Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Broken Friendships and Consequences

Chapter 40: Broken Friendships

(Keifer's POV)

The underground room smelled like metal and cold concrete.

Not the kind of place meant for long conversations.

Not the kind of place meant for memories.

But memories were exactly what filled the room the moment Yuri spoke.

Yuri:

"Technically I tried to kill you."

His voice carried that same careless tone I remembered from years ago.

The same sarcasm.

The same arrogance.

But something underneath it had changed.

Fear.

I stepped closer to the table.

Slowly.

Measured.

Jay stayed slightly behind me, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed.

Calm.

Watching.

Always watching.

Keifer:

"You staged the accident."

Yuri shrugged slightly, the chains clinking softly against the table.

Yuri:

"Business."

The word echoed in the room like an insult.

My fists tightened.

Keifer:

"We were friends."

Yuri laughed.

A bitter laugh.

Yuri:

"Were we?"

The room felt colder suddenly.

Yuri leaned forward slightly.

Yuri:

"You had everything."

Keifer:

"What are you talking about?"

Yuri:

"Money. Power. The Watson name."

His eyes flickered toward Jay.

Yuri:

"And apparently the girl too."

Jay didn't react.

She just stared at him like he was a puzzle she had already solved.

Keifer:

"You tried to kill her."

Yuri:

"She wasn't supposed to be there."

Jay raised an eyebrow.

Jay:

"That's comforting."

Yuri ignored her.

His eyes stayed locked on me.

Yuri:

"You know what the funny part is?"

Keifer:

"I doubt it's funny."

Yuri smirked faintly.

Yuri:

"I hesitated."

My stomach twisted slightly.

Keifer:

"What?"

Yuri leaned back in the chair again.

Yuri:

"When I planned the hit."

He shrugged.

Yuri:

"I thought about calling it off."

Jay tilted her head slightly.

Jay:

"But you didn't."

Yuri's eyes hardened.

Yuri:

"No."

The silence that followed was heavy.

Not angry.

Just… sad.

Because this wasn't just an enemy.

This was someone who used to know every stupid joke we told in school.

Someone who used to sit at the same lunch table.

Someone who used to laugh with us.

And now he had tried to kill us.

Keifer:

"Why?"

The question came out quieter than I expected.

Yuri didn't answer immediately.

He just looked at the table for a moment.

Then he laughed again.

Yuri:

"You really want the truth?"

Jay pushed herself off the wall.

Jay:

"Yes."

Yuri's eyes flicked toward her again.

Yuri:

"You're the reason."

Jay blinked once.

Jay:

"Excuse me?"

Yuri looked back at me.

Yuri:

"Freya."

He held up one finger.

Yuri:

"Ella."

Another finger.

Yuri:

"And now Jay."

He smiled bitterly.

Yuri:

"You ever notice a pattern, Keifer?"

The tension in the room tightened.

Yuri continued quietly.

Yuri:

"You always get the girl."

Jay folded her arms.

Jay:

"That's not a good reason to try murdering someone."

Yuri shrugged again.

Yuri:

"It wasn't just that."

He leaned forward slightly.

Yuri:

"You inherited everything."

His voice grew sharper.

Yuri:

"The mansion."

"The money."

"The empire."

He laughed again.

But this time it sounded hollow.

Yuri:

"And what did I get?"

Keifer:

"A choice."

Yuri shook his head slowly.

Yuri:

"No."

His eyes burned with quiet resentment.

Yuri:

"I got to watch you win."

Jay stepped forward slightly.

Her voice calm.

Almost gentle.

Jay:

"You could've walked away."

Yuri looked at her.

Really looked.

Yuri:

"Funny thing about jealousy."

He leaned back again.

Yuri:

"It doesn't let you walk away."

The room fell silent again.

Jay studied him carefully.

Then she spoke quietly.

Jay:

"You wrote the hit list."

Yuri froze.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Jay continued.

Jay:

"The one we found in Sir Alvin's house."

Yuri's eyes narrowed slightly.

Yuri:

"So you did find that."

Jay nodded slowly.

Jay:

"Keifer wasn't the only name."

Yuri didn't deny it.

Keifer:

"You were planning to eliminate half the city."

Yuri smiled faintly.

Yuri:

"Ambitious, right?"

Jay's voice hardened slightly.

Jay:

"You involved innocent people."

Yuri shrugged.

Yuri:

"Collateral damage."

My patience snapped.

I slammed my hands onto the table.

The metal rattled loudly.

Keifer:

"You almost killed her!"

The echo of my voice bounced off the concrete walls.

Yuri didn't flinch.

He just looked at me quietly.

