Chapter 48 - 48: The Three Markers

I had not told him. I would not tell him. It was not the kind of information that helped anyone.

I sat down on the hall floor against the east wall, which is not something you saw many students do in the post-clearance period — most stood in their groups, comparing results, running post-combat assessment — but which my legs had been quietly requesting for the past twenty minutes and which I finally allowed.

Maris sat down beside me.

"Final count," I said.

"One thirty-nine," she said. "All present. Injuries within the expected range for a standard trial. Nothing critical."

"The ISS team."

"They extracted through the service access at twelve-fifteen. The northeast monitoring log will have the entity's activity record." She paused. "They didn't intervene."

"No."

"The thirty-second window handled itself."

"Yes."

She was quiet for a moment. Then: "The Gale Sovereignty."
