Chapter 66 - Chapter 68 Part II — When Fire Bleeds

Drakari Core System — 11 Hours After Initial Engagement

Hive retreat did not mean defeat.

It meant recalculation.

And Mark IV had learned.

I. The Return of the Swarm

"Long-range distortion detected!"

Arcturus did not look surprised.

"Vector?"

"Not from outer perimeter."

Pause.

"From inside the debris field."

Hive wasn't retreating.

It was hiding.

Broken carriers.

Dead biomass.

Shattered lattice.

All of it began moving.

Not forward.

Inward.

Reassembling.

Drakari Command Bridge

"They're using their own corpses as shield mass."

"Is that even allowed?!"

A Drakari general mutters:

"War doesn't have rules."

II. The Phoenix Reaction

Arcturus folded his hands behind his back.

"Signal all wings."

"Pattern Spiral-Three was phase one."

"Now we move to Pattern Ashfall."

One officer swallowed.

"That's a saturation collapse formation."

"Yes."

Red Phoenix shifted.

Not spear formation.

Not tight symmetry.

They expanded.

Each sub-fleet forming independent strike arcs.

Hive cluster condensed into massive sphere of rotating debris and bio-metal.

Absorption density increasing.

III. The First Real Hit

Without warning—

Hive fired.

Not plasma.

Not lattice beams.

Mass drivers.

Compressed debris accelerated at relativistic speed.

One Phoenix-class battlecarrier struck directly.

Shield collapsed instantly.

Hull ruptured.

Explosion ripped through vacuum.

Bridge went silent.

First major loss.

"Casualties?"

"Eighty thousand crew, sir."

Silence.

Even Arcturus closed his eyes briefly.

Just one second.

Then:

"Continue Pattern Ashfall."

IV. Phoenix Marines

Inside drifting wreckage—

Hive boarding organisms deployed.

Red Phoenix Marine Legion activated.

Gravity boots lock.

Corridor lights flicker.

Sergeant Kael shouts:

"Form wedge! No heroics!"

A marine mutters:

"Sir, we're literally on a burning wreck in space."

Kael responds:

"Then die professionally."

Hive bio-forms surge.

Marines switch to anti-adaptive pulse rifles.

First volley melts three.

Fourth adapts.

Kael switches frequency manually.

"Stop using default settings, idiots!"

Close-quarter combat.

Metal floor slick with organic residue.

One marine gets dragged.

Another grabs him by the armor cable and yanks him back.

"Lunch is over, bug!"

The marines hold.

Evac shuttle arrives.

They retreat in disciplined formation.

Battlecarrier lost.

Crew not entirely.

V. Hive Evolves Again

Back in space—

Hive sphere begins rotating faster.

Bio-metal outer layer turns dark.

Snow's distant voice from Sol:

"Warning: Energy absorption threshold rising."

Arcturus mutters:

"They're preparing reflection."

Hive sphere suddenly redirects Leviathan's prior energy signatures.

Stored stellar radiation fired back outward.

One dreadnought vaporized.

Not shattered.

Gone.

VI. The Moment of Fire

Drakari begin panicking.

"They can reflect Leviathan!"

Arcturus finally raises his voice.

"Enough."

Leviathan moves forward alone.

"Core alignment to 19%."

Bridge gasps.

"That exceeds safe battlefield output!"

"Yes."

He stares at the Hive sphere.

"You learned from our fire."

Pause.

"Now learn from our ashes."

VII. The Ashfall Maneuver

All 20 sub-fleets cut engines.

No firing.

No movement.

Hive sphere rotates, confused.

Leviathan begins emitting unstable energy pulses.

Not concentrated.

Erratic.

Chaotic.

Impossible to absorb cleanly.

Hive attempts reflection.

Reflection fails.

Energy destabilizes outer debris mass.

Arcturus whispers:

"Now."

All 20 sub-fleets fire simultaneously.

Different frequencies.

Different vectors.

Hive cannot unify defense.

Sphere implodes.

Debris field erupts outward.

Leviathan punches through center.

Core annihilated.

VIII. Aftermath

Silence.

Debris drifting.

Three Sol capital ships lost.

Hundreds damaged.

Millions of drones expended.

Drakari fleet remains intact.

Drakari General transmits:

"You saved our capital."

Arcturus replies calmly:

"No."

"You held long enough."

Transmission ends.

No speeches.

IX. Quiet Bridge Moment

Junior officer whispers:

"We lost too many."

Arcturus looks at starfield.

"Then we burn hotter."

Pause.

"Signal Daniel."

"Message?"

"Red Phoenix remains operational."

X. Astra Observes (Vault)

Astra pulses.

"We felt loss."

Snow responds softly:

"Yes."

Astra:

"Fire is pain."

Snow:

"Fire is transformation."

XI. Coalition Watching

Secret channel.

Threx speaks quietly:

"They lost ships."

Serelis nods:

"And still dominated."

Talvek mutters:

"They fight like extinction is impossible."

Vaesh'ra whispers:

"They fight like it already happened once."

Red Phoenix stabilizes Khar'Voss.

But Hive learned something dangerous:

Reflection possible.

Overdrive predictable.

Losses acceptable.

Next time—

They won't fight Phoenix alone.

End of Part II.