Yuri:

"And yet she's still alive."

His eyes flickered toward Jay again.

Yuri:

"She's stronger than she looks."

Jay didn't react.

But I saw the subtle shift in her posture.

The calm before the storm.

Jay stepped closer to the table.

Her voice soft.

Controlled.

Jay:

"You know what your real mistake was?"

Yuri raised an eyebrow.

Yuri:

"Getting caught?"

Jay shook her head.

Jay:

"No."

She leaned forward slightly.

Her eyes locked with his.

Jay:

"You underestimated me."

Yuri stared at her for a long moment.

Then he laughed quietly.

Yuri:

"Oh no."

He shook his head.

Yuri:

"I knew exactly what you were."

Jay's expression didn't change.

But I felt the tension in the air shift slightly.

Yuri continued calmly.

Yuri:

"You think I didn't notice?"

His eyes sharpened.

Yuri:

"You disappearing sometimes."

"You making phone calls in private."

"You knowing things before anyone else did."

My chest tightened slightly.

Yuri looked at me again.

Yuri:

"You really didn't know?"

I didn't answer.

Because suddenly something about his words felt dangerous.

Like he was stepping close to a truth he shouldn't know.

Jay spoke before I could.

Her voice cool.

Controlled.

Jay:

"You're guessing."

Yuri smirked.

Yuri:

"Am I?"

The silence that followed was thick.

Then Jay straightened slowly.

Jay:

"You've said enough for tonight."

She turned toward the door.

Conversation over.

Just like that.

Yuri called after her.

Yuri:

"You're not going to ask who else wants him dead?"

Jay stopped.

Slowly she turned back.

Jay:

"You're going to tell us anyway."

Yuri smiled.

Yuri:

"Maybe."

His eyes gleamed slightly.

Yuri:

"But not tonight."

Jay stared at him for another second.

Then she walked out.

I followed her into the hallway.

The heavy door slammed shut behind us.

For a moment neither of us spoke.

Then I exhaled slowly.

Keifer:

"He's hiding something."

Jay nodded.

Jay:

"I know."

Keifer:

"And he knows more than he should."

Jay's eyes darkened slightly.

Jay:

"Yes."

The elevator doors opened in front of us.

But before we stepped inside—

Jay whispered something quietly.

Something that made the entire situation feel even bigger than it already was.

Jay:

"This war isn't over yet."

The elevator ride back upstairs felt longer than usual.

Not because the distance had changed.

But because the air between Keifer and me had.

Heavy.

Thoughtful.

Dangerous.

Keifer leaned against the wall of the elevator, his arms crossed.

His eyes were fixed on the metal floor.

Thinking.

Calculating.

That was the thing about Keifer Watson.

He never stopped thinking.

Keifer:

"He knows something."

Jay:

"I know."

Keifer:

"And he hinted at it deliberately."

Jay:

"Yes."

The elevator hummed quietly as it rose through the mansion.

The low mechanical sound felt strangely loud in the silence.

Keifer finally looked at me.

Keifer:

"What's your plan?"

I didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was simple.

Yuri didn't deserve a quick ending.

He didn't deserve mercy either.

But revenge wasn't just about pain.

It was about consequences.

Jay:

"He doesn't leave that cell."

Keifer raised an eyebrow.

Keifer:

"That's it?"

Jay:

"No."

The elevator doors opened with a soft ding.

We stepped into the quiet hallway.

The mansion lights were dim now.

Most people had gone to sleep.

But the war we were fighting didn't sleep.

Jay:

"Isolation."

Keifer walked beside me as we moved toward the study.

Keifer:

"That breaks people."

Jay:

"Exactly."

Inside the study Savannah and Sophia were still awake.

Savannah looked up from her laptop.

Savannah:

"How did it go?"

Jay:

"He talked."

Sophia closed her tablet.

Sophia:

"Anything useful?"

Keifer answered this time.

Keifer:

"He hinted that more people are involved."

Savannah frowned.

Savannah:

"That's not surprising."

Amy burst into the room moments later like she had been waiting outside the entire time.

Amy:

"So?"

Jay:

"So."

Amy leaned forward eagerly.

Amy:

"Can I punch him now?"

Sophia sighed.

Sophia:

"Amy."

Amy:

"What?"

I sat down slowly in the chair near the desk.

My side still ached slightly, but I ignored it.

Jay:

"He doesn't get physical punishment."

Amy looked devastated.

Amy:

"WHAT."

Savannah smirked faintly.

Savannah:

"She has a plan."

Amy crossed her arms dramatically.

Amy:

"It better be good."

Jay:

"He wanted power."

