Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Amatarsu Awakens

Chapter 2: Amaterasu Awakens, Kuroba Takes Over

The scoreboard glared at them.

Shirato Girls 25 - Karasuno Girls 18

The final point had barely landed before Mao Aihara lowered her head.

Her shoulders trembled.

She could still feel the impact of the ball against her hand.

The spike had been blocked.

Again.

Another opportunity gone.

Another point lost.

She stared at the floor.

I should have gotten that.

Her breathing became uneven.

She had missed too many balls.

Failed too many attacks.

Made too many mistakes.

And every mistake felt heavier because she was supposed to be the ace.

Yui Michimiya noticed immediately.

"Mao..."

Mao didn't answer.

Yui stepped closer.

"It's okay. We still have another set."

Mao shook her head.

"No."

"Mao?"

"I can't."

Her voice cracked.

"I can't do this."

Yui's expression changed.

Mao clenched her fists.

"I keep trying to score, but they keep stopping me. I keep trying to receive, but I'm late. I keep trying to help everyone, but..."

Her voice became quieter.

"...I'm just making things worse."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"I'm the ace."

She looked toward the scoreboard.

"How am I supposed to be the ace if I can't even win a point when we need one?"

Yui opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Another teammate glanced toward Mao.

"She's... really shaken."

Someone else whispered:

"We've never seen her like this."

Mao heard them.

Her chest tightened.

"I'm sorry."

She lowered her head.

"I'm sorry, everyone."

Then something inside her answered.

Not loudly.

Not violently.

Just a quiet voice beneath the panic.

Enough.

Mao froze.

Her eyes widened.

Look up.

She slowly raised her head.

"Mao?"

Yui's voice sounded distant.

Mao stared across the court.

The net.

The floor.

The players.

The scoreboard.

Everything suddenly seemed unnaturally clear.

Lines began forming in her mind.

The positions of every player.

The distance between them.

The angles of their bodies.

The empty spaces.

The possible trajectories.

Her breathing stopped.

"What..."

A second voice whispered inside her.

There you are.

Mao's eyes widened.

"Who are you?"

The answer came calmly.

Kuroba Jeido.

Mao's heart began pounding.

She remembered the name.

Not from the court.

Not from anyone standing beside her.

From somewhere deeper.

Somewhere that shouldn't have existed.

"Kuroba..."

Yes.

Mao swallowed.

"Are you... me?"

Part of you.

The answer was immediate.

The part that sees the game.

Mao looked toward the opposing side.

Her vision changed again.

The Shirato blockers were no longer simply blockers.

Their feet created lines.

Their shoulders created angles.

Their hands created openings.

Their positioning created routes.

Her mind processed all of it automatically.

They're not unbeatable.

Mao's eyes trembled.

"I couldn't see this before."

You were too afraid to look.

Mao clenched her fists.

"I'm scared."

I know.

"I'm exhausted."

I know.

"I don't want to lose."

For the first time, Kuroba's voice became slightly warmer.

Neither do I.

Mao closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"What do I do?"

Let me help.

Mao hesitated.

"Help how?"

You have the body.

I have the vision.

You have the experience.

I have the calculation.

You know how to play.

I know how to make every movement count.

Mao's breathing slowly steadied.

"And if I can't?"

Then I'll take over.

Mao's eyes opened.

"What?"

Not forever.

Kuroba's voice remained calm.

Just enough to show you.

Mao looked down at her hands.

Her fingers trembled.

"I don't want to disappear."

You won't.

"I don't want to lose myself."

You won't.

The voice softened.

I'm not here to erase Mao Aihara.

I'm here because Mao Aihara isn't supposed to carry this alone.

Mao stared at the court.

Yui was still standing nearby.

"Mao?"

Mao looked at her captain.

Yui's expression was worried.

"I'm here."

Mao almost laughed through her tears.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize."

Yui stepped closer.

"We lost a set. That's all."

Mao looked toward the scoreboard.

25 - 18.

A single set.

Nothing more.

But it had felt like the entire world.

Kuroba whispered.

Give me control.

Mao hesitated.

Then slowly nodded.

"...Okay."

The Takeover

The change was subtle at first.

Mao's breathing stopped shaking.

Her shoulders straightened.

Her hands relaxed.

Her eyes lifted.

Yui noticed.

"Mao?"

Mao looked at her.

"I'm okay now."

Something about her voice was different.

Not completely.

It was still Mao.

But the uncertainty was gone.

Yui frowned.

"Mao..."

