Chapter 18 - Chapter 17

Eclipse Tournament — Round One

Night settled quietly over the city.

But somewhere behind a closed door, the silence was electric.

A screen glowed in the dim room.

A cursor blinked.

Waiting.

He leaned back in his chair, fingers tapping lightly against the desk. Calm. Controlled. Patient.

Then—

LavenderQuin has logged in.

His lips curved slightly.

Right on time.

The team chat exploded immediately.

BlazeWolf:

SHE'S HERE!!!

Nova:

Finally (╥﹏╥)༼;´༎ຶ ۝ ༎ຶ༽we thought you vanished!

PixelKitten:

Don't scare us like that again!

He watched the messages scroll.

Didn't type yet.

Just observed.

Then finally—

ShadowByte: 2 days

A pause.

Her reply came quickly.

LavenderQuin:

Relax. I didn't die.

His fingers hovered over the keyboard.

ShadowByte:

Felt longer.

He could almost picture her rolling her eyes.

Good.

She was normal.

She sounded normal.

Which meant whatever distracted her last match…

Was still there.

He noticed things like that.

Even when she thought he didn't.

BlazeWolf:

Focus up! Eclipse Tournament Round One starts now!

The Eclipse Tournament.

High stakes.

High visibility.

No room for mistakes.

The match loaded.

Digital battlefield.

Enemy team aggressive from the start.

Too aggressive.

Nova:

Left side push!

PixelKitten:

They're fast!

He didn't move immediately.

He shifted his headset slightly.

Watched her character.

She hadn't moved either.

Good.

She was thinking.

ShadowByte:

What's the play?

A beat.

Then—

LavenderQuin:

Follow me.

There it was.

That quiet authority.

She moved first.

He followed.

Not behind.

Beside.

Enemy appeared—

She eliminated one instantly.

Clean.

Precise.

He intercepted the second before it could flank her.

Third tried to rush—

Too slow.

They moved like they'd practiced this for years.

No wasted motion.

No hesitation.

Except—

For half a second earlier.

He saw it.

The micro-delay.

The almost-mistake.

She corrected it fast.

But he saw.

He always saw.

VICTORY

The screen flashed bright.

Team chat exploded.

BlazeWolf:WHAT WAS THAT?!

Nova:

They didn't stand a chance!

PixelKitten:

ShadowByte + Lavender combo is illegal ಥ‿ಥ

He ignored them.

His focus was elsewhere.

ShadowByte:

You hesitated earlier.

Silence.

Her reply came slower this time.

LavenderQuin:

No I didn't.

He leaned forward slightly.

ShadowByte:

You did.

Pause.

He could imagine her narrowing her eyes.

ShadowByte:

Something distracted you.

Another pause.

Longer.

Then—

LavenderQuin:

You're imagining things.

He smiled faintly.

Maybe.

But probably not.

ShadowByte:

Maybe.

A beat.

Then—

ShadowByte:

Or maybe you're not as untouchable as you pretend to be.

He waited.

There it was.

The spark.

LavenderQuin:

Careful.

Pause.

LavenderQuin:

You're starting to sound interested.

His fingers didn't hesitate this time.

ShadowByte:

Maybe I am.

Silence filled the channel.

He didn't retract it.

Didn't joke.

Didn't soften it.

He meant it.

More than he should.

He stood up from his chair slowly.

ShadowByte:

Round Two won't be this easy.

A pause.

Then—

He logged off.

Leaving her there.

Letting the words sit.

Letting her think.

The room returned to silence.

The glow of the monitor reflected in his eyes.

He replayed the match in his head.

Her movements.

Her pause.

Her voice in chat.

Something was bothering her.

And he didn't like not knowing what.

His phone rested on the desk beside the keyboard.

He picked it up absentmindedly.

Unlocked it.

Stared at a familiar contact name for a second longer than necessary.

Then locked it again.

A slow exhale left him.

(Two worlds.

One girl.

And the lines between them were getting thinner.)

He leaned back, eyes closing briefly.

Round One was won.

But something much more dangerous had just begun.

And he wasn't sure if he was ready for it.
