Chapter 31 - Comfort

ISKERA

The moment Alfred kills the ignition, Vane flies out of the car.

Flies—because that is the only word to describe the blur of speed with which he unlocks his door and vamooses, as if he's running from my questions, from my troubles.

I watch him maintain that same clipped, military pace across the porch, offering nothing but curt nods to the greeting staff before the shadows of the hallway swallow him whole.

I stamp my feet against the floorboards in a burst of silent fury, cussing him, then cussing myself for being such a fool.

So what if I've never seen a more handsome male? So what if I like him? So what if he makes me and my other blush and fan ourselves like Victorian maidens?

No more, I mutter as Alfred rounds the car to open my door. No more fangirling. No more losing my breath just because he breathes near me. No more displays of naivety or wide-eyed speechlessness.
