Chapter 8 - Chapter Eight

"You're saying she would come back here? No. That can't be possible. She wouldn't be foolish enough to return to the bank after what happened. I'm sure she's hiding somewhere, trying to stay ahead of the police," Connard argued.

"Let's not waste time arguing."

Josh turned toward him, his expression serious.

"We need to get to the bank immediately."

Without further hesitation, they drove back to Ozone Bank with the police officers following closely behind.

The moment the janitor spotted them from a distance, panic flashed across her face. She quickly ducked out of sight, desperately searching for a way to escape.

"Have you seen the janitor recently?" Josh repeatedly asked the bank staff.

Unfortunately, no one seemed to know where she was.

But the janitor's clever game of hide-and-seek eventually came to an end when one of the officers spotted her attempting to escape through the back door.

There was nowhere left to run.

It was too late to keep hiding.

Slowly, she stepped outside with both hands raised above her head.

Her head hung low, unable to meet Josh's eyes.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she struggled to find the right words.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I just had to do it."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

And suddenly, everyone was left wondering what could possibly have driven her to steal a one-million-dollar check.

"Fuck your apology. Where's the goddamn check?" Josh snapped, completely dismissing her tears. At that moment, the only thing that mattered to him was recovering the check.

"Here it is."

She reached into her purse and pulled out the check, handing it over.

Connard immediately stepped forward.

"Are you alone in this? Where's your accomplice? How did you know Josh wasn't in the office? You waited until you were sure he was gone before coming back here to cash the check, didn't you?" he demanded.

"I'm alone. Nobody planned this with me," she admitted quietly.

Josh snatched the check from her hand and turned to the police officers.

"Take her with you. This is a criminal offense, and she needs to face the consequences. A few years behind bars should teach her a lesson. Call whoever you need to call. And, oh, don't forget to get yourself a good lawyer, too, because we're taking this to court."

Despite recovering the check, Josh was determined to see her punished for the ordeal she had put him through. He knew he still had plenty of questions to answer when he returned to Alvin Alejandro.

At the police station, Megan was taken into custody after being allowed to make a few phone calls. Meanwhile, Josh began the necessary legal proceedings against her, determined to ensure that she faced the full consequences of her actions.

As Josh spoke with the officers, a familiar face suddenly walked into the station.

It was Jenny, the secretary from Royal Gold Mine.

Josh was surprised to see her.

"Hey, there. What are you doing here? You're supposed to be at work."

Jenny smiled innocently.

"I should be asking you that question. Anyway, I came to see my mom. She just called me and told me she had been arrested."

"Oh, I see."

Josh glanced toward the holding area.

"Can we go see her?" he asked.

"Yeah, sure," Jenny responded.

They walked toward the holding area where Megan had been detained. But the moment they arrived, Josh was hit with a shocking realization.

He stopped in his tracks.

His eyes widened as he stared at the woman sitting behind the bars.

"Is this your mom?" Josh asked, pointing at Megan.

"Yes. Why? Do you have a problem with that?" Jenny asked, bewilderment spreading across her face.

Josh ran a hand over his head, visibly shaken.

"This is unbelievable. I can't believe this is happening. What am I going to do now?"
