Chapter 57 - Second Trial

The giant guardian moved.

The ground shattered beneath its first step.

Five meters of enchanted stone and ancient runes towered above them, its four arms lifting massive weapons that hummed with golden energy.

Zael stepped forward.

Lightning gathered along the edge of his blade.

"Same plan," he said calmly.

Zane grinned.

"Break the last pillar."

Lily nodded once.

"I'll need a clear path."

The guardian swung first.

Its hammer came crashing down toward Zael like a falling mountain.

BOOOOOOM!

The chamber floor exploded.

Dust filled the air.

But Zael was already gone.

Lightning flickered.

He reappeared beside the guardian's leg and slashed.

CLANG!

The strike left a deep crack across the enchanted stone.

But the construct barely reacted.

Instead, its spear arm stabbed downward toward him.

Zael vanished again.

Lightning flashed across the chamber.

The spear shattered the floor where he had stood.

Zane charged in from the side.

"Hey ugly!"

His spear ignited with crimson mana.

He jumped.

The thrust slammed directly into the guardian's knee joint.

CRACK!

The giant construct staggered slightly.

"Ha!"

Zane landed and spun the spear again.

"You're not that tough!"

The guardian answered by swinging two swords at once.

Zane barely blocked the first strike.

The second sent him skidding twenty feet across the stone floor.

"Okay!"

He coughed.

"That one hurt!"

Behind the battle—

Lily was already moving.

She slipped along the edge of the chamber, her spatial sense expanding outward again.

The final pillar stood across the arena.

Golden runes spiraled up its surface, glowing far brighter than the others had.

The formation was focusing all its remaining power into this one anchor.

Which meant destroying it wouldn't be easy.

Lily placed her hand lightly against the stone.

Her eyes closed.

Space rippled around her fingers.

The pillar's mana network appeared clearly inside her mind.

Thousands of threads feeding into a single core.

Reinforced.

Layered.

Protected.

She frowned.

"This one's stubborn."

Across the chamber—

Zael and Zane were now both fighting the giant guardian.

Lightning flashed.

Steel collided with enchanted stone.

Zane lunged again.

This time the guardian caught his spear with one of its massive hands.

"…Uh oh."

The hammer arm swung toward him.

Before it could land—

A bolt of lightning cut across the chamber.

Zael's blade struck the guardian's wrist.

CRACK!

The hand released Zane's spear.

Zane rolled away just as the hammer smashed into the ground.

"Thanks!"

Zael didn't answer.

He was already attacking again.

His sword moved like lightning itself.

Strike after strike landed across the guardian's torso.

Each blow carved deeper cracks through its stone armor.

But the construct still stood.

And worse—

The pillar behind them glowed even brighter.

Feeding it more power.

Zane wiped dust from his face.

"Lily!"

"How's it going?!"

Across the chamber Lily opened her eyes.

"…I can break it."

Zane grinned.

"Then break it!"

"…But I need ten seconds."

Both boys paused.

Zane blinked.

"Ten?"

Zael's expression didn't change.

He simply stepped forward again.

"We'll give you fifteen."

The giant guardian roared.

All four weapons rose at once.

The battle exploded again.

Lightning flashed across the chamber.

Zane's spear burned with crimson energy.

They attacked from opposite sides, forcing the guardian to turn constantly.

Each strike shattered more of its stone armor.

But it kept fighting.

Relentless.

Unstoppable.

Behind them—

Lily stood still before the pillar.

Her hands pressed against the stone.

Mana gathered around her like invisible tides.

Space twisted slowly.

Compressing.

Folding.

Crushing inward.

But the pillar resisted.

Ancient runes flared brighter.

The formation pushed back.

Lily's eyes sharpened.

"Five seconds."

Across the chamber—

The guardian suddenly caught Zael's blade with one hand.

Its hammer arm rose high.

Zane shouted.

"MOVE!"

Zael twisted.

Lightning exploded from his body.

He ripped the blade free just as the hammer crashed down.

The impact shattered half the chamber floor.

Stone debris rained everywhere.

Zane dashed forward again.

He leapt high.

His spear burned brighter than before.

"HEY!"

The thrust struck directly into the guardian's chest crack.

BOOOOM!

The spear punched deep into its torso.

The guardian staggered backward.

Behind them—

Lily whispered quietly.

"Three seconds."

The pillar trembled violently.

Space collapsed inward harder than before.

Invisible pressure squeezed the ancient stone from every direction.

Cracks began spreading up the pillar.

Across the arena—

The guardian turned toward her.

It realized the threat.

All four weapons rose.

Zael stepped in front of it.

Lightning erupted.

"Too late."

His blade flashed.

A massive arc of lightning carved across the guardian's legs.

CRACK!

The construct dropped to one knee.

Zane pulled his spear free and spun it again.

"One second!"

