Chapter 84 - Chapter 84: The Authority That Was HisWhat One Percent Allowed

The new panel resolved before Kael with a clarity considerably different from every previous notification the System had offered him.

[Hidden Path: Titanblood — True Commander][Independent Authority: 1%][Function: Command without Seal Recognition][Warning: Authority is generated by the Commander himself.]

He read the last line twice, understanding settling into place slowly. Every previous percentage had been granted, measured out by a system deciding how much trust to extend him. This was different. This authority didn't ask permission from anything.

It simply existed, because he did.

One percent, though, offered little room for ambition. He couldn't command the entity outright, couldn't override the seal's own vast, ancient structure. But small, he had learned across an entire season of impossible odds, was not the same as useless.

What He Cut Instead

The opportunity arrived within the hour, the enemy's soldiers closing on another network node with the same disciplined urgency that had marked every previous seizure.

Kael did not reach for the seal itself this time. He reached instead for the thin, specific thread connecting that node to the wider network — not the lock, but the wire running to it.

"I don't command the seal," he murmured, focusing his small, independent authority against the connection rather than the structure it served. "I command the connection."

[Independent Command Executed][Network Node 8: Disconnected]

The line severed cleanly, the node going dark to whatever purpose the enemy had intended for it, and Kael felt something settle in his chest that hadn't been there since this entire crisis began — not triumph exactly, but proof. Proof that this new authority was real, separate, and entirely his own.

What Borr Won

North, Borr led his gathered Ironjaw warriors through the old tunnel his own memory had carved from decades of mountain survival, emerging behind the enemy's positioning at a node none of Angelika's careful maps had ever accounted for.

The enemy soldiers stationed there reacted fast, but not fast enough to properly brace against an attack arriving from ground they'd never thought to guard. The fight was short and brutal, Borr's own wound screaming with every motion, but his warriors pressed the advantage before the enemy could organize a proper defense.

"We didn't come through the mountain to lose it at the other side," Borr growled, driving his blade through a soldier's guard despite the blood still soaking dark through his own bandages.

They did not destroy the node. Borr understood, even through the haze of pain and exertion, that a captured asset served Titanblood considerably better than a ruined one. The Ironjaw banner rose over the small structure within minutes, and Dean, receiving word of the victory shortly after, allowed himself the first genuine relief this long, grinding day had offered him.

What the Warrior Finally Feared

The ancient blood warrior felt his own authority climb in the wake of the enemy's remaining successes.

[Foreign Command: 47% → 49%]

Then, without warning, the disconnection at Node 8 registered through the same network he'd spent this entire war carefully manipulating, and understanding arrived with a coldness that broke through his composure entirely.

"He bypassed the seal," he said quietly, the words carrying a weight none of his previous calm assessments had managed.

For the first time since his appearance before Thornrock's walls weeks earlier, genuine unease crossed his features. He turned to his officers with new, urgent instruction.

"Forget the remaining nodes."

Then, to himself, quiet and absolute: "Kill the commander."

He did not mean Dean.

What the Entity Explained

South, the entity's voice returned with a weight considerably more contemplative than its earlier, patient testing.

You understand now why the first commander failed, it said.

"Because he tried to control you?" Kael asked.

No.

A pause, deliberate and heavy.

Because he believed authority was something he could possess.

Kael turned the distinction over slowly, the shape of it settling into place alongside everything the vision had already shown him. The ancient warrior who had once knelt in this same chamber had reached for the entity's own power, treating command as a prize to be seized and held. Whatever had happened to him at that threshold — the transformation Kael had glimpsed and refused to fully absorb — had followed directly from that mistake.

To become the True Commander was not to dominate the entity at all.

It was to make his own authority independent of it entirely.

The New Race

"How much Independent Authority do I need?" Kael asked, though some part of him already dreaded the answer.

[Independent Authority: 1%][Minimum Authority Required to Override Primary Vessel: 100%]

Kael stared at the number, the shape of the challenge reframing itself entirely. Fifty percent had once felt like an impossible, dangerous ceiling. This was double that, and this time, no ancient warrior's borrowed strength would help him climb it — only whatever authority he generated entirely on his own.

You don't need one hundred, the entity said, before his own dread could fully settle.

"Then how much?"

Enough to make the vessel recognize you.

The answer offered no comfort, only a fresh, unmeasured mystery layered atop the last.

What He Was Missing

A final set of numbers resolved before him, stranger than anything the System had shown him so far.

[Titanblood Compatibility: 31%][Independent Authority: 1%][True Commander Recognition: 0%]

[Requirement for True Commander Recognition: ???]

"What am I missing?" Kael asked.

A command of your own, the entity said.

Kael turned the phrase over, uncertain. "I don't understand."

Not an order.

The entity's voice settled deeper, weightier, carrying something that felt, for the first time, less like an ancient test and more like genuine patience extended toward someone it had decided, however cautiously, might be worth the waiting.

A command you are willing to die to uphold.
