Chapter 24 - Ningxue awakening

The next day, the air in Bo City felt crisp as I walked toward the bustling food district. True to our word, I met Mo Fan and Zhang Xiaohou at our favorite, neon-lit hotpot spot.

"Brother Yuzi! Over here!" Xiaohou waved enthusiastically, his face already flushed with the anticipation of spicy broth.

To my surprise, the booth was already quite full. Xinxia was there, her wheelchair tucked neatly against the table, looking up at me with that signature shy smile. But sitting across from her, looking slightly out of place in the casual, steamy environment, was Mu Ningxue. She had her usual icy, composed demeanor, though she had clearly been invited by Mo Fan.

"I didn't expect to see you both here," I said, sliding into the seat beside Xinxia.

"Mo Fan insisted on a full group," Xinxia whispered, her fingers nervously twisting her napkin. She glanced briefly at Ningxue, then back at me, her expression softening.

"Don't look at me like that, Yuzi," Mo Fan laughed, tossing a handful of beef into the bubbling pot. "We're all friends, aren't we? Even if Ningxue is usually too busy practicing to join us."

Mu Ningxue shifted slightly, her gaze meeting mine. There was a lingering tension between us that had grown over the last six months—something that went beyond our childhood friendship, yet stayed right on the edge of being unspoken. She didn't say much, but the way she held her chopsticks and watched me felt different than it did with the others.

The conversation flowed with the typical chaos of a meal with Mo Fan and Xiaohou, but I felt the weight of the air between the girls. Xinxia was perceptive; she could tell the dynamic between Ningxue and me had shifted. She ducked her head, trying to hide her blushing face behind her bowl.

"You're acting quiet today, Xinxia," I said softly, leaning closer so only she could hear.

She glanced up, meeting my eyes for a fleeting second before looking away. "It's nothing, Brother Yuzi. I just... I feel like you're changing."

Across the table, Ningxue's eyes drifted toward us. The room felt suddenly very small. I was the monster who had leveled an obsidian pillar the night before, but here, I was just a boy trying to keep his peace. I reached out under the table, my hand briefly brushing Xinxia's, while I felt Ningxue's sharp, observant gaze tracing the interaction.

Mo Fan and Xiaohou were busy arguing over the last slice of mutton, completely oblivious to the subtle currents of the conversation. Two more years until the awakening. Two more years until everything changed. I took a deep breath, letting the spice of the broth and the laughter of my friends ground me. For now, I would just be Yuzi.

.....

A few days after our hotpot dinner, the atmosphere in Bo City felt charged. I was in my room, refining my mana flow, when the door swung open.

My brother Zhu, who returned to Bo City two days ago, walked in with an excited grin. He was usually composed, but today he was clearly impressed.

"Yuzi! You won't believe it," Zhu said, leaning against the doorframe. "Mu Ningxue. She did it—she awakened her magic on her own. No external catalyst, no school ceremony. Just raw, innate talent."

I maintained my composure, though a flicker of interest crossed my mind. The timeline was holding firm. I had expected this, but hearing it confirmed still shifted the board in ways I needed to account for.

"On her own?" I replied, keeping my voice steady. "That's rare, even for the Mu family's standards."

"It is," Zhu agreed, his expression turning serious. "Mu Zhaoyun and I have been talking. They're hosting a private awakening party at the Mu Manor tonight to celebrate her achievement. It's small, but Zhaoyun specifically asked for you to come. He's always held you in high regard, you know that."

I stood up, adjusting my collar. Her early awakening was the catalyst I knew was coming, but now that it was here, the Mu family would tighten their grip on her even faster than I'd anticipated. They would treat her like a prized weapon, accelerating her training to turn her into the "Ice Beauty" sooner than the original lore suggested.

"It's a significant milestone," I said, masking my deeper calculations behind a polite tone. "Zhaoyun is your friend, and Ningxue deserves the recognition. We shouldn't keep them waiting."

"Exactly," Zhu nodded. "Don't let your usual 'studious' routine keep you here. Let's head over."

I walked toward the window, looking out toward the Mu Manor. My knowledge of the future told me exactly how this would go—the Mu family would try to isolate her, to mold her into their ultimate asset. I wasn't going to let that happen, not when I had already spent six months becoming the hidden variable in this city.

"Let's go," I said. As we walked toward the manor, I allowed myself a moment to consider the path ahead. If she was awakened now, she would be under intense scrutiny. I needed to see exactly how much pressure they were putting on her, and more importantly, how she was handling that first surge of power.

As the heavy gates of the Mu Manor opened, the sounds of a high-society celebration drifted out. I stepped into the courtyard, my mask of a "simple student" firmly in place, even as my mind already began to plan for how I would navigate the Mu family's ambitions.

The courtyard of the Mu Manor was illuminated by soft, enchanted lanterns that cast a cold, crystalline glow across the manicured gardens. The elite of Bo City were present, their voices hushed in a mixture of reverence and strategic calculation. They weren't just here to celebrate a girl; they were here to pay homage to the future of the Mu family.

Mu Zhaoyun stood near the entrance, greeting guests with the ease of a man who knew his clan was ascending. When he spotted my brother Zhu and me, his face lit up.

"Zhu! And young Yuzi," Zhaoyun said, clasping my brother's shoulder before turning his sharp, analytical gaze toward me. "I heard you've been keeping to your books lately. A scholar's life is noble, but today is a day for celebrating raw, inherited talent."

"Talent like Ningxue's deserves to be recognized," I replied, maintaining a modest, polite smile.

Zhaoyun chuckled, clearly misinterpreting my reserve for typical teenage shyness. "Go on inside. She's been surrounded by Elders all night, I'm sure she'd appreciate a familiar face."

As I stepped into the grand hall, the temperature dropped significantly. The air felt brittle, charged with a faint, biting frost—the signature of her newly awakened Ice element, there is also something else.....

'that Ice Crystal bow.'
