Chapter 129 - The watchers key reacts again

The forest didn't stay quiet for long.

Once the four of them started moving—

It shifted.

Subtly.

Like it recognized them.

Or maybe—

Like it was reacting to what they were about to do.

Zael took point without saying it.

Not because he had to.

Just because it made sense.

Auralis drifted slightly to the right, loose but ready, her steps light despite the terrain.

Aurelia stayed just behind Zael, her eyes no longer glowing constantly—but her focus hadn't dropped.

Zane remained at the back.

Silent.

Watching everything.

The formation settled naturally.

No discussion needed.

For a while—

They moved without speaking.

Tracking.

Following the faint traces left behind.

Then—

Aurelia broke the silence.

"…I found a way out."

Zael didn't stop walking.

But his attention shifted.

"…Yeah?"

Auralis perked up immediately.

"…Wait—seriously?"

Zane's gaze flicked forward.

Listening.

Aurelia nodded slightly as she walked.

"…Based on the terrain shifts and energy convergence patterns."

Zael glanced at her briefly.

"…That sounds like you're about to say something complicated."

Auralis grinned.

"…Translation please."

Aurelia didn't react.

Just continued calmly.

"…There's a focal point in this region. Everything—energy, movement, even the blood mist density—subtly converges toward one location."

Zael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…A center."

"…Yes."

Aurelia nodded.

"…A peak."

Auralis blinked.

"…Wait—like a literal mountain?"

Aurelia answered simply.

"…Blood Peak."

That name settled into the air differently.

Heavier.

More real.

Zael looked ahead.

"…And you think there's an exit there."

"…Not think."

Aurelia's voice stayed calm.

"…There should be a portal at the summit."

Auralis let out a low whistle.

"…Of course there is."

Then she smirked slightly.

"…Let me guess—it's not going to be easy getting there."

Zael gave a quiet huff.

"…When has anything been easy here?"

Aurelia continued.

"…The concentration of abyssal energy increases the closer you get. That means stronger entities. Higher density zones. Possibly territorial conflicts."

Zane added quietly from behind—

"…And attention."

Zael nodded slightly.

"…Makes sense."

Auralis stretched her arms as she walked.

"…Good. I was starting to think we'd just wander forever."

Zael glanced at her.

"…You say that like you weren't enjoying it."

She grinned.

"…I mean—I wasn't not enjoying it."

Aurelia ignored that completely.

"…There's more."

Zael looked at her again.

"…Of course there is."

"…The ones we're tracking—"

She paused slightly.

"…They're heading in the same direction."

Zael's steps didn't slow.

But something in his expression sharpened.

"…Blood Peak."

"…Yes."

Auralis cracked her knuckles lightly.

"…So we take them out on the way up?"

Zael didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"…No."

That got all three of their attention.

He continued calmly.

"…We don't rush it."

Auralis frowned slightly.

"…Why not?"

Zael's gaze stayed forward.

"…Because if they're heading there too—"

A small pause.

"…They already know something we don't."

Zane's voice came quietly.

"…Or they're being pulled there."

Zael nodded once.

"…Exactly."

Aurelia added—

"…Which means the peak isn't just an exit point."

Zael finished the thought.

"…It's a convergence point."

Silence settled for a moment.

Then Auralis smiled slowly.

"…Even better."

Zael glanced at her.

"…You're way too excited about this."

She shrugged.

"…Stronger enemies. Bigger fights. I don't see the problem."

Zane's voice remained even.

"…You will."

Auralis snorted lightly.

"…Not before they do."

Zael let out a quiet breath.

"…Focus."

The group tightened slightly.

Formation sharpening.

Intent aligning.

Ahead—

The forest began to change.

The ground sloped upward.

Subtle at first.

Then more noticeable.

The air thickened.

Not oppressive.

But heavier.

Denser.

Zael's eyes narrowed.

"…We're getting closer."

Aurelia nodded.

"…Yes."

Auralis's grin widened.

"…Finally."

Zane said nothing.

But his gaze had sharpened.

Locked forward.

The slope grew steeper.

The forest thinned.

The air—

Changed.

Denser.

Sharper.

Like every breath carried weight now.

Zael's steps didn't slow.

But his focus tightened.

Then—

Something pulsed.

Faint.

But unmistakable.

A flicker of light—

Right in front of him.

Zael stopped.

So did the others.

And then—

It appeared.

The Watcher's Key.

Again.

Floating.

Silent.

Emitting that same strange, steady glow.

Zael stared at it.

"…Again."

Auralis blinked.

"…Wait—what?"

Zane tilted his head slightly, eyes narrowing.

"…Isn't that what those guys were after?"

Zael didn't answer immediately.

His gaze stayed locked on the key.

"…Yeah."

Auralis stepped a little closer, circling it slightly.

"…Why does it keep doing that?"

There was no humor in her voice this time.

Just curiosity.

And a bit of unease.

Aurelia stepped forward slowly.

Her expression—

Had changed.

The calm was still there.

But now—

There was weight behind it.

"…It's not random."

Zael glanced at her.

"…Then what is it?"

Aurelia's eyes fixed on the key.

"…It's resonating."

Silence.

Auralis frowned.

"…With what?"

Aurelia didn't answer immediately.

Her gaze shifted—

Forward.

Upward.

Toward the distant rise where the land continued to climb.

"…Something ahead."

Zael followed her line of sight.

Blood Peak.

Zane spoke quietly.

"…So it's reacting to whatever's up there."

Aurelia nodded once.

"…Yes."

Then her tone shifted slightly.

Lower.

More serious.

"…And if I'm right—"

She paused.

Just for a second.

"…Then this isn't just an exit."

Zael's eyes narrowed.

"…Go on."

Aurelia exhaled slowly.

"…Artifacts like that don't react without cause."

Her gaze returned to the key.

"…Something is calling it."

Auralis crossed her arms.

"…Calling it? Like what?"

Aurelia's voice dropped just a fraction.

"…Something stronger."

A beat.

Then—

"…Something older."

The air felt heavier after that.

Zael looked at the Watcher's Key again.

This time—

More carefully.

Not as a tool.

Not as an item.

But as a signal.

A trigger.

"…So we're not just walking into a fight."

Zane answered calmly.

"…We're walking into a center."

Auralis grinned slowly.

But this time—

Even she felt it.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

Then—

"…I can feel that."

Aurelia's voice came steady.

"…If it's what I think it is—"

She looked at Zael.

Directly.

"…Then things just got a lot bigger."

Zael held her gaze for a moment.

Then looked forward again.

Toward the peak.

The key pulsed once more.

Brighter this time.

Like it was responding.

Confirming.

Waiting.

Zael reached out—

Not touching it.

Just close enough to feel the energy coming off it.

"…Good."

Auralis glanced at him.

"…Good?"

Zael's lips curved slightly.

Not excitement.

Not recklessness.

Just certainty.

"…Means we're going the right way."

Zane's voice followed.

"…Then we don't slow down."

Aurelia nodded.

"…No."

Auralis cracked her knuckles lightly.

"…Wouldn't want to."

Zael lowered his hand.

The key flickered—

And vanished again.

Like it had never been there.

But this time—

No one doubted it.

Something ahead—

Was waiting.

And now—

It knew they were coming.

Zael stepped forward.

The others followed.

The climb continued.

And the closer they got—

The more the world itself seemed to shift around them.

Like they were approaching something—

That wasn't meant to be found easily.

To be continued…
