The moment those words left his mouth—
Karl paused.
His brows furrowed slightly in confusion, as though he hadn't even realized what he had just said.
When he turned to look at Adelyn, her eyes were already fixed on him. And something about her gaze felt ... wrong.
For some reason, it felt like it carried a cold warning.
"Sister-in-law ... what's wrong?" he asked, completely puzzled. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
He glanced around.
It wasn't just Adelyn staring at him.
Everyone else was looking his way as well.
Even Pier was blinking at him as though there was something he simply couldn't comprehend.
A dangerous glint flashed across Adelyn's eyes as she asked quietly, "What did you just say?"
Karl blinked, still completely clueless.
"What did I say?" he repeated. "I just said what was appropriate."
Then, pointing toward Zeke matter-of-factly, he continued,
"Didn't we just win the bet? Shouldn't he fulfill the terms he agreed to? How did I say anything wrong?"
