Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Waiting Without Fear

The days after the exam felt strangely empty.

For months, Mira had a clear goal: study, review, prepare.

Now there was nothing to prepare for.

Just waiting.

And waiting had always been the hardest part.

The results would be released in two weeks.

Fourteen days.

Mira tried not to count them, but somehow her mind did it automatically.

Day one.

She cleaned her room.

Day two.

She helped longer at the bakery.

Day three.

She reorganized her notes even though she no longer needed them.

Her hands wanted to stay busy.

Her thoughts didn't.

Eli became quieter again.

Not cold.

Just distant.

He sent updates about training.

Long day.

Tired.

We practiced drills.

She replied with encouragement.

Rest well.

You can do it.

Don't forget to eat.

Their conversations were simple now.

Polite.

Supportive.

But lighter.

Like something fragile that both of them were careful not to press too hard.

One afternoon, Adrian visited the bakery.

"You look bored," he said, leaning on the counter.

"I am."

"Waiting is torture."

She laughed softly. "Yes."

He ordered bread he didn't really need.

"You ever think about backup plans?" he asked.

"For what?"

"If we don't pass."

Mira paused.

Before, that thought would have made her panic.

Now she shrugged slightly.

"I'll try again."

"That simple?"

"It's not the end of the world."

He studied her face like he was seeing something new.

"You changed," he said.

She didn't deny it.

"I had to."

That evening, Eli called unexpectedly.

His voice sounded clearer than before.

"How's waiting?" he asked.

"Annoying."

He chuckled.

There was a small pause.

"I might be assigned to a different city next month," he said carefully.

Her chest tightened.

But not the way it used to.

"Oh."

"It's not final yet."

"I see."

Another silence.

"Say something," he said softly.

Mira looked at the dark sky outside her window.

"What do you want me to say?"

"I don't know."

She thought carefully.

"I hope it's good for you," she answered honestly.

He was quiet for a long time.

"You're not asking me to stay."

It wasn't a question.

Mira swallowed.

"I don't want you to choose based on me."

That was the truth.

The old Mira would have begged.

Would have asked if he could reconsider.

Would have turned his future into something that depended on her presence.

But she couldn't do that anymore.

Because she understood now

Love shouldn't feel like a cage.

After the call ended, she felt a small ache in her chest.

Growth wasn't painless.

It just didn't break her anymore.

Day ten.

Her mother noticed her staring at nothing during dinner.

"You're thinking too much," her mom said gently.

"Maybe."

"About him or the results?"

Mira blinked.

"Both."

Her mother smiled knowingly.

"Whatever happens, life will continue."

"I know."

"And you will still be you."

That sentence stayed with her.

Day twelve.

Adrian texted her.

Results in two days.

Her heart skipped.

So it was real now.

She stared at the calendar.

Two more sleeps.

That night, she walked to the hill again.

The wind was stronger than usual.

She sat on the bench and hugged her arms around herself.

"I'm scared," she admitted.

Not just of failing.

But of passing.

Of change.

Of people leaving.

Of becoming someone new.

She closed her eyes.

"I can handle it," she whispered.

Because deep down, she believed that now.

Whether Eli moved cities.

Whether she passed or didn't.

Whether friendships shifted.

She would survive it.

She wasn't the girl who waited helplessly anymore.

She was someone who moved, even while waiting.

Her phone buzzed.

Eli.

Whatever happens with the results, I hope you don't forget me.

Her breath caught.

She stared at the message for a long time.

Then she typed slowly:

I won't forget you.

She hesitated.

Then added:

But I won't stop my life either.

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally, he replied:

I know.

And somehow, that felt like both an ending and a beginning at the same time.

Day fourteen arrived quietly.

Tomorrow, everything might change.

But tonight, Mira lay in bed feeling something steady inside her.

Not fear.

Not excitement.

Just readiness.

Whatever the result was

Whatever direction life chose

She would walk toward it.

Not because someone was pulling her.

But because she was choosing to move.

And that made all the difference.
