Chapter 55 - Skill Tokens & Upgrades

They made it back to the sectional an hour later, not thirty minutes.

Riri's body felt loose and satisfied in ways that made thinking about stat optimization difficult. Samael sat beside her with his arm along the back of the sectional, hand resting on her shoulder, looking equally content.

The remaining loot still waited. Three Skill Upgrade Tokens. One Legendary Equipment Cache. The Sanctuary Expansion Token. The Companion Ability Unlock Stone.

"Skill tokens first," Samael said. His voice had that specific roughness that came after extended physical activity. "Then equipment. Then we decide on the Sanctuary expansion and companion unlock."

Riri pulled up the first Skill Upgrade Token.

[SKILL UPGRADE TOKEN]

[Effect: Upgrades one existing skill to the next tier OR unlocks a new skill within your Class]

[Select skill to upgrade:]

Her skill list appeared. Tame Beast, Shadow Step, Shared Senses, Pack Tactics, Danger Sense, Absolute Evasion, Bond Resurrection.

Bond Resurrection was already emergency-tier. Absolute Evasion saved her life once per day. Danger Sense had proven essential for threat detection.

"Shadow Step," she said. "It's my primary mobility. Upgrading it means better positioning in combat."

She selected the skill and confirmed the upgrade.

[SHADOW STEP - UPGRADED]

[New Effect: Teleport up to 50 feet (increased from 30 feet)]

[New Effect: Cooldown reduced to 3 seconds (reduced from 5 seconds)]

[New Feature: Can teleport one additional person or companion with you]

Fifty feet range. Three second cooldown. And she could bring two people with her now. That last feature changed tactical options completely. She could extract Samael from danger, relocate companions mid-combat, or pull injured allies to safety.

"Good upgrade," Samael said, reading the notification through the Bond. "The 2 person carry feature is huge."

She used the second token on Pack Tactics.

[PACK TACTICS - UPGRADED]

[New Effect: Tamed creatures within 150 feet gain +40% Attack and Defense (increased from +25% within 100 feet)]

[New Feature: Host gains +10% to all stats for each active companion (max 4 companions = +40% total)]

Forty percent stat boost when all four companions were active. That pushed her effective Combat Power past twenty-seven thousand without accounting for companion damage output.

The third token went to Tame Beast.

[TAME BEAST - UPGRADED]

[New Effect: Can bond with creatures up to 20% HP (increased from 10% HP)]

[New Effect: Success rate increased significantly]

[New Feature: Can attempt to bond with Boss-tier creatures]

Boss-tier bonding. Riri stared at the notification. Every Boss they'd faced had been Elite or World Boss classification. If she could bond with those...

"That's terrifying," Samael said. "In the best way."

System #2's interface appeared.

[You could bond with the Corrupted Archbishop if you fought him again, Host!]

[Or the Void Cardinal!]

[Boss-tier companions would be EXTREMELY powerful!]

"The Void Cardinal nearly killed both of us," Riri said.

[But imagine if it was on YOUR side next time!]

Fair point.

Samael opened his own Skill Upgrade Tokens. She watched through the Bond as he upgraded Kinetic Manipulation, Kinetic Barrier, and unlocked a new ability called Kinetic Singularity that could compress matter to the point of collapse.

When the upgrades finished, his Combat Power had jumped to thirty-one thousand.

"Equipment cache," Riri said.

She pulled up the Legendary Equipment Cache and opened it.

[LEGENDARY EQUIPMENT CACHE - OPENED]

[You have received: Crown of the Beast Sovereign (Legendary)]

[Effect: +50 Charisma, +30 Intelligence]

[Passive: All tamed creatures gain +25% to all stats]

[Passive: Can communicate telepathically with bonded companions at any distance]

[You have received: Cloak of Eternal Shadows (Legendary)]

[Effect: +60 Agility, +40 Constitution]

[Passive: Shadow Step costs reduced by 50%]

[Passive: Grants perfect invisibility for 10 seconds after each Shadow Step]

[You have received: Ring of Companion Bond (Legendary)]

[Effect: +20 to all stats]

[Passive: Companion HP regeneration increased by 100%]

[Passive: Can revive a fallen companion once per 24 hours at 50% HP]

Three Legendary pieces. All perfectly suited to her build. The Crown boosted companion effectiveness and gave telepathic communication. The Cloak made Shadow Step nearly free and added invisibility. The Ring gave defensive stats and companion resurrection.

She equipped all three immediately.

The Crown materialized as a thin circlet of dark metal, settling into her hair like it weighed nothing. The Cloak replaced her A-Grade Shadow Resistance piece, flowing across her shoulders in fabric that seemed to absorb light. The Ring joined the others on her fingers.

Her stats shifted.

[Strength: 112 → 132]

[Charisma: 328 → 398]

[Intelligence: 251 → 281]

[Agility: 347 → 407]

[Constitution: 188 → 228]

[HP: 3,347 → 3,547]

[Combat Power: 19,834 → 23,891]

Nearly twenty-four thousand Combat Power. With the Pack Tactics boost active and all four companions fighting, her effective strength would push past sixty thousand.

Through the Bond, she felt Samael's satisfaction. Not jealousy. Just pride that she was getting stronger, harder to kill, more capable of surviving the missions that would keep coming every month for the rest of their lives.

