Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: City News

November arrived with a quiet urgency. The air was crisp in the mornings, carrying a faint chill that hinted at the coming cool season. The streets of Linabuan Sur were familiar and comforting, yet Mira's heart felt heavier with each passing day. Something was coming, something she had been trying not to think about.

One afternoon, as the sun began to dip behind the hills, Mira sat on the wooden bench, sketchbook open but untouched. Her thoughts were elsewhere, swirling around a phone call she had received earlier that day. Eli had called from the city. His voice was soft, careful, trying not to betray worry, but it carried news that made her stomach sink.

"My mom needs treatment again," he said. "We'll have to go back to the city next week."

Mira's hands tightened around the edges of her sketchbook. The words landed like stones in her chest, heavy and impossible to ignore. She stared at the horizon, the gold and pink streaks of sunset blurring as if the sky itself understood the sudden ache in her chest.

"I'm going to miss this," she whispered, voice barely audible over the wind brushing through the acacia leaves.

"Me too," he replied, distant through the phone but close in her mind. "I'll come back when I can. I promise."

She held the phone for a moment longer, listening to the faint rustle of city sounds on the other end. Then she hung up, feeling the emptiness settle around her. The hill, which had been her anchor, now felt like a quiet witness to her longing. Even as the sunset blazed across the horizon, warm and alive, her heart felt the absence of him more sharply than ever.

Mira stayed on the hill until the last streaks of light disappeared. She sketched, her pencil moving automatically, drawing the crooked tree, the uneven bench, and the slope of the hill. Her lines were heavier than usual, filled with tension, longing, and memories. She did not notice the time passing. She did not notice the cool air settling over her skin. She only felt the weight of impending separation and the sudden clarity of what Eli meant to her.

When she finally walked home, the streets were quiet, the lights of the town flickering softly. Mira's steps were slow. She held her sketchbook to her chest, feeling the pulse of emotion it carried. The letters, the sketches, the memories they were not enough to fill the sudden emptiness she felt knowing he would leave again.

That night, Mira lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. She thought about the first time she had seen Eli on the hill, the first smile he had given her, the quiet afternoons spent watching the sun melt into the horizon. She realized that life, with all its changes and departures, had a strange rhythm sometimes leaving her breathless, sometimes offering moments of connection that felt like sunlight breaking through clouds.

She whispered softly into the darkness:

I'll wait. I'll keep the hill. I'll keep the sunsets. I'll keep him in my heart.

And in that quiet promise, she felt a flicker of strength. The hill had taught her patience. The letters had taught her hope. And now, this looming separation would teach her resilience. She was beginning to understand that life did not pause for absence, but she could carry memory, love, and hope with her wherever she went.

Outside, the wind rustled the leaves of the acacia, whispering secrets only she could hear. Mira closed her eyes, imagining Eli sitting somewhere far away, drawing city sunsets, thinking of her, counting days until he could return. And for the first time that evening, she smiled.

Even if the hill felt emptier without him, it was still hers. Even if the sunsets now carried a tinge of sadness, they still promised beauty. And even if life moved faster than she could catch, she knew she could endure.
