Chapter 33 - The Exchange

The freight exchange sat like a rusted giant along the river.

Steel containers stacked high. Floodlights flickering over empty loading bays. The air smelled like diesel and cold water.

Keene parked two blocks out, killing the engine.

"No sirens," he said quietly. "We go in quiet, we go out cleaner."

Naomi stepped out beside him, the cold biting sharper here than anywhere else in the city. Echo and Calder followed close behind, all four moving toward the shadowed edge of the yard.

"You sure the server's here?" Naomi asked.

Echo nodded once. "Hollow hid it inside the logistics system. Everyone thinks it's just freight tracking."

Calder scanned the perimeter. "Vale's people?" he asked.

Echo's eyes narrowed toward the far end of the yard.

"They're already watching," she said.

Across the lot, a pair of headlights blinked once… then went dark.

Vale leaned against a container, coat pulled tight, watching through binoculars.

"They came faster than expected," one of his men muttered.

Vale smiled faintly.

"Good," he said. "Let's see if Echo still knows which doors Hollow left open."

Naomi slipped through a half-open gate, boots crunching softly against gravel.

Inside the main warehouse, the hum of machinery echoed low — not loud enough to be obvious, but steady.

Echo led them toward a small office tucked behind stacks of crates.

"This is the front," she whispered. "The real system's under the floor."

Naomi froze slightly at the word.

Floor.

For a second, she heard the rowhouse groan again in her memory.

Keene noticed the hesitation.

"You good?" he asked quietly.

She nodded once. "Yeah. Let's finish this."

Echo knelt beside a steel panel near the office wall, pulling a small tool from her coat.

Three quick twists.

The panel lifted, revealing a narrow ladder descending into a dim glow below.

"The hub," she said.

Keene motioned for Naomi to stay close as they climbed down one by one.

The underground room felt colder than the docks.

Rows of servers blinked softly, blue lights reflecting off metal racks.

Naomi stared in silence.

"This is it?" she whispered.

Echo nodded.

"Hollow's brain," she said.

Keene pulled out the flash drive from earlier. "You said this wipes the core?"

Echo hesitated.

"It should," she said.

Naomi caught the pause.

"Should?" she asked.

Echo's voice lowered.

"Hollow built layers," she admitted. "If Vale triggered a contingency, this might not be enough."

Above them, footsteps echoed across the warehouse floor.

Calder's voice crackled through Keene's radio.

"They're moving in," he whispered. "Vale's people just sealed the outer gate."

Keene's jaw tightened.

"We don't have long," he said.

Echo stepped toward the main console, hands moving fast across the keyboard.

The screens flickered — maps appearing, names shifting, routes dissolving in real time.

Naomi watched the data scroll by.

For a moment, she felt like she was inside Hollow's mind.

Then a red warning blinked across the screen:

CONTINGENCY ACTIVE.

Echo's breath caught.

"He knew," she whispered. "Vale's already inside the system."

Back upstairs, Vale walked slowly through the warehouse, boots echoing against metal.

"She always loved her little backdoors," he muttered, glancing toward the hidden panel.

He tapped his earpiece.

"Lock them in," he said calmly.

Below, the lights flickered violently.

The servers hummed louder — almost angry.

Keene looked at Naomi.

"Tell me this doesn't explode," he said.

Naomi forced a faint smile.

"With Hollow?" she replied. "Nothing stays quiet."

Echo's hands moved faster.

"I can burn the core," she said. "But someone has to authorize it through the system."

Naomi frowned. "Why me?"

Echo met her eyes.

"Because Hollow marked you as the variable," she said. "Your access rewrites the chain."

Naomi hesitated — the weight of the choice settling deep.

Above them, metal slammed shut.

The trap was closing.

She stepped toward the console.

"Then let's finish what he started," she said.

Her fingers hovered over the authorization prompt.

Snow fell heavier outside, covering the freight yard as Vale waited patiently above — confident that whatever happened next would change the board forever.
