Cherreads

Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: The Clockwork Dan

The transition from a corporate skyscraper to a techno-gothic foundry did not happen through a clean doorway, but through a sensory slaughter.

Lin Wei gasped, his lungs instantly filling with the heavy, greasy taste of pulverized sulfur and high-grade diesel soot. He wasn't sitting down, nor was he floating in a digital glass vault. He was suspended three feet off the floor of rusted iron grating, his wrists bound by heavy, clicking copper restraints that were piped directly into a wall-mounted pressure boiler.

[TRANS-MIGRATION COMPLETE: ARRIVED AT SYSTEM MATRIX 2.6]

[World Profile: The Obsidian Spire of Liang (Techno-Gothic Wuxia)]

[Host Identity: Lin Wei (Disgraced Outer Disciple of the Lin Forge-Sword Clan)]

[Current Status: Condemned. Your 'Steam-Veins' are being forcibly drained of Diesel-Qi to pay the Clan's monthly coal tax.]

Lin Wei lowered his head, analyzing his new vessel. This body was leaner, hard-bitten, and crosshatched with ugly, silver scars where copper tubes had been surgically threaded directly into his meridians. The skin of his right arm was human for now, but his internal bone structure felt dense, vibrating with a familiar, heavy resonance that he carried from universe to universe.

"System," he thought, his vision flickering with a new, soot-stained bronze interface instead of the corporate blue or Northern purple. "Why is the HUD different? Where is the Sovereign Forge?"

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: Adaptability Protocol Activated.]

[The Warden Protocol has recalibrated its architecture based on Local Reality Physics and the Host's Primary DNA.]

[Current System Function: THE SOVEREIGN ENGINE]

[Core Mechanism: Converts 'Sovereign Points' into 'Pressure and Heat'. You no longer forge items out of nothing; you overwrite the mechanical and biological specifications of existing steam-tech and internal Dan-engines.]

[Current Points Carried Over: 981,700.]

[Local Reality Suppression: Maximum output locked at 12,000 Kilopascals of pressure per localized action.]

"Look at him, still trying to circulate his exhaust," a rasping voice mocked from the gloom of the foundry floor.

A man in a heavy, grease-stained leather apron stepped into the orange glow of the furnace. His left leg was entirely a piston-driven brass prosthetic that let out a sharp hiss of steam with every step. He carried a long, iron siphon-needle hooked up to a glass carboy that was slowly filling with a thick, iridescent black fluid—Lin Wei's Diesel-Qi.

"Give it up, Third Young Master," the siphon-master grunted, tapping the copper pipes bound to Lin Wei's wrists. "Your elder brother, Lin Hao the Steam-Sovereign, already signed the script. The Lin Clan's forge-ovens are cold. To keep the Imperial Coal-Train stopping at our station, the branch disciples have to give up their marrow. Your 1-Star Steam-Veins are just enough to power the main lift for another week."

Lin Wei didn't look at the carboy. He felt the cold, oily pull of the siphon inside his arms. The Diesel-Qi in this body was sluggish, low-grade, and dirty—the typical energy of an uncalibrated discard.

But beneath that sluggish fluid, deep within the marrow of his bones, the Warden's DNA remained unchanged. It was a genetic signature that rejected the concept of an external siphon. Whether it was an Imperial Sun, a Corporate Grid, or a Gothic Boiler, his blood treated them all as unauthorized operators.

"System," Lin Wei thought, his left eye pulsing with a deep, volcanic purple behind his eyelids. "The current pressure in these copper pipes... what happens if I refuse the vent?"

[Analyzing Local Network...]

[The foundry pipes are linked to the 'Main Boiler of the 3rd Clan Sector'.]

[Option Found: 'The Sovereign Overpressure' — Cost: 8,000 Points.]

[Effect: Overwrites the boiler's safety valves with 'Warden Logic', turning the internal pressure of the machine against its own structural seals.]

"Do it," Lin Wei commanded, his lips drawing back into a sharp, unfeeling line. "Let's see how much pressure this clan can take before it bursts."

[Points Expended: 8,000.]

[Current Balance: 973,700.]

[Initializing Overpressure Matrix...]

The copper restraints around his wrists didn't break. They began to scream.

The low, steady hum of the foundry's exhaust pipes suddenly spiked into a high, piercing whistle. The thick glass carboy filling with his Diesel-Qi cracked down the middle, the iridescent black fluid instantly turning into a pressurized gas that shot backward into the siphon-needle.

"The pressure... the pressure is reversing!" the siphon-master shouted, his brass leg letting out a frantic, automatic vent of steam as he stumbled backward. He scrambled for the wall-mounted valve, trying to cut the line. "The main boiler is at redline! What did you do to your meridians, trash?!"

Lin Wei didn't answer. He didn't have to.

He lifted his head, his single human eye locking onto the master as the copper pipes behind his back began to glow an angry, cherry red. The Sovereign Engine inside his soul had just ignited its first fire, and twenty chapters of this world's reckoning were about to begin with a broken valve.
