Chapter 19 - Beneath the Mountain’s Roar

The entrance swallowed them whole.

The moment the five cultivators stepped inside the mountain cavern, the air changed.

It was thick.

Heavy.

Alive.

Spiritual energy pulsed through the stone walls like veins beneath skin. Crystals embedded in the rock glowed faintly blue and gold. Spiritual stones jutted from cracks in the walls, some small as pebbles, others the size of fists.

Han Wei let out a low whistle."This place alone could sustain a small sect for decades."

Lan Jian's eyes sharpened. "Don't get distracted. Places rich in spiritual veins always attract predators."

Ling Yue stepped closer to one glowing rock, her eyes reflecting the light."The spiritual flow is so pure," she murmured. "It feels different from our sect grounds."

Mo Xuan said nothing.

He felt it too.

But beneath the purity—

There was something darker.

Lan Xue suddenly stopped walking.

"Wait."

Her voice dropped.

"I sense something deeper inside. A powerful aura. Dangerous."

Lan Jian nodded slowly. "I feel it as well. The energy converges toward the mountain's core."

They tightened formation and moved further inward.

The tunnel widened into a cavern hall, illuminated by natural crystal formations. Shadows stretched long across jagged stone pillars.

Then—

A tremor.

Low.

Subtle.

Mo Xuan's gaze snapped to the right.

"It's coming."

A roar exploded through the cavern.

From the shadows leapt a demonic beast — massive and twisted. Its body resembled a panther, but its skin was covered in dark crimson scales. Two jagged horns curved from its skull. Its eyes burned with molten gold.

"Crimson Horned Abyss Panther," Lan Jian muttered.

The beast lunged without hesitation.

Lan Jian reacted instantly, slamming his palm forward.

"Icebound Seal!"

Frost erupted from his hands, freezing the creature mid-air in a block of ice.

Lan Xue moved fluidly beside him.

Her sword flashed once—

The frozen beast shattered into shards.

Ling Yue blinked. "That was fast."

Han Wei smirked. "Let's hope they're all that easy."

As if answering him—

The cavern trembled again.

Dozens of glowing eyes opened in the darkness.

More Abyss Panthers.

Three.

Ten.

Twenty.

They poured from the shadows like a tide.

"Formation!" Lan Jian barked.

The battle erupted instantly.

Ling Yue stepped forward, Frost Whisper gleaming.

"Frost Veil — Crescent Cut!"

Her blade traced silver arcs through the air, severing two demons at once.

Han Wei unleashed golden talismans that exploded on impact.

Lan Xue moved like a winter gale, her sword slicing cleanly through scaled flesh.

Mo Xuan used only the standard sect sword in his hand.

Simple movements.

Efficient.

Each strike precise.

Each kill economical.

They cut through wave after wave.

But the numbers did not end.

Even as bodies fell, more replaced them.

Then—

Everything went silent.

The smaller demons retreated into the shadows.

The air grew suffocating.

A presence descended.

Even Lan Jian stiffened.

From the depths of the cavern emerged something far larger.

It stood nearly three times the size of the others.

Its body was armored in obsidian-black scales. Four jagged horns crowned its head. A third eye opened slowly on its forehead, radiating crimson light.

"Core Formation… peak…" Lan Xue whispered.

Lan Jian's voice was tense. "No. It's already half-step into the next realm."

The beast roared.

The cavern ceiling cracked.

Rocks fell.

The pressure alone forced them back several steps.

Han Wei gritted his teeth. "Together!"

They attacked simultaneously.

Ice techniques collided with demonic flames.

Ling Yue's blade struck the creature's flank—

Only to bounce off.

Mo Xuan dashed forward, targeting the joints beneath its scales—

The blade scraped.

No penetration.

The demon moved faster than its size suggested.

Its claw swung.

Lan Jian barely blocked—

He was sent flying into a stone pillar.

Blood splattered the wall.

Lan Xue unleashed her strongest strike, a spiraling frost dragon—

It shattered upon impact.

The demon's tail whipped sideways.

Han Wei crashed against the cavern wall, coughing blood.

Ling Yue attempted to retreat—

The demon vanished.

It reappeared before her instantly.

Its claw descended.

Too fast.

Too close.

Before it could strike—

Mo Xuan stepped in front of her.

The claw struck his crossed blade.

The impact detonated like thunder.

Both were thrown backward violently.

They slammed into stone.

Ling Yue coughed blood, her vision blurring.

Mo Xuan felt ribs crack beneath the pressure.

The demon advanced.

Lan Jian and Lan Xue forced themselves upright.

"Final combination!" Lan Jian shouted.

They merged their spiritual power.

Twin pillars of icy light shot forward.

The cavern exploded with force.

For a moment—

The demon staggered.

But it did not fall.

Instead—

It roared in fury.

The ground beneath them shattered.

Cracks spiderwebbed across the cavern floor.

Then—

The entire ground collapsed.

All five cultivators fell.

Mo Xuan reached for Ling Yue.

Their fingers brushed—

Missed.

They plunged into darkness.

The demon remained above, watching from the broken edge.

It did not follow.

The mountain swallowed the fallen.

Silence.

Deep beneath the mountain—

The five lay unconscious.

Separated.

Mo Xuan's body landed against cold stone.

Elsewhere—

Lan Xue lay beside him.

In another fractured chamber—

Ling Yue, Lan Jian, and Han Wei lay scattered.

Blood stained the rocks.

Their breaths faint.

Above—

A figure stood on the mountain peak.

Clad in black robes.

Face hidden beneath a dark veil.

Two subordinates knelt before him.

"Master," one said carefully. "The barrier in Stoneveil Hollow has been destroyed."

The man's aura flared violently.

"Destroyed?"

"Yes. By cultivators. Their robes matched Heavenly Radiance Sect… and Ice Star Sect."

Silence.

Then—

A chilling laugh.

"So they interfere with my work."

His voice was calm.

But murderous.

"The Life-Devouring Tree has fallen. My statue shattered. And now… they trespass in my mountain."

He turned slightly.

"Finish what they started."

The subordinates lowered their heads.

"At once."

Below—

Deep within fractured stone chambers—

The unconscious cultivators began to stir.

Separated.

Injured.

Alone.

And the true depths of the mountain still awaited them.
