Chapter 83 - Sovereign’s Fury

The air at the high pass felt suffocating, saturated with the toxic purple haze radiating from Draeven Zareth's camp above. But as Princess Vaelora stood up from the rocky ledge, the mourning in her eyes was completely replaced by a dangerous, blinding gold light. The crown of Solthera on her head vibrated, responding to the raw, unadulterated emotion surging through her veins.

She had watched her father dissolve. She had seen Kaelor and Seraphine turn to ash. The pain was a physical weight crushing her chest, but looking up at the summit where Azeal's blue starlight fire was flickering against the dark, she refused to break.

"No more," she whispered to the freezing wind. "No more death."

A company of fifty elite Xeraphyn vanguard soldiers, sent by Draeven's wife to secure the ridge pathways, noticed the glowing silhouette of the princess. Armed with heavy barricade shields and curved shadow-blades, they moved into a defensive phalanx, locking their iron shields together to block the narrow track completely.

"Halt, girl!" the Xeraphyn captain barked, his blade dripping with dark enchantments. "The ridge is sealed by order of the Dark Lord. Surrender the crown or be slaughtered."

Vaelora didn't stop walking. Her boots clicked against the blood-stained stone with a steady, terrifying rhythm. She lowered her head, her dual Midnight Daggers hanging loosely at her sides, absorbing the faint starlight filtering through the clouds.

"I am Vaelora Vaeltheron," she said, her voice dropping to a low, resonant register that echoed off the cliff walls like distant thunder. "The daughter of Lysara. The blood of Aetheron. The rightful Sovereign of the Seven Realms."

With every step she took, the ground beneath her feet began to glow. The silver-and-gold scale armor she wore drazhined with an intense, blinding radiance.

"Kill her!" the captain screamed, sensing the terrifying shift in the atmosphere.

The Xeraphyn phalanx charged forward, their heavy shields forming an iron wall. But Vaelora did not dodge. She did not retreat. She raised her hands, channeling the ancient, forbidden elemental arts Lord Kaelor had secretly taught her in the safety of the palace gardens—the magic meant for the day Solthera's foundations would crack.

"Sol-Vaelis!" she cried out.

She slammed her palms together. An explosive, shockwave of pure, condensed starlight erupted from her body. The sheer kinetic force didn't just push the Xeraphyn soldiers back; it shattered their iron barricade shields into thousands of lethal metallic shards. The front rank of soldiers was vaporized instantly, their dark armor turning to ash before they could even scream.

The remaining vanguard hesitated, their eyes wide with absolute horror as they looked at the young princess. She was moving with an impossible, ethereal speed now.

Vaelora blurred. She reappeared in the center of their ranks, her Midnight Daggers tracing lethal arcs of gold and dark matter through the air. A Xeraphyn swordsman lunged at her throat; she sidestepped effortlessly, her dagger slipping between the plates of his neck armor. Another swung a heavy mace; she parried with her left blade, channeled her magic through the hilt, and sent a localized blast of light exploding through his chest plate.

She was an absolute storm of vengeance on the mountain path. She wasn't just fighting for survival anymore; she was fighting to clear the path to her love.

The captain of the vanguard, bleeding and desperate, attempted to summon a dark smoke-viper from his staff to blind her. Vaelora turned her gaze toward him, her golden eyes flashing. With a sharp flick of her wrist, she unleashed a wave of crystalline stalagmites from the rocky floor. The starlight crystals erupted from the stone, impaling the captain and shattering his dark staff into useless splinters.

Within minutes, the entire fifty-man vanguard lay decimated, their bodies dissolving into the dark, heavy smoke of the fallen.

Panting, her armor splattered with dark soot, Vaelora looked up. The path to the very top of the peak was completely clear. She could hear the deafening, metallic echoes of Azeal's Star Fire Sword clashing against Draeven's staff just a few hundred meters above.

Steeling her heart, she mounted her exhausted but loyal Luminar horse once more. "Hold on, Azeal," she whispered fiercely into the dark night. "I'm coming."
