Chapter 20 - Chapter Twenty: The Scorpion’s Sting and the Symphony of Digital Collapse

The crimson glow spilling from the massive holographic screen bathed the walls of Scorpion Tower's grand hall in the color of fresh blood, as though the building itself were bleeding. In a single instant, the classical music dissolving through the air cut off, replaced by a low-frequency hum—an unsettling vibration that made teeth chatter and seeded a primal sense of danger deep in the bones.

The guests—market aristocrats, titans of finance, faces of power—froze where they stood. They were no longer people, but wax figures with glassy, empty eyes. Above us, Arkan's laughing face hovered in the air, enormous and distorted, like an offended god deciding to drop the curtain at the peak of the performance.

[09:59… 09:58… 09:57…]

The red countdown ticked away in the corner of my vision. Every falling second shaved off another fragment of reality's cohesion. The air thickened. Beneath our feet, the glass floor began to fracture in digital seams, as if the code sustaining it were unraveling.

I turned toward Kayan.

He was no longer the cold CEO who weighed people in profits and losses. His black hair was disheveled, his tie loosened, and his golden eyes burned with an unnatural violet shimmer. The mark on his wrist pulsed violently, light piercing through skin as veins rose beneath the surface, his body barely containing the surge of energy flooding through him.

The resonance between us reached its breaking point.

It wasn't attraction.

It was inevitability.

"Lila… focus on me."

His voice didn't tremble, yet it wasn't cold either. It was the voice of a man standing at the edge of an abyss and choosing not to look down. He clasped my hand tightly, and at the moment of contact, dragon mana surged from his body into mine—a scorching wave that stitched the fractures in my memory.

Flashes erupted:

A black throne.

A gray sky.

A kiss beneath a collapsing storm of data.

"The bombs aren't physical," I said, my voice steady despite the chaos. Activating [Secretary's Intuition] and merging it with [Eye of Truth], the façade peeled away. I saw invisible wiring, weak points, layered code.

"They're logic bombs. Arkan doesn't want to destroy the tower. He wants to delete us from the server. Erase us like corrupted files."

[System Notice: Updated Quest — "The Killer's Choice"]

[Objective: Kill Kayan (delete file) to reclaim admin privileges and escape alone.]

[Reward: Return to Seoul 2024 with full memory + 1 billion credits.]

[Penalty if refused: Analog erasure in 9 minutes.]

The offer was tempting.

Life.

Wealth.

Complete memories.

No pain.

No sacrifice.

Isabella's laughter cut through the scene. She stood atop a raised platform, her crimson gown spilling like an ocean of blood, her eyes glittering with mockery.

"Do it, Lila. You're a data analyst, aren't you? Numbers don't lie. Your survival requires his deletion. He's just a narrative obstacle—a hero designed to die."

I looked at Kayan.

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't afraid.

He stared at the system window only I could see, as if reading the quest through the contract binding us.

Without hesitation, he drew a small dagger from his jacket and placed it in my hand. Then—calm beyond reason—he guided the blade toward his heart.

"If that's the price for you to live… then do it."

He smiled. A faint, aching smile.

"I've died thousands of times in Arkan's stories. But this time… I want to die by the hand of the woman who made me feel alive."

My hand trembled.

The dagger was heavy—not in weight, but in meaning.

"No."

My voice was quiet, but absolute.

"Arkan wants us to follow the usual trope. The villainess betrays the hero. Individual sacrifice. Tragic ending. But I… I'm breaking the script."

I forced open [Admin Mode].

Code erupted around me like falling meteors. Data spiraled, cracked, burned.

I began to write—not commands, but something unrecorded in any host manual. I fused modern Seoul logic—algorithms, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence—with ancient Exaros magic: mana, contracts, soul bonds.

Technology and magic.

Reality and fiction.

Love and defiance.

"Command: Override behavioral constraints!"

"Command: Merge Ten-Meter Rule with Self-Destruct Protocol!"

"Execute!"

[Warning! Host initiating reverse encryption!]

[Logic bombs rerouting to source!]

Arkan screamed. Confidence shattered. His holographic face distorted, pixels collapsing, voice fragmenting.

"Lila! Stop!"

I met his gaze directly, violet light blazing from my eyes.

"I'm not running from your ending. I'm rewriting it."

The entire tower convulsed.

Glass fractured.

The red glow inverted into blinding violet.

I seized Kayan by the collar and pulled him close. There was no time for hesitation. I kissed him amid the digital storm, amid collapsing data, beneath a sky tearing itself apart.

In that instant—

Everything detonated.

Not in fire.

But in reset.

Isabella screamed as she dissolved into scattered numbers.

The guests evaporated like archived files.

Scorpion Tower crumbled into golden dust.

[Ding!]

[Achievement Unlocked: Maze Break 01]

[Reward: 50% true memory restored]

[Title Unlocked: Fate Architect]

[Transitioning to Level Three: World of Endless Ash]

Then—

Falling.

We struck solid, frozen ground. My eyes opened slowly. It wasn't Seoul. It wasn't a palace.

White land blanketed in ash stretched endlessly.

A black sky without stars.

On the horizon—colossal server towers piercing the heavens, emitting a hum like the screams of millions of stored souls.

Kayan rose first. His black armor had returned, dusted in ash. He offered his hand and pulled me up.

His golden eyes were no longer cold.

Something deeper lived there.

Obsession.

Possession.

An unspoken vow.

"Evelyn… Lila…" he murmured both names as one, inseparable.

"It doesn't matter where we are. As long as I can hold your hand… I'm king even in this ruin."

I stepped closer. The mark on my wrist glowed gold this time, not violet.

"We're in the digital graveyard," I said softly.

"Failed worlds are discarded here. And Arkan… is hiding in the central tower."

We prepared to walk.

Then—

Footsteps behind us.

We turned.

An entire army of dead Kayan and Evelyn variants. Torn copies, hollow eyes, fractured bodies—remnants of deleted worlds.

At their front—

The original Evelyn.

Her pale beauty exactly as in the first story. Lifeless violet eyes. In her hand, the true Dragon Heart… yet it did not pulse violet.

It was black.

Corrupted.

She smiled—a cold, dead smile.

"You took my body… and my beloved… and thought you were the heroine?"

She stepped forward.

"Lila… in this world, there are no happy endings for outsiders summoned from beyond."

Above Kayan's head—

A timer appeared.

Not ten minutes.

Not one minute.

[00:01 second]

And the world…

began to freeze.
