Chapter 47 - The Cost of Victory

Pain was a hammer, rhythmically beating against my skull.

I woke up in the infirmary, the smell of antiseptic and the hum of the medical nanites thick in the air. My arm was in a hard cast, my chest wrapped tight.

"You're awake," Dr. Okoye said. She looked like she hadn't slept in a week. Dark circles ringed her eyes. "You have three cracked ribs, a compound fracture of the radius, and a concussion that should have killed you."

"The barrier?" I rasped.

"Holding," she said, injecting something into my IV. "Lily held it together long enough for Ryan to finish the job. She passed out. She's been asleep for fourteen hours."

I tried to sit up. "Casualties?"

"Four dead," she said softly. "Two from the initial shockwave when the barrier cracked. Two from shrapnel when the Titan fell. We lost Sentinel Towers Three and Four. Complete burnout."

Four dead. Four people who trusted me.

"Who?"

"The Jensens," she said, naming a young couple who had worked in the kitchens. "And... Ben."

Ben. The quiet worker who had helped me in the tunnels.

I closed my eyes. The weight of it settled on my chest, heavier than the broken ribs.

"Ryan?"

"Powers grew," she said. "Significantly. He's... he's okay physically. But he's scared of what he did. He burned that thing to slag, Evelyn. There was nothing left but molten iron."

"Good," I said, my voice hard. "He needs to know he can kill."

I fell back against the pillow. The System pulsed, a cold, detached observer.

"Get me Alex," I said.

Alex walked in a minute later. He looked as bad as I felt. He had a bandage around his head and dried blood on his shirt.

"The Lord retreated," he said without preamble. "But he left a gift."

He handed me a piece of paper. It was damp with Mist residue. Scrawled on it in a handwriting that looked like it was written by a trembling child were coordinates.

"He wants to meet," Alex said. "Tomorrow. Neutral ground."

"It's a trap," I said.

"Probably," Alex agreed. "But he could have wiped us out today if he wanted to finish the job. He didn't. He's testing us. He's... playing."

"Then we play back," I said, gripping the bed rail. "I'm going."

"Evie, you can barely stand."

"I don't need to stand," I said. "I need to be the Queen."
