Elena hadn't slept all night.
Her thoughts kept spinning around Marco, the betrayal, and the fear in Raven's eyes the night before. But beneath it all was something stronger — determination. She wasn't going to be just "the girl to protect." She was done feeling powerless.
The next afternoon, she found Raven waiting near the school gate, arms crossed, expression unreadable.
"You look exhausted," he said.
"I feel fine," she replied, walking up to him. "And I'm not exhausted. I'm ready."
Raven raised an eyebrow. "Ready for what?"
"To not be a victim," she said.
He stared at her, a mix of surprise and something else flickering in his dark eyes. "Elena…"
"I mean it," she interrupted gently. "I know your world isn't safe. I know the people around you — even the ones you trust — can betray you. But I'm not leaving. I'm not hiding. I'm not just going to watch from the sidelines anymore."
Raven's jaw tightened. For years, he had handled everything alone. He was used to controlling danger, controlling outcomes, controlling people. And yet, hearing her say this made something inside him shift.
"You don't have to do this," he said quietly, almost pleading.
"I do," she said firmly. "If you want to protect me, let me help you. Let me be part of this. Not a damsel in danger. Not a burden. Part of the fight."
He studied her for a long moment. The sunlight caught the edges of her glasses, the determined set of her jaw, the quiet fire in her eyes.
"You really mean that?" he asked.
"Yes," she said, stepping closer. "I trust you, Raven. But I trust myself too."
The tension between them was thick, but this time it wasn't fear. It was respect. It was understanding. It was… something more.
Raven finally nodded. "Okay. But you follow my rules. No heroics. Not yet. You promise me that?"
"I promise," she said, though neither of them truly believed it would be that simple.
He extended his hand. Elena took it, and for the first time, it felt like they were standing side by side — not protector and protected, not gangster and nerd, but equals.
The world outside kept moving. Rumors, threats, and danger weren't gone. But for the first time, Elena realized something important: she wasn't just surviving Raven's world — she was becoming a part of it.
And Raven? For the first time in years, he didn't feel alone.
Because standing together wasn't just safer. It was real.
And maybe, just maybe, it was enough to face whatever betrayal or danger came next.
To be continued…