Lily exhaled.

"Now."

Her spatial compression reached its absolute limit.

And the pillar—

SHATTERED.

Stone exploded outward.

The final anchor collapsed.

Across the chamber—

The glowing formation vanished instantly.

The giant guardian froze mid-motion.

Cracks raced across its entire body.

Golden light leaked from every fracture.

Zane blinked.

"…Oh."

Then the five-meter construct collapsed into rubble.

The chamber fell silent.

Dust slowly settled through the air.

For a moment—

None of them moved.

Then Zane dropped onto the floor laughing.

"We… actually did it."

Zael lowered his sword slowly.

The lightning around him faded.

Lily stepped away from the broken pillar.

But something new was happening.

The center of the chamber was glowing again.

A circle of ancient runes appeared where the guardian had stood.

And within that circle—

Three objects slowly rose from the ground.

An ancient sword.

A crimson crystal.

And a silver ring covered in spatial runes.

Zane sat up immediately.

"Oh."

His eyes widened.

"…Inheritance rewards."

Zael stared at the sword.

Lily stared at the ring.

The ancient trial had acknowledged them.

Quickly they tucked them away for reviewing later.

Dust slowly settled over the shattered stone remains of the guardian. The glowing formation had completely disappeared, leaving only the circular platform in the center of the room.

At its heart, ancient runes slowly rotated.

Zael, Lily, and Zane approached cautiously.

The moment they stepped onto the platform—

The runes flared.

Golden light spread across the chamber walls, revealing inscriptions that had been hidden before. Lines of ancient script spiraled across the stone like living veins.

Then a voice echoed through the room.

Ancient. Calm. Powerful.

"Trial of the Threefold Path has been activated."

The three of them exchanged looks.

The voice continued.

"Stage One: Unity Trial. Cleared."

Golden symbols briefly appeared in the air above them.

Then the voice spoke again.

"Participants may proceed to Stage Two: The Trial of Craft and Mind."

Zane scratched the back of his head.

"…Craft?"

Zael simply stepped forward.

"We didn't come this far to stop."

Lily studied the runes carefully.

"This trial isn't purely combat-based," she said. "The patterns suggest multiple disciplines."

The glowing circle in the center split into three smaller rings.

Each ring pulsed with soft light.

The ancient voice returned.

"Stage Two will test knowledge, control, and comprehension."

"Each participant will face a separate trial."

"Success grants inheritance of a specialized profession skill."

Zane blinked.

"Wait."

"Separate?"

Before anyone could respond—

The rings activated.

Light surged upward.

And in the next instant—

The three of them vanished.

The moment the glowing rings activated, the world shattered into light.

Zael, Zane, and Lily vanished from the inheritance chamber.

Stage Two had begun.

---

Zael landed silently on stone.

The chamber around him stretched nearly a hundred meters long, shaped like an ancient training hall. Weapon racks lined the walls, filled with blades, spears, and polearms worn by time.

Every step or sound brought about echoes...

But the most dangerous thing in the room was not the weapons.

It was the figures standing across from him.

Six armored warriors.

Their bodies were carved from stone and metal, runes glowing faintly along their joints. Each one held a different weapon.

Sword.

Spear.

Halberd.

Twin daggers.

Greatsword.

And a long curved blade.

Their eyes ignited the moment Zael moved.

The ancient voice echoed through the hall.

"Understand the weapon."

"Understand its spirit."

The statues moved instantly.

No hesitation.

No warning.

The halberd warrior attacked first.

The weapon screamed through the air toward Zael's neck.

Zael twisted sideways, the blade passing close enough to cut several strands of his hair. At the same time, the dagger user blurred forward with terrifying speed.

Two blades flashed toward his ribs.

Zael stepped back—

The spear stabbed toward his heart.

Clang!

Zael barely caught the shaft with his forearm guard.

The impact forced him backward several steps.

These things were strong.

Very strong.

The voice spoke again.

"Choose."

Across the room, the weapon racks lit up.

Dozens of weapons began glowing with faint mana.

But the guardians weren't going to let him stroll over casually.

The greatsword warrior charged.

The massive blade came down like a falling tower.

BOOM.

Stone cracked under the impact.

Zael rolled sideways and sprinted toward the racks.

The curved blade warrior intercepted him.

Their swords clashed.

CLANG!

The guardian pushed forward relentlessly, forcing Zael back step by step.

Zael's eyes moved quickly across the weapons.

Most radiated unstable energy.

Some even felt hostile.

Then—

One weapon pulsed calmly.

A narrow blade with a balanced structure.

Not flashy.

But perfect.

Zael kicked the guardian away and grabbed the sword.

The moment his hand closed around the hilt—

The guardians froze.

For a single second.

Then they all attacked at once.

The voice echoed.

"Prove you understand."

Zael exhaled slowly.

Lightning flickered across his body.