"You're beautiful," he said.

She turned to look at him. His gaze tracked across her face, lingering on the Crown, then dropping to the Cloak's dark folds.

"I look the same."

"You look like a queen." His hand moved from her shoulder to cup her jaw. "My queen."

Heat spread through her chest. The possessiveness in his voice was absolute, and through the Bond she felt how much he meant it. She wasn't just his partner. She was his, claimed and protected and cherished in ways that would get violent if anyone tried to challenge it.

"Your queen," she agreed.

He kissed her. Slow and thorough, his hand sliding into her hair, careful of the Crown. When he pulled back, his breathing had changed.

"Food," he said. "Before I forget we're supposed to eat."

They moved to the kitchen. Samael pulled ingredients from the System-stocked supplies while Riri sat at the counter and watched him work. The companions had migrated during the loot opening. Loki claimed the floor by the island. Kirin perched on the back of a chair. Vesper materialized on the counter edge. Vermillion settled on the light fixture, butterflies arranged in perfect symmetry.

"The Sanctuary expansion," Samael said while chopping vegetables. "What room do you want?"

Riri considered. The Sanctuary had bedroom, kitchen, living area, reading room, training yard, roof terrace, and the medical bay System #2 had added. What were they missing?

"Workshop," she said. "For gear maintenance and crafting. We've been using the kitchen counter to clean weapons and the bedroom floor to sort loot. A dedicated space would be better."

"Workshop." He nodded, satisfaction pulsing through the Bond. "Smart. Where?"

"Second floor. Between the bedroom and the medical bay."

"I'll configure it tonight."

They ate standing at the counter. Efficient. Practical. The food was good but neither of them paid much attention to flavor. Just fuel.

When the plates were cleared, Samael's hand found her hip. "The Companion Ability Unlock Stone. Which companion gets it?"

Riri pulled up the stone's description again.

[COMPANION ABILITY UNLOCK STONE (MYTHIC)]

[Grants one bonded companion a new ability outside their species' normal skill tree]

[Ability selected by Host based on companion's latent potential]

One companion. One new ability. Permanent choice.

She studied each of them. Loki with his Alpha skills and pack coordination. Kirin with lightning mastery and aerial bombardment. Vesper with shadow manipulation and stealth. Vermillion with HP drain and support abilities.

"Loki," she said finally. "He tanks. A new defensive ability would make him even harder to kill, which means better aggro management."

Through the telepathic link the Crown provided, she felt Loki's attention sharpen. The massive wolf lifted his head, glowing eyes fixed on her.

You're giving me the stone? His voice in her mind was rough, layered with pack hierarchy awareness.

You're Alpha, she sent back. You lead the pack in combat. Making you stronger makes all of us safer.

Loki's tail moved once. Acceptance. Pride.

Riri activated the Companion Ability Unlock Stone. Golden light surrounded Loki, bright enough that Kirin turned his head away and Vesper shadow-stepped to the ceiling. Vermillion's butterflies scattered, then reformed.

The light pulsed three times, then condensed into Loki's chest.

[COMPANION ABILITY UNLOCKED]

[Loki - Alpha Direwolf]

[New Ability: Pack Guardian's Aegis]

[Effect: Creates a protective barrier around all pack members within 30 meters]

[Barrier absorbs 40% of incoming damage]

[Duration: 30 seconds]

[Cooldown: 5 minutes]

A barrier. Pack-wide. Forty percent damage reduction for everyone within range.

That changed formation strategy completely. Loki could activate his barrier and cover Riri, Samael, and all three other companions simultaneously. Combined with Samael's kinetic barrier, they'd have layered protection that would make surviving A-Rank content significantly easier.

Through the Bond, Riri felt Samael's immediate tactical recalculation. He was already planning how to coordinate Loki's barrier with his own, timing activations to maintain continuous coverage.

"Perfect choice," he said.

Loki stood and moved to Riri's side, pressing his massive bulk against her leg. Through the telepathic link she felt his satisfaction. Not just from the new ability, but from the confirmation that she trusted him enough to invest in his strength.

Thank you, Alpha.

You've earned it.

The evening settled into comfortable quiet. Samael configured the workshop expansion while Riri reviewed their updated stats and equipment. The companions arranged themselves around the living area in their preferred spots.

Through the windows, the Hub sprawled below them. A million Players running their own calculations, forming their own strategies, trying to survive another month.

Riri and Samael had cleared A-Rank content. Nearly died. Come back stronger. Opened Mythic-grade loot. Upgraded their entire build.

And they still had three weeks before the next Mandatory Mission deadline.

"What rank next?" Riri asked.

Samael looked up from the workshop interface. "A-Rank again. Prove the Void Cardinal was an anomaly and we can handle standard content consistently."

"And if it wasn't an anomaly?"

His expression didn't change but through the Bond she felt his answer before he spoke it. "Then we get stronger until anomalies don't matter."

Simple. Direct. Absolutely certain.

Riri leaned back against the sectional and let the Bond hum between them. Samael's presence solid beside her, companions scattered around the room, their Sanctuary warm and secure around them.

They'd survived the impossible. Together.

Everything else was just preparation for doing it again.
