Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Fadeaway Buzzer-Beater from the Center

"My god! Blake Su—a rookie center—actually shook off the No. 1 pick, guard John Wall?!"

"A center crossing up a guard?"

"Hahaha! That's right—a center crossing up a guard! This center plays with a completely unique style. It's such a joy to watch!"

"And that huge block—absolutely incredible!"

"Yeah!"

As Wall, completely sent flying by the move, stumbled into the paint, the home Suns fans leapt to their feet in celebration, while Wizards fans stared at one another in stunned disbelief.

More importantly,

after Blake Su shook Wall and knocked down that mid-range jumper, the gap was down to just two points. One three-pointer would wipe out a 21-point deficit and put the Suns ahead.

"Unbelievable!"

At the commentary table,

Van Gundy shook his head in amazement. "Mike, can you imagine? Just a few minutes ago, the Suns were down by more than twenty points. Now the Wizards are only up by two.

There's still 1:07 on the clock.

The Suns have a real chance to hit a three and take the lead. This… this is just incredible."

"Absolutely,"

Mike Breen nodded excitedly with a smile. "Blake Su—this kid who came out of nowhere—has turned his NBA debut into something magical.

With 1:07 remaining,

let's see how this ends."

On the court.

Play resumed.

Wizards ball. Nick Young brought it up, matching up with Blake Su at the right side of the arc. He gave Su a casual glance, wearing an air of total nonchalance—he can be as strong as he wants, I'm still Nick Young.

"Bang!"

He rose up for a three right in Su's face, shooting over the 215-centimeter frame. If it went in, the game would be over.

Unfortunately,

he badly underestimated Blake Su's ability, bolstered by Iverson-level talent.

"Clang!"

Under Su's contest, Nick Young missed. The Wizards' mediocre record existed for a reason—they lacked a true superstar with ice-cold nerves.

Wall was still too young.

"General" Arenas had been ravaged by injuries and was no longer the player he once was.

As for Young, though he led the team in scoring and had some clutch courage… he was bold enough, but his shooting was always a gamble.

"Smack!"

Frye secured the rebound and handed it off to Steve Nash to push the break.

49.4 seconds remaining.

If the Suns scored a three on this possession, they would take the lead.

"Thump, thump, thump!"

At the top of the arc, Nash executed a handoff to Blake Su. In such a critical moment, entrusting the ball to a rookie spoke volumes about the trust in Su's ability.

Power forward Blatche stepped up.

"Don't let him shoot!"

Coach Saunders shouted from the sideline, his face dark.

Wall immediately understood, rushing over with Blatche to double-team Blake Su. At this point, winning mattered more than pride—he could forget about beating Su one-on-one.

"Buzz!"

Seeing the double coming, Blake Su instantly kicked the ball to Nash in the left corner. His towering frame and lightning-fast reaction time made the pass razor-sharp.

"Smack!"

"Swish!"

Nash caught it cleanly, wide open, and drilled the three without hesitation.

The Suns took the lead!

"An assist from center Blake Su, and Nash knocks down the three! In less than half a quarter, the Suns have erased a massive 21-point deficit and tied the game!"

Van Gundy said excitedly.

Mike Breen laughed as he added, "Blake Su, this 'surprise weapon,' is the Suns' savior tonight!"

The Wizards players looked grim. Blowing a 21-point lead was a brutal blow. Still, with 37.1 seconds left and possession in hand, they retained a measure of control.

"Bang, bang, bang!"

Nick Young held the ball at the top of the arc, facing Richardson. After some physical jostling, he ripped through the defense and attacked the rim. With Frye rotating over to help, Young hung in the air and flipped up a layup.

"Clang!"

A bit too much force—the ball rattled off the rim.

The rebound?

McGee leapt with all his might, secured the crucial board, and kicked it out to Wall on the perimeter. The Wizards kept possession and reset the offense with 22.5 seconds left.

Wall slowed the tempo, looking to score while denying the Suns a final chance.

Blake Su stepped up to guard him.

"Hey, in crunch time, a 215-centimeter center guarding a lightning-fast guard—now that's something you don't see every day,"

Van Gundy laughed.

"So what?"

Mike Breen replied. "Blake Su isn't an ordinary center. With his elite physical gifts, he's more than capable of defending guards on the perimeter one-on-one."

On the court.

As the clock dipped under ten seconds, Wall's eyes gleamed with intent. He dribbled deliberately, searching for his moment.

Blake Su locked in as well. This defensive possession was crucial—he had to come through. It would mean everything for future contracts and endorsements.

But then—

Blatche suddenly rushed up to set a screen. Wall used it to slip past Su. From the right high post, facing Grant Hill's help defense, Wall rose for a mid-range jumper.

Swish!

Good.

"Wow!"

"Wall hits the clutch mid-range shot to take a one-point lead! The No. 1 pick showing incredible composure right out of the gate!"

Mike Breen roared.

Van Gundy praised him as well. "Wall is phenomenal. That jumper gives him 35 points tonight, and it leaves the Suns with just 4.4 seconds.

And the Suns have no timeouts left.

So… that was practically a dagger."

On the court.

4.4 seconds. No timeouts. The Suns inbound from the backcourt. Nash fires the pass to Blake Su on the baseline. Su catches it and explodes forward, racing against time.

2.7 seconds—midcourt.

1.3 seconds—right side of the arc.

0.8 seconds—right high post.

Blake Su slammed on the brakes. Blatche and Wall were already closing in, but there was no time to hesitate. He stopped, rose up, and let the shot fly.

No—

more precisely, Blake Su executed a sudden stop-and-fadeaway jumper.

"Whoosh!"

Shooting over the four outstretched hands of Blatche and Wall, the ball left his fingertips just as the red light flashed and time expired.

The spinning ball arced toward the rim, gripping the hearts of everyone in the arena.

As countless fans clenched their fists and stared wide-eyed, the ball traced a beautiful arc through the air, then—

dropped cleanly through the net.

"Swish!"

It's good!

Center Blake Su—fadeaway jumper—game winner!

"Boom!"

The arena fell silent for a split second, then erupted in thunderous cheers and deafening roars like a tidal wave.
