Chapter 93 - Separation

Chapter: First Layer — Pressure Build

Time lost meaning in the Abyss.

There was no sun.

No sky.

No clear passage of hours.

Only movement.

Only battle.

And the slow, suffocating pressure that seemed to grow with every step forward.

Still—

Zael could tell.

It had been hours.

Hours of intermittent fights.

Small packs.

Lone predators.

Ambushes from the fog.

Nothing overwhelming—

But never stopping.

And somewhere along the way—

He had crossed the threshold.

[LEVEL UP!]

Level 27 → 28

The moment it happened, the change was immediate.

Not explosive.

But undeniable.

His body felt lighter.

Sharper.

The strain from earlier battles dulled slightly, replaced by a renewed steadiness that settled deep into his muscles.

Zael exhaled slowly as they moved across a jagged stretch of dark terrain.

"…I leveled up."

Auralis glanced at him briefly.

"Took you long enough."

Zael ignored her.

Instead, his focus shifted inward.

A small increase.

But not insignificant.

Every level now demanded more.

Every gain was harder earned.

And yet—

The enemies here…

They were worth more.

Zael's gaze sharpened slightly.

"…At this rate, I'll grow faster here than outside."

"Of course you will," Aurelia said calmly.

Zael looked at her.

"…You say that like it's obvious."

"It is."

She didn't slow down as she walked.

"The Abyss isn't just dangerous."

A pause.

"It's dense."

Zael frowned slightly.

"…Dense?"

Auralis answered this time, stretching her arms lazily.

"Energy. Essence. Whatever you want to call it."

She tapped her hammer lightly against her shoulder.

"There's more of it here."

Aurelia continued without looking back.

"Which means everything grows faster."

"Beasts."

Auralis smirked.

"And you."

Zael didn't respond immediately.

But he understood.

That explained the wolves.

The coordination.

The abnormal behavior for a "first layer."

They weren't just stronger.

They were evolving faster.

Which meant—

So was he.

Zael's fingers tightened slightly.

"…Then staying alive becomes the real problem."

Auralis grinned.

"Now you're getting it."

They continued walking.

The terrain had shifted again.

Less open ground.

More jagged formations.

Sharp ridges of black stone rising like broken teeth from the earth.

And the fog—

Thicker now.

Heavier.

Zael's instincts tightened immediately.

"…Something's coming."

Aurelia stopped.

For the first time in hours—

She didn't move forward.

Her staff lifted slightly.

Not in preparation.

In recognition.

Auralis's expression shifted too.

The casual smirk faded—just slightly.

"…Yeah," she muttered.

"This one's different."

The air changed.

Not violently.

But noticeably.

The pressure deepened.

Like something had entered their range—

Something that didn't belong to the same category as everything they had faced so far.

Zael's heartbeat slowed.

Not from calm—

From focus.

His hand shifted toward his weapon.

"…Tier two?"

Aurelia didn't answer immediately.

Her eyes remained fixed ahead.

Through the fog.

"…No."

A pause.

"…Stronger."

Auralis let out a quiet breath.

Then smiled.

Not playful this time.

Sharp.

"…Finally."

The fog ahead split.

Not by wind.

Not by movement.

But by presence.

Something stepped through it—

Slowly.

Deliberately.

And the moment Zael saw it—

His instincts screamed.

Not warning.

Not caution.

Something deeper.

Something older.

Danger.

Real danger.

Zael's grip tightened.

"…So this is where it changes."

No one answered.

Because they all felt it.

This wasn't another hunt.

This—

Was a fight they couldn't afford to misjudge.

And the Abyss—

Was finally starting to show its teeth.

The thing that stepped out of the fog didn't rush them.

It didn't need to.

Its presence alone was enough to distort the air.

Zael felt it immediately—pressure pressing down on his senses, heavier than anything he had encountered since entering the Abyss.

Not just strength.

Control.

Refined.

Dangerous.

Auralis's grip tightened around her hammer.

"…Yeah. That's not normal."

Aurelia didn't respond.

For the first time since Zael had met her—

She looked uncertain.

Her staff lifted slightly.

Her gaze fixed forward, as if trying to read something that refused to be read.

"…I can't see it," she said quietly.

Zael's eyes narrowed.

"…What?"

Aurelia's voice dropped so only Auralis could hear.

"…Its future path. It's… blank."

That alone was wrong.

Everything moved.

Everything followed a path—even if it branched.

But this—

Was hidden.

Not naturally.

Suppressed.

Auralis exhaled slowly.

"…So either it's stronger than you…"

A pause.

