Chapter 278
The Direwolves
The Direwolves.
A savage tribe numbering nearly a hundred wolves, perhaps a little more.
Their strength far surpassed that of the goblins. Even ten goblins fighting together could not take down a single wolf.
And so…
Fear of them had taken root in everyone's hearts.
"A bunch of fools," Arthur muttered coldly.
"Arthur…" Rimuru said confidently. "They're mine."
Arthur sighed calmly, then lifted Rimuru off his shoulder and placed him on the ground.
Rimuru slid forward, while at least thirty savage Direwolves stood before him, their eyes red and their bodies tense, ready to pounce.
Arthur took a step forward and spoke in a steady voice that carried no apparent threat.
"If you leave now, I'll let you go in peace."
Then he raised his hand and pointed his finger at the ground.
The earth split open before them in a long, straight line, as though the ground had been sliced by a scorching, razor-sharp blade. A faint mist rose from the fissure.
"If any of you crosses this line…"
He paused for a moment before continuing in a tone of deadly indifference.
"You will die."
A heavy silence descended.
"He's strong…"
"That human… his strength is terrifying."
"Wait… is he even human?"
Whispers began spreading among the wolves.
"His hair is long, white and black…"
"His skin is strangely pale…"
"His ears are slightly pointed…"
One of the wolves stepped forward. He was the largest among them. He looked directly at Arthur, then let out a loud, challenging howl.
"What is an elf doing in a goblin tribe?!"
He shouted furiously.
At his words, everyone turned to look at Arthur in astonishment.
Even the goblins themselves, despite having met him before, had never paid much attention to his appearance.
All they knew… was that he was strong.
As for Rimuru, he felt confused, but he did not ask.
Arthur smiled calmly.
He gestured with his hand, and a broken wooden chair lying on its side flew toward him before settling in front of him.
He sat down calmly, crossed his right leg over his left, and clasped his hands before his face, his gaze cold.
"Elves…
Humans…
Goblins…
Wolves…
Dragons…"
Then he spoke with unmistakable disdain.
"None of this nonsense concerns me."
He raised his gaze toward the wolf.
"I'm human, you fool."
He fell silent for a moment before adding:
"As for my appearance… it has nothing to do with fighting."
He pointed toward the line on the ground once more.
"Now, will you listen to what my friend has to say?
Or will you act recklessly and attack?"
"The choice is yours."
Then he stated with absolute clarity:
"As for me… I swear that I will not interfere, no matter the outcome."
The wolf leader growled.
"I swear by the God of Wind and Nature, you elf!"
Arthur sighed calmly, then replied without hesitation.
"I swear upon my heart that I will not interfere in Rimuru's fight against you…
If I break this oath, may my heart stop, and may I die. However, if all of you attack him together, I will intervene."
A Heart Oath.
An oath that mattered regardless of which world it was sworn in or which timeline it belonged to.
It was an oath bound to the heavens themselves.
If broken… death was inevitable, no matter how powerful the one who swore it might be.
Upon hearing the oath, the wolf smiled maliciously, then suddenly charged forward, crossing the line.
"I'll slaughter every last one of you!"
But…
He never finished his shout.
A sharp, cutting sound pierced the air.
A strike cleaved through flesh before crashing into the tree behind him.
The wolf fell quietly to the ground.
He tried to turn around…
But his body had been severed, and he collapsed motionless.
"Water Blade."
Rimuru said with an excited, mischievous smile as he looked at the corpse before him.
In an instant, the wolves erupted in fury.
They charged toward Rimuru together, howling with hatred.
Their leader had died before their eyes… with humiliating ease.
"All right… have it your way."
Arthur sighed.
He raised his sword toward the darkened sky.
A blazing streak tore through the air with tremendous force.
"Blazing Inferno."
The flames began to move, twisting like a living serpent and radiating suffocating heat.
"Arthur! Stop, I have a plan!"
Rimuru shouted hastily.
"One minute… just one minute."
Arthur smiled calmly, but he did not stop.
He moved his sword through the air and stood tall.
"Bow before your new leader now…"
He spoke in a majestic voice.
"Rimuru Tempest."
Then he added with terrifying coldness:
"Or face a fate worse than death…
At my hands, the King of Death."
He let out a low roar, but its impact was overwhelming.
Before Rimuru could intervene—
The wolves suddenly bowed.
Their heads lowered to the ground, their bodies trembling in complete submission.
The surroundings fell silent.
"…Good."
Arthur said.
"What… hmm."
