Chapter 74 - Brothers blood

The moment Kael moved—

The platform cracked.

Not from impact.

From pressure.

He didn't rush.

Didn't explode forward like before.

This time—

He spoke.

A single word.

Low.

Ancient.

Unfamiliar.

Yet the moment it left his lips—

The air distorted.

"Dracarys."

A wave of golden-red fire erupted from nothing.

It didn't travel—

It manifested.

Right in front of Zael.

BOOM!

Zael's eyes sharpened—

Too close.

Too sudden.

He raised his blade instinctively—

But the explosion swallowed him whole.

The shockwave blasted across the platform.

Heat surged outward.

Students in the front line flinched.

Some even stepped back.

"Damn…"

"He's not holding back…"

Through the flames—

A figure slid backward.

Zael.

His boots dragged across the platform, carving deep lines into the stone.

Smoke rose faintly from his clothes.

His breathing remained steady—

But his eyes—

Sharper than before.

Kael frowned slightly.

"…You're still standing."

He hadn't expected that.

Not after a direct dragon-language cast.

Zael didn't respond.

But inside—

Everything was moving.

---

Adaptive Evolution activated

• Exposure detected: Dragon Flame (High-tier)

• Resistance acquired: Level 1 (2%)

---

The heat—

Still intense.

Still dangerous.

But no longer overwhelming.

Zael stepped forward.

Slowly.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…You're enduring."

Not a guess.

A conclusion.

He raised his hand again.

This time—

Two words.

Faster.

Sharper.

"Ignis—Virex."

The air screamed.

Fire compressed into spears—

Dozens of them—

All locking onto Zael.

Then—

They launched.

At once.

From every angle.

Zael moved.

Not blindly.

Not randomly.

Prime Predator Instinct.

The world shifted.

Every trajectory—

Every incoming angle—

Every lethal point—

Became clear.

He stepped left.

Twisted.

Duck—

One spear grazed past his shoulder.

Another—

He deflected.

CLANG!

The impact shook his arm.

Heavy.

Far heavier than normal magic.

Dragon language… enhances the output.

Another spear—

Too fast.

Too close—

Zael raised his arm—

Titan Sovereign Core activated

BOOM!

The spear exploded against him.

The impact sent him skidding backward again.

Dust rose.

His arm trembled slightly.

But it held.

Adaptive Evolution progress

• Dragon Flame Resistance: Level 2 (5%)

---

Kael's expression changed.

Not shock.

Not yet.

But—

Interest.

"…You're enduring it."

Zael exhaled slowly.

His body ached.

Even with Titan Sovereign Core—

Even with adaptation—

The attacks were heavy.

Relentless.

And worst of all—

He couldn't get close.

Every time he stepped in—

Kael simply spoke.

And destruction followed.

No casting time.

No delay.

Just—

Execution.

Zael stepped forward again.

Faster this time.

Void Step.

He vanished—

And reappeared within striking distance.

His blade moved instantly.

Night Sever—

Kael's eyes flickered.

Then—

"Aegis."

Golden light wrapped around him.

The slash landed—

CRASH!

The barrier cracked—

But held.

Zael's eyes narrowed.

Not enough.

Kael raised his hand—

Point-blank.

"Ignis."

BOOM!

Zael was blasted backward again.

This time—

Harder.

He hit the ground and slid several meters before stopping.

The crowd stirred.

"…He can't get close."

"That's a Dragon Mage for you…"

"Complete dominance."

But—

Kael wasn't smiling.

He was watching.

Closely.

Because something wasn't right.

Zael stood again.

Burn marks—

Fading.

Breathing—

Controlled.

And most importantly—

Moving better than before.

Adaptive Evolution progress

• Dragon Flame Resistance: Level 3 (9%)

---

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…You're surprisingly still standing."

Zael said nothing.

But inside—

He was calculating.

Every exchange.

Every failure.

Every gap.

I need speed.

His current kit—

Wasn't enough.

Defense—

Holding.

Senses—

Sharp.

But mobility—

Not sufficient.

He couldn't break through.

Another attack came.

Faster.

Heavier.

"Virex Ignis."

A compressed beam of fire tore through the air.

Zael twisted—

Barely avoiding a direct hit.

The heat grazed his side.

Pain flared—

But—

Adaptive Evolution progress

• Dragon Flame Resistance: Level 4 (13%)

---

He didn't slow down.

Didn't hesitate.

He stepped forward again.

Again.

And again.

Each time—

Closer.

Each time—

Better.

But still—

Not enough.

Kael watched him approach.

Step by step.

And for the first time—

His expression turned serious.

"…You're not breaking."

Zael's grip on his sword tightened.

Not yet.

Another step.

Another dodge.

Another near miss.

His body was adapting.

His mind was sharpening.

His instincts were evolving.

But Kael—

Was still in control.

Completely.

And as another dragon-word formed on Kael's lips—

Zael realized something.

If this continued—

He would lose.

Not because he was weaker.

But because—

He couldn't reach him.