"…or something stronger is hiding it."

Silence.

That was worse.

Zael didn't hesitate anymore.

"Then we don't wait."

He moved first.

Void Step activated instantly—his figure blurring forward as he closed the distance in a single motion.

"Night Sever."

A clean strike aimed at its center mass.

The attack landed.

But—

Nothing.

No reaction.

No stagger.

The blade of force passed through its form—only to disperse like it had struck something far denser than expected.

Zael's pupils shrank.

"…What?"

The creature moved.

Not fast.

Not sudden.

Just—

Enough.

Its arm shifted.

Zael's instincts screamed.

He forced his body sideways—barely—

The counterstrike grazed him.

And that alone—

Was enough.

Pain tore through his side as he was thrown back, skidding across the ground before barely catching himself.

Not deep.

But not light either.

Auralis moved instantly.

"Move!"

She slammed her hammer downward.

The ground shattered beneath the creature, forcing a disruption in its footing—

But it didn't fall.

It adjusted.

Mid-collapse.

Like gravity didn't apply the same way to it.

Aurelia stepped in next.

Her staff moved again—

That same subtle distortion.

Time—space—something—shifted around the creature.

For a fraction of a second—

It slowed.

That was the only opening they got.

Zael forced himself up despite the pain.

"…Again!"

He moved with Auralis this time.

Coordinated.

She struck high—

He cut low.

A pincer attack.

Clean.

Precise.

The kind that should have forced a reaction.

But the creature didn't defend.

It didn't need to.

Its body shifted slightly—

And both attacks missed critical zones by a margin so small it felt deliberate.

Not luck.

Not instinct.

Prediction.

Auralis clicked her tongue.

"…It's reading us."

Aurelia's voice came sharper this time.

"No—"

A pause.

"…It's being guided."

That changed everything.

Zael's breath tightened.

"…Then we're not fighting just it."

The creature moved again.

This time—faster.

Auralis barely brought her hammer up in time.

The impact exploded outward.

She held her ground—

But the force pushed her back several steps, cracks forming beneath her feet.

"…Tch—!"

Zael stepped in again—

Too soon.

Too aggressive.

The creature's counter came instantly.

He twisted—

Not enough.

The strike caught his shoulder this time, tearing through his guard and sending him crashing into the ground.

His vision blurred for half a second.

Pain flared.

Not crippling—

But real.

Aurelia's voice cut through sharply.

"Stop."

Zael froze.

Not from fear—

From instinct.

That tone wasn't a suggestion.

It was a decision.

"…We can't win this."

Auralis didn't argue this time.

Her expression had shifted completely.

Serious.

Focused.

"…Yeah."

Zael clenched his jaw.

"…Then we run?"

Aurelia nodded.

"Now."

No hesitation.

No pride.

Just survival.

Auralis stepped forward one last time.

Hammer slammed into the ground.

A shockwave burst outward—violent enough to disrupt the creature's advance for a split second.

That was all they needed.

Zael forced his body to move.

Void Step.

Again.

And again.

They retreated fast.

Not clean.

Not coordinated like before.

Just—fast enough to stay alive.

The creature followed.

Not rushing.

Not chasing recklessly.

Just keeping pressure.

Like it knew exactly how far to push.

Zael felt it behind them.

Constant.

Unrelenting.

Aurelia moved ahead, guiding their path through the terrain—cutting through narrow ridges and uneven ground.

Auralis stayed near the rear, intercepting when needed.

Zael kept pace between them.

Until—

Something shifted.

The terrain changed abruptly.

A split.

Sharp.

Unstable.

A ridge collapsed beneath his step.

Zael reacted instantly—

But the ground gave way faster than expected.

"…Zael!"

Auralis's voice snapped—

Too late.

The world tilted.

Stone broke beneath him.

And the path split completely.

Zael fell.

Not far—

But enough.

By the time he stabilized and pushed himself back up—

The fog had already closed in.

Thick.

Heavy.

Cutting off everything.

"…Aurelia!"

No response.

"…Auralis!"

Nothing.

Silence.

Zael stood there for a moment.

Breathing steady despite the situation.

Despite the injury.

His eyes sharpened slowly.

"…Great."

Alone.

In the Abyss.

With something out there—

Strong enough to bypass Aurelia's foresight.

And possibly—

Still watching him.

Zael exhaled once.

Then straightened.

"…Guess I move alone."

But even as he said it—

The feeling didn't leave.

That presence.

Faint now.

Distant.

But still there.

And this time—

It wasn't just observing.

It was interested.
