Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: Spider-Man Takes Action

The Bronx was a place with severe police understaffing. This area was mostly inhabited by people living at the bottom of New York society.

The government also adopted an indifferent attitude toward this place and did not invest much money in it. So after the Lizard Man attacked the district government office building, very few police arrived at the scene.

Only less than ten police cars and more than thirty officers reached the location, ready to stop the terrifying Lizard Man. Most of the officers who came were equipped only with Colt M1911 service pistols.

The maximum kinetic energy damage of this pistol was only 850 joules. There were also a few 12-gauge shotguns. These guns looked very powerful in movies and seemed satisfying to shoot at people.

But in reality, the greater function of shotguns was to block the enemy's advance with a large-area attack. Their true strength was stopping power, not lethality.

In fact, a shotgun using standard 12-gauge buckshot could only cause less than 300 joules of damage per projectile.

Shotguns looked cool to fire, but if they did not hit vital points at close range, it was actually very difficult to kill someone.

There had been cases where a criminal was hit by three shotgun blasts, with 27 pellets striking his body, and he still held a pistol and exchanged fire with the police.

These officers formed a simple defensive line with their police cars and then opened fire on the destructive Lizard Man.

To be honest, this level of firepower was too weak.

The range of pistols was very limited, and many had almost no lethality beyond fifty meters. Not to mention shotguns, which had even shorter ranges.

The bullets sprayed by these guns were just tickling the Lizard Man as he destroyed everything, but the shooting was enough to provoke his anger.

Don't expect a being whose mind was occupied by bestiality to have much reason. It did not care now whether it was killing innocent people or not. Bloodlust was the primal instinct of every predator.

The Lizard Man, completely controlled by bestiality, did not care about anything else. He just wanted to tear these little bugs to shreds.

Although this guy was very large, his speed was extremely fast. Lizards were the short-distance champions among land species of the same size.

Have you ever felt a four-meter-tall creature, moving like a speeding car, crashing into you?

Let alone dodging, even standing there would leave a person almost scared stiff.

These police officers tried to fire to stop his advance. Everyone almost fired their pistols at the speed of assault rifles, but it had no effect whatsoever.

These bullets were just tickling him.

The other officers were already desperate.

Many shouted for the officer behind the car to flee quickly, but perhaps due to extreme tension and fear, the officer's legs were stiff like two pieces of wood and he could not move at all.

Some people desperately closed their eyes, not daring to watch what would happen next.

This would be a terrible death. It definitely would!

Just at this critical moment, a voice rang out.

"Hey! Big Lizard, look here!"

The Lizard Man was successfully attracted by the newcomer. A pair of feet grew larger and larger in his eyes.

With a heavy thud, the Lizard Man was kicked head over heels by the newcomer. He fell to the ground, shaking the surrounding cars.

The one who arrived to help at this critical moment was Spider-Man Peter Parker.

The Spider-Man, enhanced by the spider gene, could almost kill an ordinary person with a full-powered punch. Not to mention that he had swung over on his webs, carrying a large amount of kinetic energy.

Such a kick carried several tons of impact and was aimed at the Lizard Man's head, which made it very uncomfortable.

Spider-Man also used a perfect backflip to dissipate the reaction force and landed steadily on the ground.

Taking advantage of this gap, two police officers ran up and carried away the officer who was too nervous to move. Now everyone's eyes were fixed on Peter.

"Hey, guys, I'm here to help. Don't look at me like that. You know our enemy is still over there," Peter said.

He motioned for the police not to focus their attention on him, as the big Lizard Man still had fighting power.

"Watch out!" an officer warned.

As soon as the warning came, before Spider-Man could respond, the next moment he was swept away by a tail. He crashed onto the roof of a car. The sudden heavy blow directly stunned him.

Although Spider-Man had spider-sense, having the sense did not mean he could react quickly enough—at least not the novice Spider-Man he was now.

"Little bug, you're looking for death!" Joseph shook his head, climbed up from the ground, and roared.

In the original story, Peter Parker at this time had only recently gained his spider abilities.

His combat experience was limited to dealing with street thugs. He had not undergone proper actual combat nor systematically learned fighting techniques.

Fortunately, his opponent at the time had been Dr. Connors. Although Dr. Connors had turned into a Lizard Man, as a scholar he had almost never fought in his life.

He was also a combat rookie. Both of their combat levels were equally amateur. They fought purely on animal instinct, and the combat scenes were quite ugly.

Unfortunately, the one who had turned into a Lizard Man now was a soldier who had served for six years.

His combat experience was simply incomparable to Spider-Man's. Although Joseph's rationality was very weak now, his combat skills had almost become instinct.

A tail like a steel whip came at Peter with a huge whooshing sound.

At this moment, Peter had just recovered from the sudden sneak attack. His back was still burning. Seeing the tail coming at him again, his strong spider-sense told him it was very dangerous.

As the talkative Spider-Man, he quickly dodged. He did not even have time to use his favorite quips.

"This little bug is too weak to deal with him. And this Lizard Man is using military fighting methods. Could it be something the military cooked up again?" Natasha drove a car and sat in the driver's seat, observing the fight between Spider-Man and the Lizard Man.

Ren did not speak. Of course he knew how this Lizard Man had come to be, but why it was a military person, Ren did not know. Perhaps it was the butterfly effect caused by his little butterfly.

"If he can't resist, then it's your turn," Ren said indifferently.

"Hmm," Natasha nodded.

To be honest, she did not want to step into the limelight so quickly. If someone discovered a bug-level creature like Ren, Natasha could not guarantee who the ultimate owner would be.