Then he moved.

His new blade cut through the halberd's shaft.

The dagger user lunged—

Zael twisted and struck.

One strike.

Clean.

Precise.

The statue shattered.

Another guardian fell.

Then another.

Within seconds the hall returned to silence.

Golden light surrounded him.

Trial Cleared.

---

Meanwhile Zane landed in a circular arena surrounded by towering stone pillars.

At first glance, it looked empty.

Then the ground beneath him glowed.

Hundreds of tiny runic circles ignited across the floor.

Targets rose from the ground.

Floating orbs.

Moving plates.

Spinning mechanisms.

The voice echoed.

"Strength without control is chaos."

"Channel power with purpose."

Zane frowned.

"…What?"

Then the first orb fired.

A beam of energy blasted toward his chest.

Zane jumped sideways as the beam scorched the ground behind him.

Another orb fired.

Then three more.

Then ten.

Suddenly the entire arena erupted with attacks.

Energy bolts.

Exploding spheres.

Slicing wind blades.

Zane ducked and rolled through the chaos.

"OKAY THIS IS DEFINITELY TRYING TO KILL ME."

A spear materialized in the center of the arena.

Runes pulsed along its shaft.

Zane grabbed it instinctively.

The moment he touched it—

Information flooded his mind.

The targets had weak points.

Destroying them in the wrong order would cause chain reactions.

He looked up.

Dozens of targets moved through complex patterns.

And the attacks were getting faster.

Zane grinned.

"Alright."

"Now we're talking."

Lightning exploded around him.

He threw the spear.

BOOM.

One target shattered.

But instantly—

Four more fired at him.

Zane rolled under a beam, grabbed the spear as it returned, and launched another strike.

BOOM.

Another target down.

The arena became a storm of attacks.

Pillars shattered.

Stone melted.

Explosions thundered.

Several times Zane nearly got hit directly.

One blast even clipped his shoulder, sending him skidding across the arena floor.

But he kept adapting.

Reading patterns.

Timing strikes.

Finally—

The last target appeared high above the arena.

Protected by rotating shields.

Zane inhaled deeply.

Lightning gathered along the spear.

He jumped.

Then threw it with everything he had.

CRACK.

The spear pierced through the rotating barriers and shattered the final core.

The entire arena exploded with golden light.

Trial Cleared.

Zane collapsed onto his back laughing.

"…That was awesome."

---

Lily's Trial — The Fractured Space Labyrinth

Lily appeared inside a dark chamber filled with floating crystals.

But something was wrong.

Space itself felt unstable.

Cracks ran through the air like shattered glass.

Small objects floated, frozen mid-motion.

A stone chunk slowly rotated in place beside her.

Then suddenly—

A spatial fracture snapped open nearby.

The stone chunk vanished instantly.

Lily's eyes widened.

"Spatial collapse…"

The voice echoed.

"Space is not movement."

"Space is structure."

Ahead of her floated a massive shattered formation.

Hundreds of broken fragments spun slowly through the air.

But the fragments weren't stable.

Some were slowly drifting toward spatial tears.

Others warped the space around them.

If she placed the fragments wrong—

The entire structure would collapse.

And she was standing right in the middle of it.

She stepped forward carefully.

The first fragment slid into place.

The structure stabilized slightly.

But the chamber suddenly shook.

A spatial tear opened behind her.

Lily barely teleported sideways before it swallowed the space she'd been standing in.

Her breathing quickened.

"This trial…"

"…is trying to erase me."

She kept working.

One fragment.

Then another.

The structure grew slowly.

But every time she placed a piece wrong—

Space distorted violently.

Several times the formation exploded apart completely.

Each failure created more spatial fractures around the room.

By the halfway point—

Half the chamber had collapsed into dangerous distortions.

One wrong step could erase a limb.

Or worse.

Lily wiped sweat from her forehead.

"I can't rush…"

Her spatial perception stretched to its absolute limit.

She began seeing the structure in multiple layers.

Dimensions folding within dimensions.

Gradually—

The pattern revealed itself.

The final fragment floated near the largest spatial tear.

Lily teleported forward, grabbed it—

And placed it into the formation.

For one terrifying second—

The entire structure trembled.

Then stabilized.

The spatial fractures sealed instantly.

The chamber filled with golden light.

Lily collapsed to one knee breathing heavily.

Trial Cleared.

---

Moments later—

All three reappeared in the inheritance chamber.

The ancient voice echoed through the hall once more.

"Stage Two: Cleared."

Three glowing runes appeared before them.

Their rewards.

But before they could examine them—

The chamber shifted again.

A third glowing ring formed.

Far brighter than the others.

The voice spoke again.

"Stage Three: Path Ascension."

"Participants may challenge the final trial individually."

"Success grants access to a hidden class."

The inheritance trial wasn't over yet.