And as that thought settled—

A dangerous calm entered his eyes.

Because now—

He wasn't just fighting.

He was searching.

For a way—

To break the impossible.

------

The platform roared.

Not with sound—

But with force.

Another dragon word fell from Kael's lips.

"Virex Ignis."

The beam tore forward.

Zael twisted—

Too slow.

BOOM!

The attack clipped his side and sent him crashing across the platform.

Stone shattered beneath him.

Dust rose.

Silence followed for half a breath—

Then—

He stood again.

Slowly.

Unsteadily.

But standing.

Adaptive Evolution progress

• Dragon Flame Resistance: Level 5 (18%)

• Further increase halted — insufficient intensity for adaptation

Kael watched him.

Eyes narrowed slightly.

Not mockery.

Observation.

Zael said nothing.

But he understood.

The flames that once overwhelmed him—

Were now something his body could endure.

But Kael—

Hadn't increased the output.

Didn't need to.

Because even at this level—

Zael still couldn't break through.

Zael moved again.

Void Step.

He vanished—

Reappeared within striking range.

Night Sever—

"Aegis."

CRASH!

The blade struck the barrier—

Fractures spread—

But didn't break.

Kael didn't even move.

"Still not enough."

A flick of his hand—

"Ignis."

BOOM!

Zael was thrown back again.

His body slammed into the ground.

This time—

He didn't rise immediately.

At the edge of the platform—

Lily's fingers trembled.

"…Stop…"

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Her eyes were fixed on Zael.

On the burns.

On the way his body was starting to give in.

"This isn't a spar anymore…"

Her throat tightened.

"…He's going to get seriously hurt."

Beside her—

Zane stood still.

Too still.

His fists were clenched so tightly—

His knuckles had turned white.

His usual grin—

Gone.

Replaced by something darker.

"…Damn it…"

His voice was low.

Barely restrained.

"I was created for this."

His jaw tightened.

"To fight. To protect him. To take the hits he shouldn't have to take."

Another explosion echoed on the platform.

Zael was forced back again.

Zane's eyes darkened.

"And yet here I am…"

Watching.

Doing nothing.

"…Because I'm too weak."

His fist trembled.

"…Pathetic."

On the platform—

Zael pushed himself up again.

Slow.

Controlled.

His clothes were scorched in multiple places.

His breathing—

Heavier now.

But his eyes—

Still clear.

Still focused.

Kael exhaled slowly.

Then shook his head.

"…This is pointless."

He stepped forward.

Each step—

Heavy.

Dominating.

"You can't reach me."

Another step.

"You can't break my defense."

Another.

"And you can't endure this forever."

He stopped a few meters away.

His gaze locked onto Zael.

"Give up."

Silence fell.

The crowd watched.

Some with pity.

Some with excitement.

Some—

Already convinced.

Kael's voice lowered.

"…You've proven your point."

A pause.

Then—

"Now stop embarrassing yourself."

Zael stood there.

Still.

Quiet.

The words—

Registered.

But didn't settle.

Because in his mind—

Something else was happening.

Every failed approach.

Every blocked strike.

Every forced retreat.

They weren't wasted.

They were being… recorded.

Analyzed.

Refined.

He adjusted his grip slightly.

Subtle.

Almost unnoticeable.

His stance shifted.

A fraction.

Barely visible.

But—

Different.

Kael noticed.

"…Still not giving up?"

Zael finally spoke.

Calm.

Even.

"You're right."

A pause.

"I can't reach you."

The crowd stirred slightly.

Zane frowned.

"…Boss?"

Kael tilted his head.

"Then what exactly are you doing?"

Zael's gaze lifted.

Sharp.

Focused.

"Learning."

A brief silence followed.

Then—

Zael moved again.

This time—

Faster.

Cleaner.

Void Step.

Reappear—

Night Sever—

The timing—

Different.

The angle—

Sharper.

Kael's eyes flickered.

"Aegis."

CRACK!

The barrier shattered.

For the first time—

A clean break.

The blade continued forward—

Kael twisted—

The strike grazed his shoulder.

A thin line of blood appeared.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Kael stepped back.

Slowly.

His hand touched the cut.

Then he looked at it.

Then—

At Zael.

Something changed in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Something colder.

More focused.

"…So that's it."

The air around him shifted.

He straightened.

His aura deepened.

"He wasn't trying to win."

A faint, dangerous smile formed.

"…He was adapting."

Behind him—

The Starfire Squad stopped whispering.

At the edge—

Zane's eyes widened.

"…He broke through?"

Lily's breath caught.

"No…"

Her gaze sharpened.

"…He's still not strong enough."

On the platform—

Zael stood still.

His body burned.

His energy strained.

His breathing heavier than before.

But his stance—

Now perfect.

Because he had finally found it.

Not victory.

Not yet.

But—

A path.

And as Kael slowly raised his hand again—

The pressure in the air doubled.

Because now—

This was no longer a one-sided battle.

And Kael—

Was finally going to take it seriously.
