movement careful, a hand pressing his side where the bandages lived, the particular effort of a man whose body was cooperating with his intentions at approximately seventy percent capacity.
"Walk with me."
They moved along the pool's edge. The gathering's noise receded — the particular acoustics of a backyard that placed the pool at a distance from the patio, creating a pocket of relative quiet.

"I don't know what you mean, Tony."

"Yeah." Tony nodded. "That's the right answer."
The pool reflected them both — two men standing at the edge of still water, their shapes distorted by the surface's gentle movement. Tony didn't say more. He didn't need to. "Just doing what made sense."
"Most guys, they would've broken the guy's legs. You bought a piece of his business." Tony's eyes found Vinnie's. The assessment was direct — no half-smile, no distance, the full attention of a man who evaluated people the way other men evaluated real estate. "Your father wasn't like that."
"Different times."
"Same business." The echo of Silvio's words — the consigliere's phrase in the boss's mouth, the organizational DNA expressing itself through different voices. "I like what you're doing. Keep doing it."

They walked back toward the patio. The gathering's noise reassembled around them — laughter, glass, the particular warmth of men who'd survived a crisis and were celebrating the survival the only way they knew how.
Carmela intercepted with coffee. "Vinnie, right? Please, sit. You eat enough?"
"More than enough. The ziti was extraordinary, Mrs. Soprano."
"At least someone has manners." The comment was directed at the room in general and Tony in particular, the verbal architecture of a woman who distributed approval and criticism with the same hand. "Please come back anytime."

"He knows. Tony Soprano knows that I warned him, and he chose not to say it directly, and I chose not to confirm it directly, and the mutual silence is its own form of trust. A pact between two men who understand that some debts are best acknowledged by never being named."
"And the collection. He called it smart. The partnership angle — the same approach that Deluca recognized, that Conte marveled at, that Silvio presented as evidence of a new way. Tony Soprano, boss of the DiMeo crime family, just told me to keep doing what I'm doing."
The phone — not the car phone, the cellular that Enzo had procured for operational communication — sat in Vinnie's pocket alongside the memory of another call. Elena Moretti, six days ago. The meeting at a coffee shop in Hoboken — neutral ground, public space, the geographic compromise between her office and his operation.
She'd asked about waste contracts. He'd deflected with charm. She'd pushed. He'd offered transparency on the legitimate side of the business — permits, routes, municipal agreements — and opacity on everything else. The conversation had lasted forty-five minutes and produced no actionable intelligence for either side, which meant both sides had won and both sides were still playing.
"She's dangerous. Not because of the files or the badge or the prosecutorial authority — because I like talking to her. Because the way she leans forward when she's listening makes me forget that she's listening for evidence. That's the kind of danger the system can't measure and the morality index can't track."
Tommy turned into the Marchetti driveway. The house was dark except for the porch light — the timer that Vinnie had set to create the illusion of a home that expected its occupant, the domestic theater of a man who lived alone in a house built for a family.
"Tommy. I need you to do something."
"Name it."
"Find me a private investigator. Someone discreet. Ex-cop, maybe. Someone who can look into things across the river without making noise."
Tommy's cigarette paused. "Across the river?"
"My father's business. The meetings in Manhattan. Enzo mentioned them — I want to know more."
"That's... dangerous."
"I know. That's why I need someone good. Someone who's not connected to us."
The car idled. Tommy's jaw worked — the particular motion of a man processing a request that sat at the intersection of loyalty and concern.
"I know a guy. Lou Calvano. Used to be on the job — JCPD, detective bureau. Retired, does private work. Quiet."
"Set the meeting."
