Chapter 1 - welcome back

[opening wormhole]

the diligent little screen responded as I waved my hand in an arc across the sky in front of me, my face blank, my emotions more or less neutral.

I mean, here I was accomplishing my goal, and yet, at the same time, returning felt alien.

it felt wrong.

I didn't want to go back, but I sure as shit didn't want to stay here.

I thought to myself honestly.

I mean, seriously though, if I think about it even a little bit, I was more or less stuck standing alone at a crossroads, not leaning one way or the other, positive or negative.

I sighed, more bored than I was anything else.

"all this time, all that effort, and now, here I am literally just waving my hand and everything I want is happening." I laughed to myself, shaking my head side to side in minor disbelief as I did so.

"how dull." I exhaled, then stepped through the open tear in spacetime.

my body vanishing from the world I'd been unfortunate enough to reside within, and then immediately materializing on the other side.

on, or should I say in, the sky of my old world.

a place I, well, a place I don't even know how to call home.

something that, pretty immediately I dare say, became apparent.

I nearly groaned, while being instantly assaulted by screens.

[no system is detected on this world, checking and loading data, notice: previously insufficient backlogged data is being retrieved and loaded]

[notice: data has been loaded, initializing self-system]

[notice: while initializing, an option to launch the system worldwide has been discovered]

[would you like to gift this world with the system?]

[warning: the resident Gods have been made aware of your presence! launching the system may result in divinity clash!]

they chided, annoyingly.

their high-pitched ding alert tones piercing my ears as I more or less ignored them all.

"why in the world would I want to do that? it'd be the equivalent of giving a monkey a loaded handgun and being surprised when it shoots itself in the foot." I responded absentmindedly as I stared down at the city below me, the wind gently brushing past my hovering form, rustling my suit.

"besides, the resident Gods have this handled, they need the worship, I don't." I added, my hand brushing my long brown hair out of my face out of sheer habit as I continued eyeing the horizon, the city, the people.

the mortal species I once "belonged" to.

the mortal species I no longer held any reason to help.

I kept to myself as my own screen finally finished loading and popped up in front of me.

the screens read, until I closed them all.

my eyes relaxedly returning to the city below.

my hands in my pockets.

my jacket softly billowing in the breeze.

my somewhat undone top flapping against my skin.

I inhaled, taking a deep, intentional breath, my eyes closing slowly as I did so.

"I'm really back." I exhaled, my eyes opening.

"I'm actually in this godforsaken cesspit again." I let out with a sneer as I immediately began dropping from the sky, my posture never changing, my hands never leaving my pockets as the wind raced past my falling form.

"I should do something about it, shouldn't I?" I asked myself with a smirk as I hit the ground, more than ready to get rid of this newfound boredom.