Mao smiled.

A small smile.

Sharper than usual.

"Let's play."

The referee signaled for the second set.

Karasuno took their positions.

Mao moved to the front row.

Across the net, Shirato looked confident.

They had just taken the first set.

Their blockers were already talking.

"Keep pressuring Aihara."

"She's the ace. Don't let her get comfortable."

Mao heard them.

She smiled.

Inside her mind, Kuroba spoke.

Good.

Mao blinked.

"Good?"

They're going to target us.

"And?"

That means they're predictable.

The whistle blew.

Shirato served.

WHAP!

The ball came hard toward Mao.

She moved.

Her body reacted before she consciously thought about it.

Platform.

Angle.

Contact.

THUD!

Perfect.

The ball rose cleanly toward the center.

Rinko stared.

"That was..."

Yui immediately moved underneath it.

"Perfect receive."

Mao was already approaching.

The setter sent the ball high.

Two blockers jumped.

Mao saw them.

Left blocker.

Right blocker.

Hands.

Shoulders.

Weight distribution.

Everything aligned.

A line appeared.

A tiny opening.

Mao jumped.

Kuroba whispered.

There.

Mao swung.

BANG!

The ball slipped directly through the gap.

It hit the floor.

Point.

Karasuno.

1 - 0.

Silence.

Mao landed.

She looked across the net.

The Shirato blockers stared back.

Mao smiled.

Not arrogantly.

Not loudly.

Just enough.

I saw you.

The next rally began.

Shirato attacked.

Mao moved into position.

Receive.

Perfect.

The ball returned.

Shirato attacked again.

Mao read it.

Another touch.

Another save.

Another attack.

Another receive.

The rally stretched.

The Shirato players became increasingly frustrated.

"Why won't she go down?"

"She's always there!"

"No..."

One blocker stared at Mao.

"She's not just reacting."

Mao stood ready.

Her eyes tracked every movement.

"She's reading us."

Inside her mind, Kuroba smiled.

Exactly.

Amaterasu

The score continued climbing.

4 - 2.

7 - 4.

10 - 6.

Mao's presence became impossible to ignore.

She wasn't suddenly stronger.

She wasn't suddenly faster.

She wasn't jumping higher.

Something else had changed.

Her decisions were becoming precise.

Every step had a purpose.

Every movement followed a line.

Every contact had a destination.

Yui watched from beside her.

"Mao..."

Rinko glanced toward the ace.

"She's completely different."

Yui nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

Mao received another serve.

Perfect.

Rinko set.

Mao attacked.

The block formed.

She changed her swing at the last moment.

The ball curved around the outside hand.

Point.

The Shirato defender barely moved.

"What was that?"

Mao landed.

Inside her mind, Kuroba spoke.

They expected the obvious line.

Mao smiled.

"And we gave them another one."

Good.

The next rally began.

Shirato's setter raised the ball.

Mao's eyes narrowed.

She saw the hitter's approach.

The angle.

The shoulder.

The wrist.

The expected contact.

She moved before the spike was even struck.

THUD!

Another perfect receive.

Rinko stared.

"How did you know?"

Mao looked at her.

"I just saw it."

Rinko smiled.

"Then keep seeing it!"

Mao nodded.

"That's the plan."

Inside her mind, Kuroba laughed softly.

Now you understand.

Mao's heart was pounding.

But this time, it wasn't fear.

It was excitement.

For the first time, she wasn't fighting the court.

She was reading it.

She could see possibilities everywhere.

And Kuroba was there with her.

Not replacing her.

Not erasing her.

Awakening something that had been buried beneath doubt.

Yui looked toward Mao.

The captain couldn't explain what had happened.

But she could see the difference.

Mao wasn't playing like someone desperate to prove she was an ace anymore.

She was playing like someone who already knew she was one.

Across the net, Shirato's players felt it too.

One of them swallowed.

"She's smiling."

Another frowned.

"Why?"

The first girl looked at Mao.

"Because she knows something we don't."

Mao lowered herself into receiving position.

Her eyes locked onto the server.

Kuroba whispered.

Let them come.

Mao smiled.

"Yeah."

The whistle blew.

The serve launched across the net.

Mao moved.

THUD!

Perfect contact.

The ball rose.

The rally had begun.

And inside Mao Aihara, Amaterasu had awakened.

Kuroba had taken control.

But Mao was still there.

Watching.

Learning.

Feeling every movement.

And for the first time, the two halves of her mind weren't fighting over control.

They were playing volleyball together.
