Chapter 26 -  Chapter 26 — “Learning to Feel Safe Again”

The village felt quieter than usual.

Not peaceful.

Just… careful.

The rescued women stayed near the inner section, away from noise, away from unfamiliar faces.

No one forced them to speak.

No one questioned them.

Food was placed near them.

Water kept ready.

But most of them barely touched anything.

They ate like people who didn't trust the next meal to exist.

Slow.

Guarded.

As if someone might take it away.

---

 Fear That Doesn't Leave

One of the younger women woke up screaming in the middle of the night.

It wasn't loud.

But it was enough.

Within seconds, others woke up too.

Some curled into themselves.

Some covered their ears.

Some just stared blankly into darkness.

Angelika rushed inside immediately.

"It's okay… you're safe," she said softly.

But the word safe felt unfamiliar in that space.

The girl kept shaking.

"No… no… they'll come back… they always come back…"

Her voice broke.

Elara stepped forward slowly.

Not rushing.

Not forcing.

She sat beside the girl.

"They won't come here," Elara said, calm but firm.

The girl looked at her, eyes filled with disbelief.

"How do you know…?"

Elara didn't answer immediately.

Then she said quietly,

"Because we're not running anymore."

Something in her tone…

It wasn't comfort.

It was certainty.

And slowly…

the girl's breathing began to steady.

 Different Ways to Heal

Days passed.

But healing wasn't the same for everyone.

Some women stayed silent.

They spoke only when necessary.

Avoided eye contact.

Stayed together in small groups.

Others… tried to act normal.

Helping with small tasks.

Cleaning.

Carrying water.

But even then, their hands trembled sometimes.

As if their bodies remembered things their minds were trying to forget.

One woman refused to sleep inside.

She stayed near the outer wall every night.

Watching.

Waiting.

Dane noticed her once and asked,

"Why don't you rest?"

She replied without looking at him,

"If I sleep… I don't hear them coming."

Dane didn't argue.

The next night—

He placed an armed guard quietly near her position.

Without saying a word.

---

 Kael's Silence

Kael didn't approach them immediately.

He watched.

From a distance.

Understanding something important—

Freedom given suddenly… doesn't feel like freedom.

It feels like uncertainty.

Angelika stood beside him one evening.

"They don't trust this place yet."

Kael nodded.

"They were never given a reason to trust anything."

Angelika looked at him.

"Then you need to give them one."

Kael didn't reply.

But that night—

He walked into their section for the first time.

---

 A Simple Rule

The women went silent the moment he entered.

Fear.

Instinct.

Conditioning.

Kael noticed it immediately.

He didn't step too close.

Didn't try to comfort.

Didn't soften his presence artificially.

Instead, he spoke clearly.

"No one here will touch you without your permission."

Silence.

"No one will take you anywhere."

Still silence.

"If anyone forces you…"

His voice turned colder.

"They answer to me."

That got their attention.

Not kindness.

Not sympathy.

Authority.

Protection.

One woman slowly looked up.

"You say that now…"

Kael met her eyes.

"I will say it again tomorrow."

"And the day after."

"And every day you need to hear it."

There was no emotion in his tone.

Just truth.

And strangely…

that felt more real than comfort.

---

 First Step Forward

A few days later—

Something small changed.

One of the rescued women approached the work area.

Hesitant.

Unsure.

Angelika noticed her immediately.

"You want to help?" she asked gently.

The woman nodded slightly.

Angelika handed her a simple task.

Sorting dried food.

Nothing heavy.

Nothing demanding.

Just… something normal.

The woman's hands trembled at first.

But she didn't stop.

That evening—

She ate a full meal for the first time.

Not because she was hungry.

But because… she felt she could.

---

 A New Strength

Elara began training sessions separately.

Not forcing anyone.

Only those who stepped forward.

At first, only two came.

Then four.

Then more.

Not for war.

Not yet.

But to feel control again.

To feel their bodies belong to them.

To feel strength instead of helplessness.

One woman held a spear and said quietly,

"They won't take me again."

Elara looked at her and replied,

"Then make sure of it."

---

 A Slow Change

Days turned into weeks.

The fear didn't disappear.

But it changed.

It became quieter.

Less sharp.

Less controlling.

Laughter returned—

Not loudly.

Not freely.

But softly.

Like something being rebuilt.

Kael watched it all.

Not as a savior.

But as someone responsible.

Because he understood something deeply now—

Saving people…

was the easy part.

Giving them a reason to live again…

That was harder.

Much harder.

 Final Thought

That night, Kael stood at the edge of the village again.

Angelika joined him.

"They're getting better," she said.

Kael nodded.

"Slowly."

Angelika looked at him.

"You didn't try to comfort them."

Kael's eyes stayed on the horizon.

"They don't need comfort."

"They need stability."

Silence.

Then he added quietly—

"And time."

Because wounds like those…

Don't heal in days.

But if protected properly—

They turn into something else.

Not weakness.

Not fear.

But strength.

The kind that doesn't break again.
