It was an ordinary primary school in Singapore. It was a very normal day for me, and I didn't expect anything to happen. I was seated in a chair beside the window and looked to my left as if I had a premonition. And guess what I saw! The light from the fluorescent tube shone on a boy, and in that moment, he was the most handsome boy I had ever seen. My heart skipped a beat, and I was screaming internally: "Oh my god, I like him so much!"
He had caught my attention, but I only planned to watch him from a distance and get to know him through observation. I never thought of becoming friends with him because I was an introvert; I was only brave enough to talk to my deskmate because we had to sit together for the whole lesson. If I didn't talk to my deskmate, the lessons would be incredibly boring.
After that Math lesson, it was Form Teacher's Time (FT Time). It was the second semester of Primary 3. My two form teachers, Ms. Teo and Ms. Lee, walked into the classroom. One of them announced that we had to change seats that day. I wasn't surprised, as we changed seats almost every semester, but I started to feel anxious about who my new deskmate would be.
'Now, all of you stand at the back of the class until I call your name and tell you where to sit,' Ms. Teo said into her mic. It began to get crowded at the back until most of the names had been called.
'Maisie and Silas, you two are sitting together. Maisie, you sit on the left here, and Silas, you sit on the right.' My heart did a literal somersault. The boy I liked was going to be my deskmate. It felt like a sign that we were destined to cross paths.
So his name is Silas... what a nice name!
