Chapter 9 - uniform

Still, her thoughts wandered to Lyra. Elara had ensured the new uniforms were both alluring and practical for the rest of the staff—a general elevation of the household's aesthetic—but for Lyra, she had something far more specific, and far more restrictive, in mind. The girl possessed a natural, unstudied grace that the standard measurements simply didn't do justice. If Lyra was to be the vessel for Alaric's legacy, she needed to be a constant, visual pull on his senses.

Rising from her seat, the heavy brocade of her gown sweeping across the rugs, Elara made her way to the tailor's room in the servant's wing. The air there was different, smelling of steam, pressed wool, and the sharp tang of metal shears. Racks of the new black dresses lined the walls, a dark, uniform army of silk and wool waiting to be deployed. The tailor, a woman whose eyes were as sharp as her needles, was busy at a large wooden table, adjusting a hem. She glanced up, her expression shifting to one of immediate respect as Elara entered.

"Ah, Lady Elara," the tailor greeted, setting down her chalk. "Is there something I can assist you with? A final fitting for your evening wear, perhaps?"

Elara leaned slightly against the heavy oak doorway, crossing her arms in a way that felt casual but carried the weight of a command. A mischievous, almost predatory glint flickered in her eye as she surveyed the black garments.

"Yes. About Lyra's uniform," she began, her tone dropping into a low but deliberate register that made the tailor pause. "I want it altered before the evening service begins. I want you to make it smaller, snugger—far more form-fitting than the others."

The tailor's brow furrowed in confusion, her hand hovering over a piece of charcoal. "Smaller, my lady? But Miss Lyra already tried the standard size yesterday and confirmed the fit. It seemed quite appropriate on her petite frame."

Elara's lips curved into that same slow, sly smile she had worn in her study. "Exactly. She's already confirmed it fits, which means there's no reason for her to suspect a deliberate change. She will simply think the fabric is stiff or that she has filled out. Adjust it discreetly. I want the bodice tightened so there is no room for a single breath of extra fabric, and the skirt shortened just a fraction more than the rest."

She moved into the room, running a finger along the smooth black sleeve of one of the dresses. Her mind flashed back to the morning, to the "evidence" on her own hands, and the desperate need to ensure Alaric stayed captivated.

"Her figure is... exceptional," Elara continued, her voice like velvet. "And I'd like that highlighted. It isn't a matter of vanity; it is a matter of refinement. I want her to move through the halls like a shadow that he cannot help but follow with his eyes. Can you achieve that level of precision?"

The tailor hesitated for a heartbeat, sensing the strange intensity behind the mistress's request. To alter a servant's uniform into something so provocatively tight was unusual, almost scandalous, but she knew better than to question the Merchant Queen when her tone held that particular edge of iron.

"As you wish, Lady Elara," the tailor replied with a shallow bow. "I shall have the alterations finished by sunset. She will find it waiting for her before the dinner bell."

Pleased with the tailor's silent acquiescence, Elara turned to leave, a satisfied smile playing on her lips. She knew Lyra's reserved, dutiful nature would prevent her from raising any objections, even if the fabric felt as tight as a second skin. The girl would likely blame her own body or the stiffness of the new material before she would ever dare to question the Mistress's decree. The groundwork had been laid perfectly, with every stitch and seam accounted for in the grander design of the house.

As she returned to her study, her heels clicking with a renewed sense of purpose on the marble, Elara couldn't help but admire the subtle allure of the other maids' outfits once more as they passed her in the corridors. The way the new uniforms balanced a sharp, professional elegance with a quiet, undeniable seduction filled her with a profound sense of satisfaction. It was a masterpiece of domestic engineering. Everything was coming together exactly as planned, and soon, the results would speak for themselves in the flicker of Alaric's gaze.

She spent the remaining hours of the afternoon immersed in her ledgers, though her focus was no longer entirely on the price of spices or the weight of gold. Her mind kept drifting toward the evening ahead, visualizing the moment the trap would be sprung. When the shadows in the study grew long and the grandfather clock in the hall struck the hour, she set aside her quill. It was time.

The transition from the workspace to the dining hall was a transition into a theater of her own making.

Elara entered the grand dining hall with a graceful, regal air, her eyes immediately scanning the room as the maids diligently prepared for the dinner service. The atmosphere was heavy with anticipation. The warm, amber glow of the massive crystal chandeliers reflected off the polished silverware and the gleaming crystal goblets, creating a shimmering backdrop for the figures moving through the room. But Elara's attention quickly focused on one particular figure standing near the head of the long mahogany table—Lyra.

The tailor had done her work with a terrifyingly precise hand. The new maid uniform fit Lyra differently from all the others; it was no longer merely clothing, but a provocation. It hugged her petite form with such uncompromising precision that it seemed to accentuate every breath the girl took. The bodice was so tight it highlighted the gentle, youthful curve of her waist and the soft swell of her hips with a clarity that was almost startling. Her chest, modest yet perfectly proportioned, was held firmly in place by the reinforced seams, making the white lace collar of the dress stand out in sharp contrast against her skin.

As Lyra moved gracefully around the room, placing the heavy silver cutlery, the hem of her slightly shorter skirt swayed with each rhythmic step. Elara noticed with a surge of triumph how the snug, opaque pantyhose accentuated Lyra's legs, clinging seamlessly to her figure and giving her movements a fluid, liquid elegance. When Lyra bent slightly to adjust a heavy centerpiece, Elara caught herself staring. Although Lyra's underwear would have been visible under the shorter, flared skirt as it rose, it was perfectly and modestly covered by the dark, compressive fabric of the tights. The way the fabric molded to her form, showing the play of muscle and the smoothness of her skin, only made the girl's figure more striking.

Elara leaned back in her chair, a sly, predatory smile playing on her lips. Perfect. The uniform had turned out exactly as she'd hoped—better, even. It gave Lyra an air of sophisticated elegance while subtly, relentlessly highlighting her natural, vibrant beauty. She was a vision of youthful vitality, a stark contrast to the sterile halls of the mansion.

Her gaze shifted briefly to Alaric, who sat at the far end of the table, already seated and waiting for their guest. He was currently engrossed in a quiet conversation with a visiting noble, his face a mask of polite, knightly interest, seemingly oblivious to Lyra's enhanced and provocative appearance. But Elara knew her husband better than anyone in the world—she knew the way his eyes tracked movement, and she knew he was observant even when he pretended to be at his most stoic. He had noticed. He must have. The air between them felt charged, a silent current flowing beneath the polite clatter of dinner preparations.
