Chapter 5 - Desperate Resistance

The hole was right there—a jagged rip in the ground filled with rotting mud and dead, black leaves.

To my human mind, it was just a disgusting pit of filth. To my tiny, one-year-old body, it was the only grave left that might keep the monster away.

I didn't have any other choice. I had to get inside. It was either the mud or the snake's stomach.

I tried to dig my way into the wet earth, but my body was a total wreck.

My back legs were... I didn't even know if I had them anymore. I couldn't feel a thing from the waist down. When the snake had thrashed me against the rocks earlier, the impact had been like a car hitting a wall. My lower body had crashed into a jagged rock, and now my legs were just dead weight dragging behind me in the dirt.

I tried to move them, to kick off the ground and find some grip, but nothing happened. The realization hit me like a physical blow: I was paralyzed. I was a tortoise that couldn't even crawl.

The pain was unbearable. It was a constant, heavy throb that made my vision swim, but I had to move. I couldn't stop now. I tried to drag myself forward using only my front claws, but even that was a nightmare.

My left front leg was mangled, too. When the snake had been whipping me around like a toy, something deep inside the joint had snapped. Now, every time I pulled my weight forward, a white-hot spike of agony shot through my chest.

My shell, the "Shell" I was so proud of, was in even worse shape. It was covered in deep, jagged cracks from being thrown and bitten. I could feel the cold, dirty swamp water seeping through the breaks in the bone, touching my raw, soft insides. It was a pitiful sight—a tiny, broken turtle crawling through the muck, leaking dark blood into the dirt.

Tick.

The violet screen flickered in my vision. It felt like a cold, mechanical eye watching me die.

I stared at that last line. Poisoned. Then I remembered. When I bit the snake's neck in that moment of desperation, I had swallowed its blood without even knowing it. A strange, bitter laugh echoed in my head. I wanted to scream at the sky, but all that came out was a wet hiss.

Wow, I thought. What a gift. I finally manage to land a hit on the guy, and I end up poisoning myself. I'm a genius. A reincarnated genius dying because I drank my enemy's blood. What a perfect way to go.

The irony was funny in a dark way, but the reality was a nightmare. My body was now in a state of rising heat. I could feel a strange, boiling sensation spreading from my gut, crawling up my throat and making my eyes ache. The snake's blood wasn't just sitting in my stomach; it was starting to cook me.

[ System: Internal heat is reaching critical levels. ]

The snake was right on top of me. I could feel the heat coming off its massive, corded body. I was a hatchling, barely the size of a man's hand, and I was about to be crushed into the dirt. I felt so small. So weak. I had lived a whole life as a man, only to end up as a snack for a snake because my legs wouldn't work.

It felt so pitiful. I hadn't even been in this world for a full day yet. I had been given a second chance, and I had wasted it in less than twenty-four hours.

I am not dying here, I growled.

I gathered the last bit of strength in my one good leg. I shoved my claw into the mud, hooked it on a solid root, and threw my weight forward with everything I had left.

I felt a rush of wind and a spray of cold spit as the snake's jaws slammed shut right behind my tail—missing me by an inch and hitting the roots with a violent crack.

The impact shook the ground beneath me. I lost my grip on the edge of the pit and hit the slippery slope of the hidden tunnel. The world began to spin as I started to fall into the dark, leaving the snake's angry hissing behind

As I tumbled through the dark, the pain in my shell was suddenly replaced by something much worse. I wasn't just falling through a hole; I was starting to burn from the inside out.

It wasn't just a fever. It was a violent, pulsing heat that felt like my blood had been replaced with molten lead. My stomach felt like it was about to rip open, and for a second, I thought the snake's poison was finally going to melt me into a puddle of black sludge.

Tick.

The violet screen flickered in the darkness of the tunnel, the light strobing against the walls as I bounced off the dirt.

The moment I saw those words, it clicked.

My mind flashed back to the small, frozen fruit I had scavenged earlier. The Cold Berry. I had eaten it hoping it would save me, but I had completely forgotten about it during the fight. Now, the icy power of that berry was slamming head-first into the burning poison I had swallowed from the snake's neck. They were meeting right in the center of my body, and they were not playing nice.

The fire from the poison wasn't just burning anymore; it was twisting with the ice from the berry. They didn't cancel each other out. They didn't settle down. Instead, they began to fuse into a chaotic storm of energy that I couldn't control. It felt like someone was trying to freeze and boil my heart at the same time.

My stomach felt like a pressure cooker about to explode, the pressure building behind my eyes until they felt like they would pop out of my skull.

Internal damage was everywhere. My lungs felt like they were filled with hot, dry sand, making every breath a jagged struggle that went nowhere. I coughed, and a spray of dark, steaming blood hit the walls of the tunnel as I tumbled through the dark.

I was dying from the inside and the outside at the same time. It was a pitiful, miserable sight.

How did I get here? I wondered as the darkness swallowed me. I had lived a whole life as a human, full of memories and plans.

Then, I was reincarnated as a tiny, one-year-old tortoise. I hadn't even seen the sun rise twice in this new body. I hadn't even learned how to be an animal properly, and here I was, already on my deathbed in a dark hole under the swamp. It felt so pathetic. I was a man's mind trapped in a broken, bleeding rock, falling into a pit.

But even in the middle of the agony, a small, stubborn part of me felt a spark of pride. I looked up through the blur of my vision and saw the faint light of the surface getting smaller and smaller.

The snake wasn't there. I had escaped. I was broken, I was dying, and I was falling into the abyss—but I hadn't become that monster's dinner. I had won that much, at least. If I was going to die, I was going to die on my own terms, not as a snack.

I wasn't a living thing anymore; I was just a cracked stone tumbling into the dark. My shell banged against the hard earthen walls—crack, thud, crack—and the pain was so intense that my mind finally started to go black.

I felt my spirit drifting away from the wreckage of my body, floating in a numb, grey void where the pain couldn't reach me.

Suddenly, a massive Splash echoed through the darkness.

I hit water that felt like liquid lead. It was freezing, but it was also thick and heavy with a strange, ancient power. This was the bottom of the tunnel—a hidden pool of deep energy that hadn't been touched in centuries.

A sudden, massive wave of this energy started rushing in from the pool, pushing into the cracks of my shell and flooding my lungs.

The energy was too much. It felt like my soul was being stretched until it was paper-thin. I could feel the System doing something violent. It was rewriting me from the inside out, crushing the heat of the poison and the cold of the berry together, using the weight of the pool to weld them into something new.

It was a brutal, mechanical reconstruction. I felt my bones being hammered and my shell being welded shut with a dark, heavy mineral siphoned from the water. My heart gave one final, agonizing shudder as the last of the pool's power was forced into my core. An iron weight settled into my very soul.

The light in my eyes flared one last time—a blinding violet spark—and then everything went blank. My mind shut down completely, and my body sank into the deep, blue silence of the pool.