Amy blinked.

Amy:

"Yeah?"

Jay:

"He wanted influence."

Savannah nodded slowly.

Savannah:

"That tracks."

I leaned back in the chair.

Jay:

"So we take that away."

The room went quiet as everyone listened.

Jay:

"He doesn't leave the underground floor."

Sophia tilted her head slightly.

Sophia:

"Permanent containment?"

Jay nodded.

Jay:

"Yes."

Amy frowned.

Amy:

"That's it?"

Jay:

"No."

I looked at Savannah.

Jay:

"You release the information."

Savannah's eyes lit up slightly.

Savannah:

"About the hit list."

Jay:

"Exactly."

Amy suddenly understood.

Amy:

"Oh."

Savannah grinned.

Savannah:

"That means every gang he betrayed will come after him."

Sophia nodded slowly.

Sophia:

"He becomes radioactive."

Keifer looked at me quietly.

Keifer:

"You're turning him into a warning."

Jay:

"Yes."

Amy finally smiled again.

Amy:

"That's actually evil."

Jay:

"Thank you."

Savannah started typing quickly on her laptop.

Savannah:

"Give me twenty minutes."

Sophia stood up.

Sophia:

"I'll adjust the surveillance."

Amy cracked her knuckles.

Amy:

"And I'll guard the prisoner."

Keifer watched all of this silently.

Then he leaned closer to me.

Keifer:

"You're making sure he lives."

Jay:

"Yes."

Keifer:

"Why?"

I looked at the glowing screen showing Yuri's cell.

He sat alone at the metal table.

Waiting.

Probably wondering what would happen next.

Jay:

"Because living with consequences is worse than dying."

Keifer studied my face for a moment.

Then he smiled faintly.

Keifer:

"You're terrifying."

Jay:

"I've been told."

Two hours later Savannah finished the job.

Messages spread across the underground networks of the city.

Encrypted channels.

Private gang lines.

Black market forums.

All carrying the same information.

Yuri had betrayed multiple groups.

Yuri had written a hit list.

Yuri had planned to eliminate his own allies.

Within minutes the reactions started.

Threats.

Anger.

Rage.

Savannah leaned back in her chair.

Savannah:

"That should ruin his reputation."

Amy grinned.

Amy:

"Oh he's never leaving that cell alive."

Sophia added calmly.

Sophia:

"He'll spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder."

Keifer looked at the monitor showing Yuri again.

Yuri didn't know yet.

But he would soon.

Jay:

"Bring him upstairs tomorrow."

Amy's eyes widened.

Amy:

"Oh this is gonna be fun."

Sophia sighed.

Sophia:

"Define fun."

The next evening the underground room was full again.

Iron Vipers on one side.

Obsidian Circle on the other.

Yuri was brought in chained to the chair again.

He looked around the room cautiously.

His confidence was gone now.

Jay:

"You're probably wondering why you're still alive."

Yuri stared at me.

Yuri:

"I assumed you wanted information."

Jay:

"No."

Savannah turned the monitor toward him.

The screen displayed hundreds of messages.

Threats.

Contracts.

Bounties.

Yuri's expression changed slowly as he read.

Confusion.

Then realization.

Then fear.

Yuri looked up at me.

Yuri:

"You exposed me."

Jay:

"Yes."

Yuri:

"You turned everyone against me."

Jay:

"Yes."

His voice shook slightly now.

Yuri:

"You can't keep me here forever."

Jay:

"No."

I stepped closer.

Jay:

"But you're not leaving either."

Yuri's eyes widened.

Yuri:

"What does that mean?"

Jay:

"It means you're going to live."

The room fell silent.

Jay:

"You're going to wake up every day knowing everyone wants you dead."

Yuri's breathing became uneven.

Jay:

"You're going to sit in that cell and remember exactly why."

Amy leaned against the wall smiling.

Amy:

"That's cold."

Yuri glared at me.

Yuri:

"You think this makes you better than me?"

Jay:

"No."

I leaned slightly closer.

Jay:

"It makes me smarter."

Yuri looked at Keifer then.

Like he was hoping for something.

Sympathy.

Mercy.

Anything.

Keifer stepped forward slowly.

Keifer:

"You made your choice."

Yuri's shoulders dropped.

Because he finally understood.

There would be no rescue.

No forgiveness.

No escape.

Just consequences.

And as the guards dragged him back toward the underground cell…

The war that Yuri started had finally come to an end.

But something deep inside me whispered a different truth.

This wasn't the end of the war.

Not even close.

Because somewhere out there…

The people Yuri mentioned were still watching.

Still waiting.

And the next storm was already coming.
