Chapter 20 - A suitable wife and mother

"I don't know what you're thinking, marrying this woman." He had openly expressed his objection to this marriage, but now that he was no longer the Don, his opinion didn't matter much in this family anymore.

At least that was what he wanted everyone to believe.

However, as long as he was alive and breathing, even if he didn't wield the reins anymore, he would always protect his family in any way he could.

"I was thinking that I need a wife and Caleb needs a mother," Oliver answered him brusquely, while he watched his son's new wife being dragged away from the celebration by his grandson.

"And what makes you think that she will be a suitable wife and mother to Caleb. What do you even know about her?" Questioning his son's decision.

Incredibly Stupid! That was what he thought.

"I understand, Caleb. He is young, naïve. He's a child. But you?" He shook his head, clearly showing his disappointment with his son's chosen path.

"You are the most powerful man in this city, but you are letting this woman fool you." He had handed the most powerful mafia organization to Oliver, believing his son was ready to lead this family into the future.

But now, he wondered if he had made a mistake. At the moment, he believed that his son was acting on impulse, thinking more with his dick rather than his head.

"Dad, you know that I'm only doing this for Caleb and Mom." Oliver pointed out. "You know that Mom would never stop until she saw me married again."

Of course, he was aware that his wife's fingerprints had been imprinted all over this hasty wedding.

"But I'm sure that there is someone out there who is more suitable to be your wife." He countered, believing that Sophia was not the only option.

When he had gotten rid of Amelia, he thought that he had finally put his son in the right direction. It was a shame that Hazel didn't stick around because someone like her was what his son needed to be standing by his side. A successful woman with a great family background.

"You mean someone like Hazel." Oliver sarcastically replied. "No, thanks."

"Sophia might not be wife material, but I know that she's going to be good for Caleb." His son said as if that were enough reason for him to marry her. "Besides, we had already checked her background thoroughly. She's clean."

Honestly, he had seen the report. It said that her parents were killed in a car accident. She had been with the Sinclair Group for the past four years, working hard until she rose in the ranks.

Before that, Sophia had lived in New York. There were no criminal records. She had done nothing that would raise any red flags. Still, he was unimpressed.

"Precisely, her records are too clean. Too perfect." As if someone had written her narrative. "And I don't buy it."

Something was off about that woman. He had an odd feeling that she was not what she pretended to be.

His instincts told him that she was hiding something. And he was rarely wrong.

"Let me assure you that if she has any intention of betraying our family, I will personally put a bullet in her head." Oliver didn't mince his words. "Now, if you have nothing else to say, I'm going to..."

But before his son could finish his sentence, one of their men appeared before them.

"Excuse me, Mr. Morton, but I need to speak with the Don privately." Maddox lowered his head, showing his respect for him as the former Mafia Don.

"What is it?" Oliver asked, permitting his man to speak freely in front of him.

From the look Maddox gave him, he could already tell that it was not good news.

"Don, I just received word that there is a problem with the new shipments of guns. I don't have the complete details yet, but our men are already working on it." Maddox informed him.

Damn!

From what he had heard, that was a million-dollar shipment. One of the biggest illegal gun smuggling cargoes the cartel had been expecting this year.

"Jacob, get the car and meet me outside in five minutes." His son called his second-in-command, knowing he would need all hands on deck.

"But it is your wedding. Let me handle this for you." He could hear Jacob's voice on the line, but his son refused his friend's suggestion.

As the Don, his son had no choice but to attend to the matter personally. Even if this was his wedding, in their world, the job had to come first, especially when millions and their family's reputation were at stake.

"I'll inform your mother about the situation. And I'm sure she would take care of your wife and your son." He told his son.

There was no time to waste. The urgency of the matter required immediate action.

With that said, Oliver grabbed a few things from his private office and then left. In the meantime, he scanned the room to look for his wife.

But as he saw her laughing with some of their friends, his phone suddenly rang. He could not help but crack a smile when he saw the caller's name.

"Fancy hearing from you after all this time." He immediately answered the call while walking outside, where no one would overhear his conversation.

"Why didn't you inform me that he's getting married?" A woman's voice demanded an answer on the other line.

"Why should I, Hazel?" He answered back. "Aren't you the one who left my son and your child?" He had no time for her dramatics.

Admittedly, he had pushed his son to marry her before, but it was different now.

"But I only did it to pursue my career, but I'm ready to be his wife again and be the mother to Caleb," Hazel said. "Would you help me, Max, get my family back?"

"I'm sorry, Hazel, but that's not going to happen." He might have fallen for her act before, but not again. He was grateful that she gave his family an heir, but his family had already paid her in full. They didn't owe her anything. Not anymore.

"But that's my son. You..."

"You already waived your rights to him when you signed custody over to my son." He reminded her.

"But that woman is not suitable to be Oliver's wife." Hazel smugly told him. "She's a nobody."

Actually, she didn't need to remind him of that. But after what Hazel did, he also thought she lost her right to be the next matron of the Morton family.

"You're right about that. But don't worry..." He smiled, with a devilish glint in his eyes. "I already have someone lined up to be his new wife."

Oliver might have married this nobody, but he could also divorce her that easily. He just needed a reason for his son to leave her.

"No! You can't do that to me." Hazel shouted over the phone. "I won't let you discard me just like that."

"Then, prove to me that you deserve to be my son's wife and Caleb's mother again."
