Chapter 305: May's First Gym Challenge
After a day and a night of special training, with Ash's advice, May had finally mastered a way to counter Geodude's Rollout move.
At the same time, her Treecko, with the help of the Technical Machine provided by Ash, had also mastered moves like Mega Drain, Bullet Seed, Solar Beam, Sunny Day, and Seed Bomb.
In front of the Rustboro Gym.
"May, today is the day of your official Gym Challenge, good luck!" Ash said.
"Mm, I will do my best to defeat Roxanne!"
May responded, full of confidence.
Upon entering the Gym, they saw quite a few people inside checking the battle field.
Looking at the rock field in the middle, May said in surprise, "Is this where the Gym Challenge takes place at the Rustboro Gym? It's amazing!"
"Ash is right, this field is really suitable for Rock-type Pokemon battles!" Brock commented.
"Good morning, you are Ash from Pallet Town and May from the Petalburg Gym, right?"
A staff member walked up to them.
"Yes!" May replied.
Hearing this, the staff member looked toward the spectator seats and shouted, "Teacher, the Gym challenger has arrived!"
"Ash, May, we are truly honored that the Rustboro Gym can be the starting point for your Hoenn League challenge!" Roxanne said solemnly.
"Roxanne, I will do my best to defeat you!"
"Mm, then let's begin our Gym match!"
The two stood at opposite ends of the battle field.
At this moment, the referee looked at Roxanne, "Teacher, everything is ready."
"Roxanne, are you also a teacher at the Gym?" Brock asked in confusion.
"They are actually students from the Trainers' School, and they are currently working as assistants here while accumulating practical experience as Pokemon Trainers."
Roxanne paused, looked at May, and asked, "May, do you mind if this challenge match is recorded?"
"No problem!"
"Good, then the Gym Challenge officially begins!"
Referee: "The upcoming match is the Gym Challenge between Rustboro Gym Leader Roxanne and May from Petalburg City. The rules are a two-on-two elimination match, and only the challenger can switch Pokemon."
"I'm starting. Come on out, Geodude!"
[Pokémon: Geodude]
[Type: Rock + Ground]
[Gender: Male]
[Level: Gym Beginner]
[Ability: Rock Head (Even if a move that causes recoil damage is used, HP will not decrease)]
[Potential: Elite]
[Moves: Tackle, Defense Curl, Rollout...]
"So it really is Geodude? Okay, then I'll leave it to you, Wurmple!"
[Pokémon: Wurmple (May)]
[Type: Bug]
[Gender: Female]
[Level: Elite Beginner]
[Ability: Shield Dust]
[Potential: Elite]
[Moves: Tackle, String Shot, Poison Sting]
May's choice was Wurmple.
"Wurmple, use String Shot!"
Wurmple sprayed silk at Geodude. The silk stuck firmly to it, and some strands even caught onto the rocks on the field.
As a Gym Leader, Roxanne saw at a glance that May was trying to block Geodude's Rollout move.
"Geodude, use Mega Punch!"
Geodude's fist lit up with a white light, and it moved in close, wanting to land a punch on Wurmple.
May shouted, "Wurmple, tighten the silk!"
Wurmple pulled hard on the silk. Geodude, entangled by the silk, was pulled back instead of advancing, forced onto a rock.
"Very good, Wurmple, follow up with Poison Sting!" May said, pressing the attack.
The antennae on Wurmple's head glowed, shooting out a large number of white energy needles.
After Poison Sting hit Geodude, Geodude fell into a poisoned state.
However, Geodude itself has a 4x resistance to poison, so the damage from Poison Sting was not significant.
"Not bad, May! But this alone isn't enough to defeat my Geodude. Geodude, break free and use Magnitude!"
Geodude exerted force throughout its body and easily broke free from the silk entanglement. Then, it slammed heavily into the ground, causing the ground to shake. Wurmple showed a look of pain.
Because May was a new Trainer, Roxanne actually didn't let Geodude use its full power; otherwise, this single Magnitude move would have been enough to one-shot Wurmple.
After all, the disparity in levels was too great.
"Wurmple, hang in there, use Poison Sting again!"
After enduring Geodude's move, Wurmple fired Poison Sting again to continue the attack.
"Geodude, use Mega Punch again!"
After taking a heavy punch, Wurmple lost its ability to battle, but it had arguably exceeded its mission.
May's original plan was that landing one Poison Sting would already be a huge gain.
"Next, I'll leave it to you, Treecko!"
"Switching to a Grass-type this time?"
"Treecko, use Sunny Day!"
Geodude's condition was already very poor, so May was not in a hurry to attack.
"Sunny Day? Could that Treecko..."
Roxanne had a bad feeling.
"Geodude, use Mega Punch!"
Geodude went up, ready to give Treecko a punch.
"Treecko, dodge quickly!"
Just after finishing Sunny Day, Treecko hurriedly dodged the damage, and Geodude's punch hit the rock heavily.
"Treecko, use Bullet Seed!"
Treecko spat out a large amount of green energy bullets. After Geodude was hit, its remaining HP hit rock bottom.
"Geodude is unable to battle!"
"May, your tactics are quite good, but can your Treecko defeat this one? Come out, Nosepass!"
"Chaobei~"
[Pokémon: Nosepass]
[Type: Rock]
[Gender: Male]
[Level: Gym Intermediate]
[Ability: Magnet Pull (Uses magnetism to trap Steel-type Pokemon, making them unable to escape)]
[Potential: Elite]
[Moves: Tackle, Rock Throw, Rock Tomb, Sandstorm, Zap Cannon...]
"Nosepass?"
May took out her Pokédex to continue scanning.
"Nosepass, the Compass Pokémon. Its big nose is..."
"Treecko, do your best, use Seed Bomb!"
Hearing this, Treecko gathered three large seeds and threw them at Nosepass.
"Nosepass, use Rock Tomb to block it!"
Nosepass stomped hard on the ground, and a tall rock rose from the ground, blocking the three seeds.
Boom!
After a few explosions, the large rock was blasted to pieces.
"Treecko, now, use Mega Drain!"
